Michael Kamen has become one of the most respected movie soundtrack producers and composers of the modern age. And he's never lost his connection with pop music, either: most recently, he conducted the orchestra for Metallica's S & M. Juilliard-bred, Kamen has orchestrated work for David Bowie and Kate Bush, among others, and his work with Eric Clapton on the movie score for 1987's Lethal Weapon merged his two worlds into one. The summer blockbuster X-Men is a perfect match for the man who brought both Terry Gilliam's classic, Brazil, and Die Hard to life. Here, the battle of Professor X (Patrick Stewart), who must protect mutants born with unusual powers--they can mindread and fly--against the holocaust threatening their freakish existence creates massive tension that Kamen's score elaborately fulfills. Using the L.A. All-star Orchestra at full throttle, Kamen is at his Wagnerian best for "Museum Fight" and "The Final Showdown," and is noticeably more gentle with the epilogue, "Logan and Rogue." Kamen knows how to action-pack a score for maximum effect. --Rob O'Connor

While Hollywood franchises often stick to one composer as a way to establish continuity, the three X-Men movies have gone to three different musicians. And yet, the sound has remained remarkably homogenous; in other words, if you enjoyed Michael Kamen and John Ottway's scores for the first and second installments, respectively, you'll get a kick out of what John Powell has come up with for the third. Though he adopted a more contemporary, electronic-inflected sound on actioners The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy, here Powell goes for the full symphonic treatment. What's most interesting is his use of a 45-member chorus, which is surprisingly varied. On "Jean and Logan," the choir delicately hovers above the strings, almost out of reach, but on "Rejection Is Never Easy," it weaves in and out in a rather spooky manner, and it unleashes at full blast on the CD's climax, "Phoenix Rises," a six-minute-plus opus that at times sounds like a weird cross between sacred music and Philip Glass. This is one of the best big-budget scores of the year. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Deep Concentration reinforces what you fundamentally love about hip-hop and then proceeds to flip your brain into hyperspace with some of the more progressive DJ compositions from some of the most respected turntablists around. West Coast DJ Cut Chemist (of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli) reaches extra deep into the archives to build "Lesson 6," while DJs Swingsett and Wally find a hook in a loop of dripping water for the trippy "Centaurius Space Bass." Hip-hop purists will appreciate the X-Ecutioners' assault "A Turntable Experience" and the only MC cut, "Say What," by the lyrical marvels Latyrx. Some of the routines on Deep Concentration are sonically experimental while others, such as Prince Paul's ego trip, "DJ Prince Paul vs. the World," simply excel with excess. --Todd Levin

Six episodes from the X-Men animated TV series, an attempt to bring the popular Marvel comic book series about the next link in human evolution, people endowed with special powers due to their mutant nature, to Saturday morning television. The TV series ran for five seasons, from 1992-1997, more or less faithfully translating the comic books to video. This offering contains the two-part Savage Land, Savage Heart and the four-part Dark Phoenix Saga, all from the third season. Savage Land, Savage Heart has Sauron, a part human/part pterodactyl who feeds on the energy of others, kidnapping Storm under the orders of the stone god Garokk, who plans on using Storm's powers for his own ends. The Dark Phoenix Saga continues The Phoenix Saga in which Jean Grey was taken over by the mysterious Phoenix force. Now the Phoenix has gained the upper hand, with the help of Jason Wyngarde and The Inner Circle mutants. Will the X-Men be able to remove the destructive Phoenix from Jean's body, or will Jean have to die in order to defeat the Phoenix? Too bad the animation is so cheap and choppy, but the plots make up for that with some pretty exciting, fast-paced action. This is certainly for more mature kids, featuring as it does fantastical battles between mutants and some oddly stilted and formal dialogue, such as, "We are certainly between Scylla and Charybdis, between the proverbial rock and a hard place!" Be advised. --Jim Gay

HyperScan is the combination of two pursuits big among today's kids: video games and collectable cards. The system takes the novel approach of actually incorporating the cards as assets in the video game through the use of IntelliCards, trading cards with tiny RFID chips buried inside that can send information to, and sometimes receive info from, the HyperScan console. In the included X-Men 2-D fighting game, players select their character by swiping one of the included character cards over the flashing red scanner built into the console's clamshell design, much the way a grocer would scan a can of beans. Should the player win the battle, their character is rewarded with increased experience, strength points, and other stats that are then transferred back onto the card with another scan. Players can get deeper into a game by using other cards to add attacks, level up other X-Men characters, and execute cool finishing moves. The system's graphics aren't much to write home about--think original PlayStation--but they're in line with the system's price when you consider that the first game is included. The cards feature full-color graphics of the characters or items they represent, along with beginning stats--updated stats are viewed only on the console. HyperScan makes a good system for avid card traders provided they have access to other HyperScan players. By itself, though, HyperScan is not much of a system. The console comes with one controller (but has ports for two), X-Men game, six X-Men cards, AC power pack, AV connection cables, and instructions. --Porter B. Hall

X-Men: The Last Stand is the third installment in the popular superhero franchise, and it's an exciting one with a splash of fresh new characters. When a scientist named Warren Worthington II announces a "cure" for mutant powers, it raises an interesting philosophical question: is mutant power a disease that needs a cure, or is it a benefit that homo superior enjoys over "normal" human beings? No surprise that Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants resist the idea that they need to be cured, and declare war on the human race. But it's a little tougher for the X-Men, led by Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Cyclops (James Marsden), and Storm (Halle Berry). If you're Rogue (Anna Paquin), for example, your power means you can't even touch your boyfriend, Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). To compound matters, someone previously thought dead has returned, and might be either friend or foe. With director Bryan Singer having moved on to Superman Returns, the franchise passes to the hands of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), whose best work is done in the big action sequences such as a showdown between mutant armies. But it's difficult to manage the sheer volume of characters when adding longtime comic-book stalwarts such as Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Angel (Ben Foster), and one character in particular deserved better than an off-screen dismissal. And fans of the original Dark Phoenix comic book story might be underwhelmed by the movie's resolution. X-Men: The Last Stand is presumably the last film in the series, but the ambiguous ending leaves possibilities open. Look for the two writers most responsible for making the X-Men who they were, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont, in early cameos. --David Horiuchi Beyond the Film The movies | X-Men Evolution: The Complete Third Season | More Superhero DVDs | X-Men comic books | The X-Men on Xbox | The soundtrack and more |
