It's simple: in his various realizations of the piano music of Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini set a standard that has yet to be bettered. This compilation, drawn from recordings made between 1966 and 1971, is consequently the best of the best. Ciccolini always played Satie's music as though it had been written by Claude Debussy, not by some cheap charlatan or uneducated primitive (which, to an extent that is still debatable, Satie was). The result is that these seemingly simple piano pieces acquire a tonal allure that is as surprising as it is undeniable. They possess an understated sophistication that points directly toward Ravel and Poulenc, at the same time providing an opening to the minimalist aesthetic of the later 20th century. Ciccolini's playing is pliant and graceful, and under his fingers the music seems to breathe and come alive. What more could a composer or a listener want? --Ted Libbey |

Opening unpromisingly with one of several mawkish numbers derived from Victor Herbert's musical Babes in Toyland, the antics of toyshop laborers Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee are worked into a scenario midway between Lewis Carroll and the Brothers Grimm. Nursery-rhyme characters come and go in a surreal fantasy, with the evil Mr. Barnaby threatening to evict Widow Peep from her shoe unless he receives her daughter Bo in marriage. The movie culminates in a full-scale invasion of Toyland by the yeti-ish Bogeymen and their defeat by the 100 six-foot wooden soldiers which Stan and Ollie have built by mistake. Henry Brandon gives a characterful performance, while 1930s child star Charlotte Henry is an appealing heroine. Directors Gus Meins and Charles R. Rogers milk the slapstick to an increasingly unnerving degree. Thomas and his train-yard pals wouldn't pout if Christmases on the Island of Sodor were a little less white. In each of the six story stops that make up Thomas' Christmas Wonderland, snow stalls or otherwise threatens to sabotage the perky cargo pullers' holiday plans. Everybody's stuck in Snow, a new story narrated by Alec Baldwin, so Rusty lifts his fellow locomotives' spirits by relating the tale of the year Skarloey was sidelined by an avalanche. In "Thomas & the Missing Christmas Tree," Thomas is enlisted to pick up the village tree when severe snowdrifts leave him stranded on a remote stretch of track. The title character in the "Terence the Tractor" segment teaches a teary-eyed Thomas a thing or two about how his "ugly" Caterpillar wheels come in handy when the uncharacteristically arrogant engine sets off without his snowplow. And in "Special Funnel," Peter Sam is relieved of the other engines' constant ribbing when he's rewarded with a deluxe-model funnel after a monster icicle snaps his formerly wobbly one off. Rounding out this festive feature is "The Snow Song," a musical chug through decked-out village station stops that celebrates the title character's pluck: the little blue train finds his way "Whistle blowing / Yes, it's snowing."
