Perfect for everyday use, the four red-wine glasses in this set are part of the moderately priced Ouverture series offered by world-renowned Austrian wineglass maker Riedel Crystal (founded in 1756). Being lead-free, they're not crystal like Riedel's premium glasses but are machine blown of potash glass and are dishwasher-safe. Their thin rims are cut and polished to Riedel's exacting standards, so wine flows easily onto the tongue. Each glass holds 12-3/8 ounces and stands 7-3/8 inches high. Though glasses shaped and sized for different types of wine seem commonplace today, when Riedel introduced this idea in 1961, it was revolutionary. Since then Riedel has continued fine-tuning glasses to bring out the best characteristics in wines and spirits. Varying bowls' shapes and sizes affects the position of the head when sipping and where wine first contacts the tongue's various taste zones. --Fred Brack |

The Wine Series offers the legendary wine-enhancing qualities of Riedel glassware in an affordable yet attractive package. Bowl shapes are modeled after Riedel's popular Vinum series, but because they're machine-made from high-quality non-leaded glass, they're ideal for the novice oenophile or for everyday use. As with the Vinum series, each type of glass is carefully formed to bring out the best in a specific varietal. Here, the shape of bowl and mouth are specifically designed to enhance the flavor, bouquet and texture of full-bodied reds like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Machine-made in Europe by master glassmakers, each glass stands 9-1/4 inches tall and holds 21-1/2 ounces at full capacity. --Mary Park |

After a four-year hiatus notable for some film and television soundtrack work, a lapsed contract, and a relaxed songwriting schedule Fountains of Wayne return with their third and best CD to date. The New York-based power-pop quartet delivers a diverse feast of infectious melodies and endlessly clever lyrics. Songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood still slide on a sweet scale between the Beatles and the Monkees, but they've branched out from '60s sounds to include bona fide alt rock ("Little Red Light," "Bought for a Song"), orchestrated pop ("Halley's Waitress"), a country lark worthy of Dwight Yoakam ("Hung Up On You"), and hints of psychedelia ("Supercollider"). The Cars-flavored "Bright Future in Sales" and "Stacy's Mom" warrant heavy-rotation airplay. Following their acclaimed eponymous debut and the vastly underrated Utopia Parkway, Welcome Interstate Managers leaves no doubt that Fountains of Wayne are gaining strength. --Jeff Shannon |

What is junior high school but a strange, disorienting pastiche of black comedy, tragedy, soap opera, and (most of all) horror movie? Well, that pretty much describes Todd Solondz's astonishingly honest and clear-sighted film, Welcome to the Dollhouse. Like Solondz's even more controversial follow-up--the acclaimed and despised Happiness (1998)--Dollhouse unflinchingly looks deep into its characters' souls (and their embarrassing desires, and their floundering sexuality) in ways that can be simultaneously disturbing and liberating, appalling and hilarious. Dawn Wiener (Heather Matarazzo) is a hapless seventh-grade geek whose cruel and contemptuous schoolmates have nicknamed her (what else?) "Wiener Dog." Everything about Dawn is so awkward--the way she looks, talks, moves--that it's no wonder other kids dump on her. They're most likely so insecure about themselves that they're terrified of the Wiener Dog they know lurks somewhere down inside themselves, too. So, the best social and psychological survival tactic is to distance themselves from Dawn by relentlessly reminding her of her "place" at the bottom of the junior-high pecking order. Solondz's vision is hardly sentimental, and you wouldn't even call it "compassionate," but it is a moral vision: authentic, undiluted, and, in the end, understanding. --Jim Emerson |

Take a pair of bickering brothers, a precocious child, an ex-wife, and a meddling mother and you've got Two and a Half Men. In the sitcom's sophomore year, which aired during the 2004-2005 television season, siblings Charlie (Charlie Sheen) and Alan (Jon Cryer) have their living situation somewhat under control. Alan is still as fussy as ever and Charlie is a overgrown child who views women as his preferred playthings. But they somehow manage to provide a surprisingly stable home for Alan's 11-year-old son Jake (Angus T. Jones), who in many ways is more mature than either his father or uncle. Living together in sunny southern California, the two and a half men in this 21st-century version of The Odd Couple create a lifestyle that works for their oddball family, whether it's sparring with family members, dealing with intrusive friends, or juggling the various women who traipse in and out of their lives. If you think too much about it, it's unsettling that a child is thrown into some of the sexcapades. Though played for laughs, it's a tad creepy watching Jake walk into some PG-13 situations--some of them including his dad. When he learns his ex-wife is dating, Alan tries to give Charlie a run for the money in the bachelor department. Cryer has always been a natural when it comes to comedy, but Sheen's best work always has been in drama. This season, he comes into his own in an easygoing role that suits him. The storylines offered aren't unique, but Cryer and Sheen exhibit warm chemistry that elevates this so-so series. This year's guest stars include Sean Penn and Elvis Costello, who appear as heightened versions of themselves. Denise Richards--who was married to Sheen at the time--also guest stars as one of Charlie's babes. (The couple's real-life daughter, Sam, also makes her acting debut here.) The four-disc box set includes all 24 episodes from the second season, as well as a gag reel (that's pretty funny) and a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of the sitcom's stars. --Jae-Ha Kim |

How many axes does that meaty tank need to take squarely in the chest to get a simple thank you? Weve all seen tanks hack away diligently while at the same time poisoned, on fire melting, and skewered by countless swords, all with a big smile on their face. Theyre there every day to take all that punishment that is being diverted from your squishy body. Cmon people, give a tank some love, throw them a /hug, just let them know you care. |

Little girls are sure to love creating a home for one of their favorite TV characters with this Dora the Explorer Magical Welcome House from Fisher-Price. Decorated in bright colors, this folding doll house features eight rooms, a working lamp, and fun sound effects. Super-cool "hot spots" let your child safely plug in additional electronic accessories. The Magical Welcome House is designed for children three and above, since small doll house accessories may pose a choking hazard.
Straight out of the box, it's easy to see that this bright orange, plastic doll house with its pink "tile" roof was inspired by the bold colors that make the animated Dora the Explorer so much fun to watch. Eight rooms in four sections ensure that there's lots of places for Dora and her guests to explore and decorate, and a unique, folding design lets you configure the house in several ways. When your child pushes down the chimney, an automatic release makes it seem like the house is magically unfolding to great her. This feature works best on smooth, even floors, and we found the plastic locks that hold the house open a little tricky to engage, so you may need to help your child with them. Before your child starts helping Dora get settled in this welcoming doll house, you'll need to use a Phillips head screwdriver to insert three AA batteries (not included) in the bottom of the house. This powers fun greetings and a working lamp. An Interactive Space to Share with Imaginative Friends There are three "hot spots" in the house, one each in the playroom, living room, and kitchen. These let your child safely plug in special "working" accessories, like the lamp that comes with the house. When the lamp is plugged in, simply press the bottom on its base and it will stay illuminated for a full 30 seconds. Other available accessories include a bilingual stand-up clock and a microwave that talks (not included.) Overall, our one complaint about this cool house is that it only comes with one sofa, one Dora doll, and one lamp. This means that additional accessories (sold separately) are necessary to fill the house and ensure maximum fun, especially if more than one child wants to play at a time. But this can be easily remedied. However, the accessories that are included are lots of fun. The Dora doll has soft, rooted hair that offers a tactile element to play time. Her arms and legs swing back and forth, so that she can be positioned sitting or standing in several ways. Although, we were slightly disappointed that she can't turn her head or bend her elbows and knees. Additionally, the locking hinges and the "spring open" action are great features, but we are concerned about their durability over time. Occasionally, the house sprung open when we wanted it closed, surprising and frustrating us. Since this colorful, interactive doll house is sure to become a favorite toy that will get a lot of use, and its plastic body seems sturdy enough to handle the activity, you might simply want to find a semi-permanent location for it. This will help preserve the action of the moving parts, and it will keep the doll house more easily accessible. What's in the Box |
