This is a stunning performance of some of the most formidably difficult music in the repertoire. Written by the foremost violinist of his, and perhaps any other time, these six sonatas contain every imaginable--and some unimaginable--technical, tonal, and musical challenge for the instrument and the player. Ysa˙e's acknowledged models were Bach and Paganini, his inspiration six friends and colleagues whose playing he especially admired and to each of whom a sonata is dedicated, tailored to his instrumental and interpretive gifts. The one written for Kreisler even incorporates a little pastiche of his composing style. Although Ysa˙e had stopped performing, he poured into these sonatas his peerless knowledge of the violin and its resources, along with his lifelong experience of it as an expressive tool, creating what is widely regarded by both players and listeners as a set of masterpieces. Clearly, only a virtuoso of the highest caliber as well as intrepid courage can do justice to these works. Thomas Zehetmair has established an international reputation for his consummate technique, stylistic versatility, fiery temperament, emotional intensity, and adventurous spirit. These qualities are on abundant display on this recording, making him an ideal interpreter for these highly charged, powerful, dramatic, mercurial works for which he seems to have a natural affinity. He tosses off the most hair-raising technical feats with effortless ease: double stops of all kinds, chords, runs at top speed all over the fingerboard, tricky bravura bowings, sound effects. He can make the violin sing, speak, sigh and laugh; his tone is gorgeous, vibrant, pure, variable, nuanced; even the pizzicati sound good. He captures every mood and character of the music: its sweet, dreamy graciousness, lyrical repose, joyful exuberance, driving energy, unbridled passion, inexorable obsessiveness. The rich-voiced Alaskan mezzo Viovica Genaux's new CD is as dazzling as her Arias for Farinelli disc that appeared a while ago. Here she sings music of Hasse and Handel, two German composers who wrote in what, for the sake of creating an umbrella, can be called perfect pre-Italian bel canto style. Genaux sings two selections from Handel's Orlando---one wild with coloratura and the other the eponymous hero's moody, difficult mad scene---one from Alcina, and a cantata dating from 1711 that features fine writing for recorders. The lesser-known Hasse is represented by three arias from his opera Arminio and a cantata. Genaux leaps every hurdle the composers put in her way---seemingly endless runs, two-octave leaps, trills. Indeed, one is reminded more than once of Marilyn Horne, although Genaux's voice is prettier and not as grand. She can spin a long, quiet line with grace and breath to spare as well. Genaux's sound, like that of all great singers, is unique--in her case, her tone has a milky smoothness that sets her apart. This CD is for all admirers of truly great singing, and the rarities in the program give it extra value. Bernard Labadie leads the French-Canadian group Les Violons du Roy in performances that are rhythmically razor-sharp and thoroughly alive. --Robert Levine |

 Mounted in high lavish style, from the opening strains to coda, The Red Violin pays homage to the careful uses of color and composition without bothering to support these qualities with any real substance. Oh, it's a class act on the surface all the way, while failing on nearly every other level to convince. The story tells the story, revealing precious little else. The 17th-century Cremonese instrument-maker Niccolo Bussotti finishes his final violin with a curious red varnish, the secret of which spans the film, yet will come as a surprise only to the very sleepy. The odd voyage of this unique violin through history is then explored from one episode to the next, from child prodigy to gypsies to Victorian virtuoso to a clandestine enclave of art lovers in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution. This is all framed by the violin's rediscovery in present day by instrument appraiser Charles Morritz (Samuel L. Jackson), for whom the perfect instrument strikes a resonant chord. The main scheme of the film, an object connecting a number of seemingly disparate stories, has been used many times, most notably in Max Ophuls's La Ronde. But while this approach is employed elsewhere to cause one scene to reverberate against another, The Red Violin is content to leave each episode thematically unconnected with any of the others. On the decorative level, the film may satisfy many viewers with its sensuous attention to tone and detail, as well as its eclectic and expertly performed score. But as narrative it is very slight. Just pierce the pretty crust of this puff pastry and gaze in wonder at the pocket of air within. --Jim Gay |
