The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Hardly an original plot, but perhaps that's fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankenstein's monster. The movie rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle--Nemo's submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals; flashy, dumb, and completely incoherent. Fans of the original comic book will be disappointed. Also featuring Peta Wilson, Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Richard Roxburgh, and Jason Flemyng. --Bret Fetzer |

The dramatic story of the real-life murder that inspired the birth of modern detective fiction. In June of 1860 three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit. The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection, ironically destroying, in the process, the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land.At the time, the detective was a relatively new invention; there were only eight detectives in all of England and rarely were they called out of London, but this crime was so shocking, as Kate Summerscale relates in her scintillating new book, that Scotland Yard sent its best man to investigate, Inspector Jonathan Whicher. Whicher quickly believed the unbelievable—that someone within the family was responsible for the murder of young Saville Kent. Without sufficient evidence or a confession, though, his case was circumstantial and he returned to London a broken man. Though he would be vindicated five years later, the real legacy of Jonathan Whicher lives on in fiction: the tough, quirky, knowing, and all-seeing detective that we know and love today…from the cryptic Sgt. Cuff in Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone to Dashiell Hammett’s Sam Spade. The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher is a provocative work of nonfiction that reads like a Victorian thriller, and in it Kate Summerscale has fashioned a brilliant, multilayered narrative that is as cleverly constructed as it is beautifully written. |

An enchanting companion album to A Victorian Christmas... Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans officially outlawed all festivals, including the ancient Yuletide celebrations so beloved by the people. In rediscovering the ancient feast of Christmas, the Victorians searched throughout Europe to find old carols, transporting them across borders and language barriers. Here is a collection of well-known melodies from Provence: Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella; Burgandy: Patapan; Germany: O, Tannenbaum; France: Wherefore This Great Joy (Angels We Have Heard on High)along with lesser-known gems from Poland, Alsace, Sicily, Finland, Holland, Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Galicia and the Basque country. |
Christmas had been a much neglected holiday until the Victorians revived its beloved traditions - trimming the tree, hanging the mistletoe, decking the hall...and celebrating it all in songs called carols. A Victorian Christmas offers a delightful assortment of the popular carols of the time, from those still well-known today, including The First Noel, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Greensleeves, The Holly and the Ivy and The Wassail Song; to a treasure trove of lesser known gems including The Cherry Tree Carol, The Carnal and the Crane and My Dancing Day. Featuring the lyrical hammered dulcimer (or, as the Victorians called it, the "piano harp") of Robin Petrie in sparkling arrangements which also include different combinations of piano, strings, harp and guitar. |
