Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. In fact, it consistently ranks among the top 10 movies ever made in the once-a-decade Sight & Sound international critics poll, placing at number 4 in the most recent survey. (Universal Pictures' spectacularly gorgeous 1996 restoration and rerelease of this 1958 Paramount production was a tremendous success with the public, too.) James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. The detective and the disturbed woman fall ("fall" is indeed the operative word) in love and...well, to give away any more of the story would be criminal. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson |

In the grand scheme of theological thrillers, Constantine aspires for the greatness of The Exorcist but ranks more closely with The Order. Based on the popular Hellblazer comic book series, and directed with nary a shred of intelligence by music video veteran Francis Lawrence, it's basically The Matrix with swarming demons instead of swarming machines. Keanu Reeves slightly modifies his Matrix persona as John Constantine, who roams the dark-spots of Los Angeles looking for good-evil, angel-devil half-breeds to ensure that "the balance" between God and Satan is properly maintained. An ancient artifact and the detective twin of a woman who committed evil-induced suicide (Rachel Weisz) factor into the plot, which is taken so seriously that you'll want to stand up and cheer when Tilda Swinton swoops down as the cross-dressing angel Gabriel and turns this silliness into the camp-fest it really is. The digital effects are way cool (dig those hellspawn with the tops of their heads lopped off!), so if you don't mind a juvenile lesson in pseudo-Catholic salvation, Constantine is just the movie for you! --Jeff Shannon |

The innovative hover disc is a cross between a frisbee and a balloon. Made of very lightweight materials, the disc has a circumference of approximately 34 inches. Even before you add air or helium the disc will fly through the air not unlike a like a large, flat frisbee. But add helium or air and you can make the disc perform unusual tricks with a little bit of practice. The disc's lightweight material may make it easy to puncture, but you can cover any holes with clear packing tape and you can also add more air or helium through the fill valve when it starts to lose its shape. The hover disc is designed for indoor and outdoor use but be careful when you play with it outside because it could easily blow away in strong winds. Helium not included. |

When he isn't rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kofi Annan and George W. Bush, the activist Bono has a side project he likes to call "U2." U2: Vertigo - Live From Chicago captures the band on two nights during their tour to support How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Once known for taking the most technologically extravagant shows on the road, the boys from Dublin have settled into a comfortable role of rock elder statesmen, placing emphasis on the anthems and weepers of their considerable body of work rather than gigantic lemons that descend from the rafters. Always a band that reflects the zeitgeist, this concert film finds them at their earnest best, with comparatively stripped-down stage production and superbly recorded sound. To call U2's more rocking songs "anthems" borders on understatement, and it is their anthems that ring most exuberantly in Chicago's United Center. Bono understandably looks heavier and wearier than in days past, perhaps due to the weight of the world he has hoisted onto his shoulders. While the icon roams the circular stage around the Metallica-style "snakepit," The Edge, drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and bassist Adam Clayton pin the songs to the floorboards and take them to the heavens. How can these guys not play fantastically together? Standouts include hits both classic and newly minted, among them "Beautiful Day," "New Year's Day," "Pride (In the Name of Love)," and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Late in the concert Bono makes his appeal to the leaders of the world to end extreme poverty, invoking the imagination of a country that put a man on the moon. Ingeniously, he asks the crowd to take out their cell phones and text-message an account that operates as a petition to end world hunger. With the stadium aglow in LED screens, the band smoothly glides into "One." Elsewhere, Bono invokes religion, donning a headband decorated with Islamic, Jewish, and Christian symbols, assuming the appearance of a grizzled No Nukes protester circa 1975. (Perhaps this is a new persona akin to The Fly?) Kidding aside, these may be days in which we need the uplift and passion of U2 more than the 1990s, when they dressed up as the Village People and occasionally performed at K-Mart. Not suitable for those who don't wish to save the world. --Ryan Boudinot |
This CD combines two Jackie McLean quintet sessions from the early '60s that capture the alto saxophonist in a significant period of transition. First up is a 1963 session with trumpeter Donald Byrd and two significant protégés. Byrd had been working for a while with pianist Herbie Hancock, but it was the first recording session for drummer Tony Williams, just 17 years old when he began working with McLean. The arrival of Hancock and Williams was momentous. They were already stretching the vocabulary of hard bop, and the horns respond accordingly. It's McLean's presence that's dominant, though. His hard-edged intensity always stood out, and there's an increasing bite in this period, leading up to his embrace of a much freer group format. The second session, from 1962, is more securely in the bop mold. It's another first-rate band of Blue Note regulars, with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Sonny Clark (like McLean, a master of blues-suffused bop), drummer Billy Higgins, and bassist Butch Warren. Over the years, these have been elusive recordings. Both appeared on LP (Vertigo and Hipnosis) years after they were recorded and in combination with other material. This is their first appearance on CD, and it's a limited edition, so McLean fans should act quickly. --Stuart Broomer Tags : Vertigo
