Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa." Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Woods also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall. --Jerry McCulley |

Jeff Bridges stars as Matthew Scudder, the flawed hero of Lawrence Block's novel. He's an ex-cop, now a private eye, who constantly battles his own alcoholism. His struggle isn't helped when he becomes involved with a hooker and, in trying to aid her, winds up at the center of a struggle involving pimps and drug dealers. Bridges, who played a similar role in The Morning After, seems to have a bone-deep understanding of this self-loathing substance abuser. But as good as Bridges is, he can't rescue the sluggish Oliver Stone script or Hal Ashby's slack direction. The only energy comes from then-newcomer Andy Garcia, who injects a manic vitality into the role of a high-strung drug dealer. --Marshall Fine |

The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protégé's activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the "tortured hero" mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they've brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported "kids' show" has dared to attempt. (Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.) Once again, Warner Brothers' cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. --Bruce Reid |

Sweet and refreshing, Horchata de Chufa is one of Spain's most famous drinks. Made of ground chufa nuts (actually the roots of the chufa plant) grown in the Valle de Nito in Spain, it is very lightly seasoned with cinnamon and lemon. No refrigeration needed until it is opened. Serve very cold! Horchata is the signature beverage of the Community of Valencia. From the Feria of Las Fallas in mid March and on through the summer, horchata is the choice for Valencians of all ages. La horchata de chufa is a Mediterranean product, not to be confused with Mexican horchata which is made of rice rather than chufa nuts. Egyptians used chufa nuts in ancient times,and it seems that chufa was also consumed by people in Asia. As with many other products, it was the Moors who first began cultivating chufa grass in Spain and originated the refreshing drink Horchata de Chufa from its tuberous roots. It is a favorite beverage in all of Spain, but particularly in Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía. There is no refrigeration needed to store this horchata, so you can keep it on your pantry shelf until you are ready to serve it.
