Part one of Guns N' Roses' ambitious second album is arguably the better of the two. It certainly rocks harder, though this seems to be more coincidence than anything else; which songs went on which CD looks to have been a random selection. Use Your Illusion I stays closer to the band's bluesy hard-rock roots, with guitarist Izzy Stradlin contributing some of the best songs, including "Dust N' Bones" and "You Ain't the First." "November Rain" (clocking in at over nine minutes) became an instant classic, and there are a fair number of straight-ahead rockers, such as "Perfect Crime," "Don't Damn Me," and "Garden of Eden." Taking the best from this album and Use Your Illusion II would have made a killer single CD, but there's enough good stuff here to make it worthwhile. --Genevieve Williams |
Had Use Your Illusion II been combined with Use Your Illusion I, keeping only the best material while dropping the filler, it would have been one of the best rock albums ever recorded. Instead, great songs like "Civil War," "14 Years," "Estranged," and "So Fine" compete with the inexcusable "Get in the Ring" and the well-intentioned but off-target cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." There's no point to the second version of "Don't Cry," either. On the other hand, when Guns N' Roses were good, they were very, very good, and some of the material on this album is unsurpassable. --Genevieve Williams |

To demonstrate the stunning beauty and overwhelming power of the Earth, Dr. Iain Stewart climbs into the crater of an active volcano in Ethiopia, jets into the stratosphere, climbs the frozen crests of the Alps, races the tide at the Amazon basin, dives into underwater caverns in Mexico, and generally enjoys himself to no end. His infectious enthusiasm is hardly necessary, though; Earth: The Biography (formerly The Power of the Planet) is five episodes of phenomenal images and fascinating information about how our planet formed and the potent yet delicate balance of life. Stewart, the program's host, seems destined to become the Carl Sagan of geology; his cheerful Scottish accent (he sounds like he walked out of Trainspotting) is just waiting for a catchphrase like "billions and billions" to make him a household name. Earth: The Biography juxtaposes things gigantic (tectonic plates) and teeny-tiny (plankton) while gracefully explaining the crucial role each plays in making the world habitable for life as we know it. There's even surprising humor, like demonstrating the ocean's currents through the movement of 29,000 plastic ducks that were swept overboard in a storm, or how the first thing jet pilot Joe Kittinger does, after successfully parachuting from the highest point in the stratosphere anyone has ever jumped (including 15 minutes of free fall), is light up a cigarette. Add in some CGI models of prehistoric beasts and volcanic activity, and you've got a completely addictive examination of the Earth in all its majesty. --Bret Fetzer |

After enduring years of tongue-in-cheek sequels, fans of the absurd 1983 slasher film Sleepaway Camp get the follow-up they've been waiting for in Return to Sleepaway Camp, which features original director Robert Hitzig once again orchestrating the blood-soaked shenanigans. Little seems to have changed at good ol' Camp Manabe in the 25 years since the slaughter of the first Sleepaway Camp: the kids are still foul-mouthed little monsters, the counselors still nitwits (and with Vincent Pastore--Big Pussy from The Sopranos--in charge, who can blame them?), and of course, there's still a killer on the loose who's brutally dispatching campers and staff alike. In short, it's business as usual for the Sleepaway Camp series, which is good news for those who found the 1983 film a gory, lowbrow guilty pleasure. Others who might've found it one of the more atrocious entries in the '80s slasher scene--or one of the weirdest, based on its infamous gender-bending conclusion--won't be swayed by the Return, which offers a heaping second helping of the original's moronic dialogue, loathsome characters and subtle-as-a-brick suspense. The low-wattage star power on hand--Isaac Hayes in one of his final roles as the camp chef and Felissa Rose, the killer from the first Sleepaway--aren't onscreen enough to generate much excitement, so what's left is a goofball exercise in gore that's probably best enjoyed by those whose love for the original film transcends all limitations. The DVD includes interviews with the new batch of campers-turned-corpses, a behind-the-scenes tour guided by Rose and producer Jeff Hayes, and a disposable music video for the theme song by Goat and Company. -- Paul Gaita |
