Produced by Ric Ocasek, Unlocked presents the Cars at their herky-jerky, hard-edged best. For those who followed the Beantown quintet in the 1980s, it's sure to come as a nostalgic experience--singer/bassist Benjamin Orr succumbed to cancer in 2000, while Todd Rundgren took Ocasek's place in 2006's "New Cars" reunion. Edited by Ocasek's son Eron, the 72-minute feature operates like a virtual scrapbook, alternating video-shot concert and backstage footage with radio interviews and stills. Consequently, as a disclaimer states at the beginning, the audio-visual quality is adequate at best. (Then again, this is a side of the band never captured by MTV.) Further, some of the bits are just plain silly, especially the dressing room antics. Fortunately, the rock-your-socks-off factor is high and there are unexpected surprises, like keyboard player Greg Hawkes's impromptu cover of the Cramps' "Human Fly." Of the performances, standouts include "My Best Friend's Girl" from 1979 and "Just What I Needed" from 1980, both recorded in Washington DC (like too many music films, locations are not identified until the end credits). Altogether, Unlocked exhumes 20 live tracks plus five bonus numbers, including an alternate version of Orr's enduring ballad "Drive." --Kathleen C. Fennessy |

Have you ever walked out to your vehicle on a brisk January night or on a hot, muggy July afternoon and wished you had a remote car starter? While some models require (costly) professional installation, Design Tech's 20021V remote car starter is great for both cold and hot weather use and is fairly easy for most people to install themselves. The starter includes a built-in self-diagnosis system and Cold Start option that automatically starts your vehicle whenever the temperature drops below 0 degrees F. It also monitors the battery voltage and fuel level to help prevent dead batteries and an empty fuel tank. Additional safety checks include making sure the vehicle is in park and the hood is down before attempting a start, a good thing to have if you ever find yourself working on your vehicle and accidentally activate the remote control module. The starter works on fuel injected, diesel, or carburetor vehicles with automatic transmissions. An auto-shutoff feature turns the vehicle off after 10 or 15 minutes of idling (you can program it to either time limit) to prevent overheating and help conserve fuel. A six second startup limit helps prevent damage to the starter motor, as well. If, after six seconds, the vehicle hasn't started, or if it stalls once it has started successfully, the unit will try restarting the engine two more times. An optional light activation and horn honk will let you know your vehicle has started successfully. The starter unit is programmed to one of 16 million different security codes and can "learn" unique codes for up to four different transmitters. For added security, the car starter is designed not to allow the vehicle to be driven or unlocked without the keys in place.--Carl Thress |
