Brouwer lays his soul bare, revealing a disarming honesty in themes ranging from loneliness, the loss of a Father, the search for home, consumerism, confession, and the hope and power of surrender. "Unfamiliar" is Brouwer's most transparent work to date, a powerfully honest song about growing up without a Father, the realities of death, and yet the hope of the redeemed hereafter. It's a standout track. The sound of "Unlearning" is a bit of a departure from Brouwer's first CD. The folk/rock/americana sound makes for a perfect fit with heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics and Matt's honest vocal delivery.![]() Tags : Unlearning

People Get Ready The Problem of Pain In Bethlehem Tonight Taunia Lea Road Song What's In a Name Missing Part Lead Me Stained Glass Window Learning and Unlearning Angel Love "Armed with a new producer, a refined sound and a new perspective on how his art should reflect a life lived under the gaze of Christ, Jim Cole releases his first new music in many a moon with Learning and Unlearning a lovely folk-inflected record that revels in simplicity yet communicates in a relevant and deeply affecting manner. Amidst a bed of acoustic instrumentation, Cole achieves his most personal statement ever. While not totally abandoning songs that are more church directed, Cole writes lyrics with an eye focused on life's joys, pitfalls and mundane moments seen from a faith-based perspective. Songs such as Taunia Lea (Cole's wife), Road Song Missing Part Stained Glass Window and Learning and Unlearning go deep into the recesses of human existence, relating a balanced view of a believer's journey from broken-ness to redemption. A nice version of the Curtis Mayfield classic People Get Ready displays a here-to-fore unheard soulful side to Cole's easy vocal style, likely to diminish (thankfully) the endless references to James Taylor that have plagued him throughout his career. Producer Ed Cash has assembled an accomplished cast of musicians who provide an empathetic backing that steer Cole's compositions toward a wonderfully realized amalgam of folk and Americana. Garret Buell (Caedmon's Call), Ben Shive (Andrew Peterson) and Byron House (Julie & Buddy Miller) contribute sublime moments that push Learning and Unlearning dimensions past conventional folk-pop records. Far removed from the rather market-driven pop sound and one dimensional focus of his past recordings, Learning and Unlearning finds Jim Cole an artist with much to say and a delightfully engaging way to say it. |
Three Powerful Documentary Shorts on One Disc -
Straight from the Heart, All God's Children, and De Colores.
Straight from the Heart
This film explores parents' journeys to a new understanding of their lesbian and gay children by presenting simple stories about real people: a police chief who talks about how proud he is of his lesbian daughter, a Mormon couple whose son is believed to be the first gay man in Idaho to have died from AIDS, and a black woman and her two lesbian daughters who had been accused of "catching" their lesbianism from white people.
This video clearly shows that prejudice against gays and lesbians is a form of bigotry inseparable from other manifestations of prejudice, particularly racism. Interviewees include PFLAG's Mitzi Henderson; Edmond L. Browning, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church; Police Chief Tom Potter; and Michael Bussee, Founder of Exodus International.
All God's Children
All God's Children presents a political, social, and religious analysis of sexual orientation within the context of the traditional African-American values of freedom, inclusion, and the Christian love ethic. Through the voices of politicians, religious leaders, academics, family members, and activists, All God's Children vividly illustrates the human toll exacted upon society by the unspoken stigmatization and alienation of lesbians and gay men.
De Colores
De Colores is a bilingual 28-minutes documentary about how Latino families are replacing the deep roots of homophobia with the even deeper roots of love and tolerence. Through moving personal stories we learn about how families are breaking cultural barriers and how love always prevails.
De Colores es un documental bilingüe de 28 minutos mostrando como las familias y comunidades latinas están reemplazando la homophobia con la tolerencia y el amor. A través de historias personales aprendemos como familias rompen barreras culturales y como el amor siempre prevalece. |

Unlearning to Fly is the memoir of a bookworm growing up in Alaska—among people whose resilience, restlessness, and energy find their highest expression in winter ascents of Mount McKinley or first descents of wild rivers. These are the flying stories of a fearful pilot, one who admires but does not emulate the more daring exploits of her father and her friends. The accounts of Jennifer Brice—at times poignant, funny, and downright nerve-racking—are engaging recollections of deadly, near-deadly, and occasionally comic encounters between human nature and Nature writ large. The unlikely romance between her parents, the Good Friday earthquake, the Alaska oil boom, a stint as a newspaper reporter, and the trials of a student pilot form a few chapters in Brice’s remarkable life. These are the stories in which the physics and metaphors of flight—center of gravity, angle of attack, wake turbulence—illuminate Brice’s remarkable life story, recounted in prose that takes wing. Treat Yourself to a Good Night's Sleep I Want to Sleep is an invitation to make peace with sleep rather than war on insomnia. When an estimated 76 percent of American adults use medications for troubled sleeping, and over 20 percent (the majority women) suffer from chronic insomnia, this book offers a fresh and promising perspective. Studies show that sleeplessness rarely is pathological in itself. It is a symptom caused by stress. Dr. Haug, a veteran psychotherapist, takes us one step deeper: Insomnia is not necessarily caused by stressful circumstances, but by how we handle them. During the day we may forge ahead using pressure. For sleeping at night, however, this proves to be the most counterproductive approach of all. If you habitually force performance by scaring yourself, insomnia might well be a needed wake-up call. Using real case studies and step-by-step guidance, Dr. Haug illustrates how to embrace sleep, rather than fight sleeplessness. Unlearning insomnia means changing your allegiance from being wired to being tired. I Want to Sleep is a practical, necessary, and engaging book. It is a hopeful and readable gift for all the sleepless people we love. |
