How do you follow a debut record that achieved out-of-the-blue grandeur on its way to selling a quarter of a million copies? For Maine's Ray LaMontagne, it's all about shaking up the formula, evading repetition and delivering the unexpected. Till the Sun Turns Black finds the introspective singer/songwriter complementing his folk-country ways with traces of strings and horns and spooky soulful background voices. Songs like "You Can Bring Me Flowers" and "Three More Days" are the most R&B-influenced, the latter shuffling about ala The Band or Tony Joe White. Despite its brooding lyrics, "Empty" has a rollicking, almost breezy delivery, a perfect balance to either the hushed title track, the unnerving "Be Here Now" or the horn-fortified waltz, "Gone Away From Me." Throughout the 11-song sequence, and especially on the final song "Within You," LaMontagne's voice remains the record's most crucial element, as vibrant as it is tattered and as harsh as it is flawless. --Scott Holter

As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash More from Mavis and the Staple Singers Have a Little Faith | A Piece of the Action | Only for the Lonely | The Best of the Staple Singers | Great Day | The Staple Singers: Greatest Hits |

The sound of Phil Collins's distinctive voice set against a pulsing synthesizer and pounding electro/acoustic percussion became one of the most characteristic and ubiquitous sounds of 1980s (and early '90s) rock. And if Collins's solo work during that period seemed occasionally indistinguishable from that of his band, it was only evidence of the remarkable transformation that Genesis had undergone from its late '60s art-school roots. Indeed, the idea of an eventual Greatest Hits package would have been laughable then. But as the original quintet turned quartet (with the departure of vocalist Peter Gabriel) and then trio (when guitarist Steve Hackett left), the spotlight focused with increasing intensity on Collins and his pop and R&B sense. Though it overlooks a few contenders ("No Reply at All" and "Taking It All Too Hard") in service of balance (and the inclusion of late-model Genesis frontman Ray Wilson), this is a good sampler of one of rock's most consistent (if predictable) hit-makers. Gabriel and Hackett also return for one new track, reuniting the original quintet for a richly textured update of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 's "The Carpet Crawlers." --Jerry McCulley

Two events force Kate (Jill Clayburgh) to confront the dissatisfactions of her life: her father's impending wedding and a job offer that would take her from Chicago to New York. Her relationship with Homer (Charles Grodin) is pleasant but shallow. When she meets Ben (Michael Douglas) at the wedding's rehearsal dinner--he's her future stepbrother--there's an immediate spark. They flirt on the way home, finding themselves in an arcade where they both prove to be intensely competitive. Their first encounter gets a little prickly, but soon they find their relationship taking a deeper and more complicated turn. It's My Turn would never be made now; too many scenes of people talking, too many unresolved questions. But the movie's attention to the details of human interaction, particularly the negotiations around a sexual encounter, make it richly rewarding. Douglas gives a strong performance and Clayburgh is superb; it's delightful to rediscover how smart and sexy she could be. There's a general impression that dozens of women-centered movies were made in the late 1970s, but in fact movies that explore life from a woman's point of view are rare. More impressive, though, It's My Turn was written and directed by women, and the male characters are as fully developed and multidimensional as the women. It's a small movie--it covers a weekend in Kate's life and no tumultuous decisions are made--but within that short span, a lot of life takes place. --Bret Fetzer

The Game of Life: Twists and Turns puts a new and modern spin on Hasbro's classic family board game. It is a game of choices, where players can "test drive" different lifestyles, take their chances and experience the twists and turns of real life. Jobs, money, marriage, children and all sorts of unexpected events -- just like real life, it's all here! Recommended for ages 8 and up, there are a thousand different ways to play this game, and no two games will ever be the same. Updating a Classic Like the classic version of the Game of Life, the Game of Life: Twists and Turns is based around real-life events. You'll choose a profession at the beginning of the game, and roll the dice to progress along the board. As you progress, you'll encounter all sorts of real-life events (injected with a hefty dose of humor, of course), including marriage, houses, cars and family matters. You'll essentially live real life and make life-defining decisions, but without having to live with the consequences. However, Twists and Turns has a number of updates in store. Not only does it offer far more choices and possibilities than the original, it also has a number of new technical features that both longtime fans and newly-introduced players will appreciate greatly. The game now features a "LIFEPod," which helps players keep track of time and manage their careers, houses, cars and families with the touch of the button. The high-tech interface adds loads of fun to the game. The innovations don't stop there: each player now gets their very own Visa credit card, which they can use to spend. This not only puts a fresh modern twist on the game, but it also could possibly teach younger players about credit card responsibility at an early age. This gives educational value to an already quirky and fun game.
An updated classic game, this version of Life features a LIFEPod to help keep track of players' careers, houses, cars, and families. |
