This outstanding set of six episodes from the fourth (1996) season of The X-Files offers an equal balance of superior stand-alone stories and intricate chapters of the show's ongoing conspiracy "mythology," providing viewers with an opportunity to savor consistently excellent writing and direction. The primary reason to own this set is the inclusion of "Home," an episode so unsettling that it was banned from Fox-TV after just one network broadcast (thus making it the most cherished episode for collectors). But the good news here is that all of these episodes are equally outstanding, representing the series cast and crew at their seasoned best, when the show had fully settled into the tantalizing complexities of its overall structure (most evident here in the related episodes "Herrenvolk," "Tunguska," and "Terma"). These shows also give David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson some of their finest moments, both dramatic and deliciously sarcastic, as the Scully-Mulder dynamic reaches its most satisfying level of comfort and teasing ambiguity. From deeply disturbing plots to the brand of offbeat levity that gives the show its unique appeal, these six episodes reveal the series at peak maturity, willing and able to push the limits of terror as never before seen on television. Certainly not for every taste (since they're sure to prove unsettling for the uninitiated viewer), but for die-hard X-philes, this is arguably the finest boxed set available. --Jeff Shannon |
A massive explosion occurred in 1908 in a remote part of Siberia, near the Tunguska River. The damage was colossal, with entire forests flattened by a blast that ignited firestorms, which raged out of control. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a fireball in the sky, and it seemed possible that a huge meteor had struck the earth with such a colossal impact that it caused the massive explosion. Over the decades, a mythology about what really happened at Tunguska has steadily grown, and in this tape the theory is advanced that an alien spacecraft tried to enter Earth's atmosphere at the wrong angle, became a huge fireball, and devastated the forests in Siberia. Various alternate explanations are examined and shot down (with reasoning that may make skeptics chortle), so that the only possible conclusion is that Tunguska was the "Russian Roswell." The slant of this tape is made obvious if one considers that the narration blithely mentions the famous 1947 Roswell incident as if it's unquestionably true that an alien craft crashed in the New Mexico desert, and therefore it's perfectly plausible that the same thing could also have happened 30 years earlier in Siberia. Skeptics will find this tape ludicrous, but the true believers in UFO lore will find it entertaining, as it does present a startling thesis as well as a bonus of "proof" of cover-ups by government agencies (including even Stalin's secret police) going back decades. --Robert J. In the United States the modern flying saucer era began in the desert of Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, but in Russia, the modern flying saucer era began in 1908, as villagers from a sparsely populated area of central Siberia, near the Tunguska River, witnessed a large glowing object streak across the sky and explode in midair with the force of an atomic blast equal to over 40 megatons, completely destroying miles of forest.Light from the blast was witnessed from thousands of miles away. Secrecy since the days of Stalin and the former Soviet Union have kept the truth about this event hidden until now. Hear from one of the last living eyewitnesses of this event as well as the experts, including a former KGB officer who describes the cover-up surrounding this event, and how metallic evidence of an alien spacecraft gathered by the soviet military from the site was discovered and then disappeared in secrecy. Includes the shocking facts behind this amazing story along with a fascinating series of photos, film footage and spellbinding interviews with researchers and the best known, most credible UFO authorities in the world today. Packed with bonus features, expert analyses, in-depth commentary and unforgettable conclusions about this amazing mystery. |
This is the only book written in the English language on Tunguska studies in the former Soviet Union and new independent states that is entirely based on first-hand accounts of serious researchers directly engaged in these studies. The book is objective and pays attention to both conventional and unconventional theories of the Tunguska space body's origin. |
Bill DeSmedt should be on the bestseller lists with Tom Clancy and Dan Brown. DeSmedt's ambitious and exciting debut novel, Singularity, mixes a post-Cold-War conspiracy with cutting-edge quantum physics and a century-old mystery to create a terrifying techno-thriller.A secret US government agency, CROM, fights terrorism by apprehending or terminating post-Soviet scientists before they sell the technology of mass destruction to terrorists. A rookie CROM agent, Marianna Bonaventure, and a brilliant consultant, Jonathan Knox, find themselves on an undercover mission to locate a missing Russian physicist. Instead, they discover a secret far scarier than terrorists with nuclear weapons. The famous "meteor" that devastated Siberia's Tunguska wasteland in 1908 was no meteor. It was a microscopic black hole that entered the earth's crust--and never exited. Trapped, it may eventually devour the earth. But a small, clandestine group has developed secret technology to capture the black hole. If the conspirators succeed, the world will be enslaved by a dictatorship made omnipotent by the black hole's quantum effects. If the conspirators fail, they will accelerate the black hole's destructiveness--and guarantee the earth's immediate annihilation. Bonaventure and Knox rush to stop the conspirators--but they may already be too late. --Cynthia Ward ![]() Tags : Singularity
