At least Rod Stewart is consistent. Long accused by critics of selling his considerable interpretative talents short and playing it safe for the trappings of fame, Stewart revisits the font of his latest career revival here. But while 2002's It Had To Be You at least turned on the novelty of hearing raspy Rod the Mod tackle a slate of American pop standards with a boozy, world-weary tone that sometimes reinforced the originals' intent with trans-generational flair, the British rock icon unfortunately reverted to form a year later on this 14-track sequel. Set against the laconic, cocktail-friendly productions of vets Richard Perry and Phil Ramone, Stewart's performances seem strangely detached throughout. Even when offered the chance at some real human interaction on a pair of ill-conceived duets with Cher (who at least attempts to bring some dramatic flair to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") and Queen Latifah (whose recent turn in Chicago informs the title track), Stewart seems almost blissfully unaware of their presence. These are songs that virtually demand to be acted out, not phoned in. Brilliant vocal performances often reinforce the notion of "the singer, not the song;" here that old adage sounds more like a suggestion of where to place the blame for this album's disappointments. --Jerry McCulley |

The music of singer-drummer Carpenter and her piano-playing brother Richard came to be called soft rock, but it's really just good, straight American pop. This CD, released in March 1998, is a collection of greatest hits, with a special emphasis on romance. In this crowd-pleasing 1983 comedy of high finance about a homeless con artist who becomes a Wall Street robber baron, Eddie Murphy consolidated the success of his startling debut in the previous year's 48 Hours and polished his slick-winner persona. The turnabout begins with an argument between super-rich siblings, played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche: Are captains of industry, they wonder, born or made? To settle the issue, the meanies construct a cruel experiment in social Darwinism. Preppie commodities trader Dan Aykroyd (perfectly cast) is stripped of all his worldly goods and expelled from the firm, and Murphy's smelly derelict is appointed to take his place, graduating to tailored suits and a world-class harem in record time. Eventually the two men team up to teach the nasty old manipulators a lesson, cornering the market in frozen orange juice futures in the process. Director John Landis (The Blues Brothers) doesn't have the world's lightest touch, but he hits most of the jokes hard and quite a few of them pay off. Silly but nostalgic, this UPN special from 1999 throws a bone or two to hard-core fans of sundry Star Trek television series and feature films. Seinfeld's Jason Alexander hosts, playing a faux James Tiberius Kirk and perfectly capturing the peculiar music of William Shatner's authoritative curtness and halting pontifications. Alexander's Enterprise captain is on a mission to note popular choices of longtime viewers in a number of areas, from "ultimate one-liner" to "best episode," with the winners previously selected via online voting. Naturally, one is going to take issue with many of the lists--"great beauties" is dominated by Kirk's various conquests, for instance--but that's half the fun, and in any case several categories are total no-brainers: Has there ever been a better Trek villain than Q (John DeLancie)? Speaking of the latter, DeLancie is the most ubiquitous presence in a welcome blooper reel culled from Deep Space Nine and Voyager, the erudite actor of stage and screen hilariously elocution-challenged at times. (The other delightful revelation is visual proof of those rumors that Tim Russ, who plays the starchy Tuvok on Voyager, is the biggest cut-up in Trek production history.) Besides that unexpected treat, there's a fine tribute to the late DeForest Kelley,--Dr. McCoy on the original series--including a couple of non-Trek moments featuring the once-busy character actor opposite Bette Davis and Henry Fonda. As for the "best episode" award, well, the debate over the greatest of Star Trek shows will not likely be satisfied by this program's somewhat dubious winner. Let the argument rage on. --Tom Keogh |
