In a restless world which demands permanent innovation and at the same time the preservation of tried and tested ideals, Evergrey are among the few bands who have succeeded in performing this difficult balancing act in artistic terms. Their intelligent dark melodic metal is marked by high compositional skill, their very own signature and a diversity which never ceases to amaze their audience. The songs by the band from Sweden are never one-dimensional or indeed predictable, but always accessible and based on clear concepts. As confident as we have known Evergrey for more than ten years, just as convincing do the band present themselves on their latest album; dynamic, powerful, and always haunting, Torn is a return to the dark, progressive roots of the Evergrey sound. The first 6000 copies of Torn come packaged in digipak format and contain 1 bonus track. Novelist H. G. Bissinger's story about a high school football team in Texas went to the big screen with Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role. The score and background music was largely composed for the film by indie faves Explosions in the Sky, with a little help from Daniel Lanois, David Torn, and Bad Company. Producer Brian Reitzell has gone against convention in designing musical atmospheres for the film that don't conform either to the martial music generally associated with football or the C&W associated with Texas. Instead, he opted for a more autumnal, introspective sound that serves as a perfect backdrop for the film, but also stands up on its own without benefit of any other audio-visual cues. |

Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton |

Paul Simon was in his mid-thirties, still a young man, when he made his acting and screenwriting debut in One Trick Pony back in 1980. But in the music biz, Jonah Levin, the semi-autobiographical character Simon portrays, is an old-timer, a relic of the '60s still trying to move beyond the one hit (a Vietnam-era protest tune called "Soft Parachutes") for which he's known. A "grown man living in a kid's world," as estranged wife Marion (Blair Brown) puts it, he and his band have been reduced to hitting the club circuit, traveling in a van, staying in $15 motels, trying to land a deal for his new songs but dismissed by clueless record company slugs as hopelessly uncommercial. So much for the story. When it comes to execution, Simon and director Robert A. Young do a decent job of it. Levin and his musicians (Simon's actual band at the time--including drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Tony Levin, guitarist Eric Gale, and keyboardist Richard Tee--all essentially playing themselves with different names) are living a fairly humdrum existence, and the film's tone is pedestrian as well; not a bad thing, really, as its low-key vibe proves quite winning in the end. Simon is no Olivier when it comes to acting, but he has a terrific supporting cast, including Brown, Rip Torn (as a smarmy label executive), Joan Hackett (as Torn's horny wife), Allen Goorwitz (excellent as a low-life promotion man), and even Lou Reed (as a producer who turns Levin's music to mush); performances by Sam and Dave, the Lovin' Spoonful, and the B-52s add some flavor as well. Most of all, there's Simon's music. Though neither his best nor best-known work, songs like "Late in the Evening," "Long, Long Day," and "Ace in the Hole" carry the film, and the band is superb. Combine that with the script's droll humor, and you've got a movie that's hardly a classic but still eminently watchable. --Sam Graham |

Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down conveys the raw, chaotic urgency of ground-force battle in a worst-case scenario. With exacting detail, the film re-creates the American siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu in October 1993, when a 45-minute mission turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban warfare. Helicopter-borne U.S. Rangers were assigned to capture key lieutenants of Somali warlord Muhammad Farrah Aidid, but when two Black Hawk choppers were felled by rocket-propelled grenades, the U.S. soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets of Mogadishu, attacked from all sides by armed Aidid supporters. Based on author Mark Bowden's bestselling account of the battle, Scott's riveting, action-packed film follows a sharp ensemble cast in some of the most authentic battle sequences ever filmed. The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement in Somalia, but Black Hawk Down makes it clear that the men involved were undeniably heroic. --Jeff Shannon |

To some, Lars and the Real Girl will play as comedy; to others, tragedy. Though Craig Gillespie (Mr. Woodcock) allows Lars Lindstrom (a mustachioed Ryan Gosling, miles away from Half Nelson) a happy ending, the road is far from smooth. This rumpled Midwesterner couldn't be more miserable. His brother, Gus (Paul Schneider, All the Real Girls), and sister-in-law, Karin (Emily Mortimer, Lovely and Amazing), fall over themselves to cheer him up, but Lars cannot be moved; he's been like that since childhood. Then a porn-addicted co-worker hips him to the lifelike Real Doll. The next thing everyone knows, Lars has a new girlfriend named Bianca. She's from Brazil, she's shy, and she uses a wheelchair. She's also made of silicon. (Because Lars is a devout Christian, hanky-panky is out of the question.) Since he's finally emerging from his shell, his doctor, Dagmar (Patricia Clarkson), advises Gus and Karin to play along with the "delusion." Soon the whole town, including Margo (Kelli Garner), who harbors a not-so-secret crush on her officemate, gets in on the action, forcing Lars to rejoin the human race or crawl deeper into psychosis. Written by Six Feet Under's Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl is built around such a preposterous premise, it's hard to know whether to laugh or cry. Fortunately, the actors play it straight. Gosling does his best to make Lars sympathetic, but Schneider and Mortimer, fully convincing in their concern, are the true heart and soul of this odd little film. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Yves Doumergue has stunned many knowledgeable magicians with his Ripped & Restored Card. If you ever wanted to do a torn and restored card routine with a one piece at a time restoration this DVD/video will teach you Yves' creative new methods which have been embraced by many professional magicians. Yves performs and teaches three outstanding routines. They are clever, relatively easy to perform and the visual restorations look completely impossible.
Routines performed and explained:
* Ripped & Restored: An outstanding new handling for the torn and restored card. A freely selected and signed card is torn into four pieces. The four pieces are visibly fused together one piece at a time until the entire signed card is restored. Everything is examinable and the restored card can be given as a souvenir.
* Puzzle Card: A freely selected and signed picture card is torn into four pieces and restored in the strangest way. After two of the pieces are fused together you magically restore the card in a 'mismade' condition where two of the corners are in the wrong places. Instantly and visually the card is restored in its entirety.
* Blended: A variation of Ripped & Restored where all four corners of the card are signed prior to the tearing. The restoration is made by making each of the signed pieces fuse together until the entire card is restored.
* Includes in-studio and live performances by Yves Doumergue. Everything is fully explained. Hosted by Laurent Beretta. |

Created by Black Isle Studios, makers of Baldur's Gate, Torn is a real-time role-playing game based in a new fantasy universe of action, adventure, wonder, and intrigue. Explore a whole new world with up to five other players via the Internet or LAN. Play as one of six wholly different races, such as the enigmatic, forest-dwelling sidhe, whose laughing eyes hide cold and cunning souls, or the hulking ogres of Torn, brutal but honorable creatures of surprising intelligence and unparalleled strength. There are countless tales in the world of Torn, as many as there are stars in the sky. Some, though, shine more brightly than others. One such tale is yours, the story of a wanderer damned by fate to bring dire misfortune to any place you remain and any companion with whom you travel. Roaming the realms of Agathe seeking release from your curse, you find yourself heading westward by sea to the sheltered peninsula of Orislane, a borderland kingdom separated from the continent by the mountains of the Stormcrown. In the distance, the omens of war loom over the Orislanian coast. What forces have conspired to set this conflict in motion? What plots have undone the former peace of this kingdom? A land of wondrous creatures, constant peril, untold riches, and immense power await you. Will your curse finally come to an end here? The fate of Orislane may lie in your hands. Set in Black Isle Studios's original fantasy world, Torn has a skill-based character system that allows for innumerable approaches to any problem in the game, whether through combat, guile, or diplomacy. Utilizing items of the player's own creation, four different realms of magic, and enough specializations and abilities to make every character unique, Torn will take the player through a twisting, epic tale of noble allies, vile treachery, vengeful tyrants, and maddened gods.
