Full Tilt isn't just an album title to diminutive slide guitar slinger Lil' Ed Williams. It's the only way he plays -- even on this CD's slow double entendre blues "Check My Baby's Oil," where Lil' Ed's guitar maintains its serrated keen as his Blues Imperials ply a gentle groove under their boss's most restrained warm-clay crooning. This disc also marks Ed and his backing trio's 20th year updating the slide-driven sound Hound Dog Taylor, Elmore James, Robert Nighthawk, and Ed's uncle J.B. Hutto defined in Chicago's fertile '50s and '60s blues scene. Williams assimilates his influences' finest qualities. He sings with the howling wildness of James and Hutto, which swaps the urban sophistication of the R&B classic "First I Look at the Purse" for a dirty juke joint patina. The James and Nighthawk inspired melodies of Ed's slide on the heartbreak ballad "Life Got in the Way" have the slow ebb of falling teardrops. And when Ed tackles Taylor's traditional set-ender "Take Five" his speed and precise intonation, also drawn from Nighthawk and James, allow him to execute a slew of delirious, whinnying, moaning slide effects without upending the song. Track-to-track Full Tilt is raw, deeply rooted, and unremittingly entertaining. -- Ted Drozdowski |
This is a comedy/drama starring Brooke Shields. She plays a pinball wizard who gets conned into joining a pinball hustler who has a vendetta against an old nemesis pinball pro named "The Whale" (Charles Durning). Despite the fact that Shields is only 14-years-old, she leaves home with the guy and travels across the southwest, on the way to Texas. This film is ridiculous, but great campy fun. The characters' actions are wrong on so many levels. No one seems to mind that a 14-year-old runaway has joined the pinball circuit! Durning has never looked fatter. Look for Lorenzo Lamas in a brief role. "Life is like a seagull. The more you feed it, the more it sh**s on you."Tags : Tilt

Sean Penn gives another powerhouse performance in All the King's Men, leading a topnotch cast in writer-director Steven Zaillian's underrated adaptation of the Pulitzer prize-winning 1946 novel by Robert Penn Warren. When you consider that the previous 1949 film version earned well-deserved Academy Awards for director Robert Rossen and actors Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge, it's no surprise that Zaillian's film was expected to earn similar acclaim, but lukewarm critical reception and disappointing box-office gave it the stigma of a noble failure. And while the film (which moves Warren's story from the Depression-era '30s to the early 1950s) suffers from uneven pacing, partial miscasting, and an occasional lack of dramatic tension, it still qualifies as a first-class production that resonates with the timeless relevance of Warren's piercing political classic. Like Broderick before him, Penn is riveting as Louisiana governor Willie Stark, an upstart political dynamo (freely inspired by controversial real-life Louisiana governor Huey P. Long) whose rise to power is ultimately doomed by corruption and betrayal. Jude Law costars as political reporter Jack Burden, our firsthand witness to Stark's rise and inevitable fall; his orbit of political insiders includes a corrupt judge (Anthony Hopkins) with a dark secret to hide; a longtime friend (Mark Ruffalo) and former lover (Kate Winslet) who fall victim to Stark's influence; and political staffers (James Gandolfini, Patricia Clarkson) who remain powerless against Stark's ill-fated populist juggernaut. At Sean Penn's request, former child star Jackie Earle Haley (from the original Bad News Bears) makes a welcome return to movies as Willie Stark's quietly intense bodyguard, "Sugar-Boy." Coproduced by Louisiana-born political consultant James Carville, filmed on authentic Louisiana locations and boasting all the stately, luxurious production values of a would-be Oscar contender, All the King's Men clearly benefits from Penn's fiery performance and Zaillian's earnest embrace of Warren's still-potent subject matter. And while the film's shortcomings may have prevented it from achieving unanimous acclaim, this is still a serious, well-crafted drama with much to say about the insidious potential for fascism in America, especially when well-meaning politicians lose their souls to power. --Jeff Shannon On the DVD |
The flashing lights and dark rooms of Las Vegas provide the backdrop for Tilt, a nine-episode ESPN series. A Mod Squad-esque trio of gamblers--Eddie (Eddie Cibrian, Baywatch Nights), Miami (Kristin Lehman, Dog Park), and Clark (Todd Williams, Lift)--maneuver through the world of high-stakes poker seeking to ruin a crooked champion player, Don "The Matador" Everest (Michael Madsen, Kill Bill, Vol. 2). The series teases out each player's backstory as they bet and bluff, trying to get enough leverage to hurt the Matador. Meanwhile, a revenge-driven Iowa sheriff (Chris Bauer, Broken Flowers) wants to put the Matador behind bars and he's not above getting dirty to do it. Strippers and brutal behind-the-scenes beatings give Tilt a good dose of sex and violence to accompany the wily machinations and philosophical musings about the game. Tilt works hard to be tough and cool--maybe a little too hard; sometimes the swirling camera moves, slow motion shots, and swaggering dialogue struggle to disguise weak plotting and thin characters. Nonetheless, Madsen's squinty charisma, distinctive rasp, and lazy style fit the setting perfectly and supporting appearances by Michael Murphy (Tanner on Tanner) and Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) give the show a boost. Poker fans will enjoy cameos by real poker champs and some of the extras, including an excerpt from the 1998 World Series of Poker. --Bret Fetzer |
If you like poker, especially Texas Hold 'em, you'll love "Tilt", starring Michael Madsen of "Reservoir Dogs." This three-disc, nine-episode dramatic series takes a wide-camera look at the world of tournament poker while introducing several story arcs, including the efforts of various upstart players and the FBI to take down fictional poker legend Don "The Matador" Everest (Madsen) toward an inevitable showdown at a dramatically heightened but credibly staged World Series of Poker. Created and produced by Brian Koppleman and David Levien who wrote and produced "Rounders," "Tilt" gives its audience an exciting look at the Vegas lifestyle through a gambling pro's point-of-view. |

Inversion therapy offers an easy, effective way to stretch out, reduce stress, and ease your back pain. Now FitForm makes the treatment accessible to more people than ever with this affordable inversion therapy table. Inversion therapy works by placing your body in line with the downward force of gravity. In the process, inversion elongates the spine, increases the space between the vertebrae, and relieves the pressure on discs, ligaments, and nerve roots. And less pressure means less back pain, as well as fewer headaches and neck problems. The FitForm table is made of durable heat-treated steel, with injection-molded parts that provide a smooth, finished quality. The adjustable roller hinges and cam locks, meanwhile, provide a custom rotation for beginners, regular inverters, and experts. Add an adjustable tether that lets you invert to any angle and specialized pivot bearings that provide a lifetime of squeak-free rotation and you have everything you need to keep your back pain-free. Other details include curved front ankle clamps that mold to the curve of your feet for added comfort and security; a removable nylon mat that cleans easily; and a frame that folds up compactly for easy storage. Best of all, the inversion table is remarkably easy to set up and use. It comes 85 percent pre-assembled, with the rest coming together in just 10 minutes or less. And to get you started, FitForm threw in an instructional DVD that guides you through your first moments of inversion, including how to set the table to meet your specific needs and how to perform certain stretching and strengthening exercises. The FitForm inversion table accommodates people who stand between 4 feet 8 inches and 6 feet 6 inches and weigh up to 250 pounds. And at 45 by 58 by 28 inches (W x H x D), it takes up a minimum of space. Finally, the table carries a two-year warranty. |
