While the Farscape crew barely maintains civility in the best of times, nothing in the series prepares the viewer for the devious and ruthless response they show when the DNA mad scientist offers them a way home in exchange for a sample of their DNA... and one of Pilot's arms. They warm up by hacking off Pilot's appendage in a savage amputation and then turn on each other when it becomes apparent that Moya can only get to one of their worlds. "They've Got a Secret" is a rather misleading title, for the secret belongs to the living ship Moya, and the crew spends the entire episode trying to find out what it is. D'Argo yanks the wrong nerve in Moya's network and shoots through the ship's bowels like a kid on a water slide. He awakens in a delusion that has him reliving his tragic past and building up to a murderous rage directed squarely at Crichton yet again. --Sean Axmaker

Super Duper Sumos is a string of butt jokes masquerading as a children's TV series. Three outsized guys--Pooma, Kimo, and Mamoo--fight evil as "Defenders of the Phat." Ms. Mister and her henchmen Dr. Stinger and Geghis Fangus at Bad Inc. are out to destroy the world. (Where they'll go when it's destroyed is never explained.) In the heat of battle, the Sumos "super-size" and grow even bigger. In flashbacks, they describe being trained by Wisdom San, who talks in a clichéd Borscht Belt accent. The pseudo-Japanese Kimo refers to "honorable this" and "honorable that," while Pooma talks about "my butt" as if it were another character. The endless shots of jiggling cheeks and cracks about butts make this show ideal viewing for junior Adam Sandlers. (Rated suitable for all ages, but inappropriate for children under 10: cartoon violence, vulgarity, brief nudity, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

On the morning of H. Jackson Brown's fifty-first birthday, he jotted down a few of the important things more than half a century of living had taught him. He enjoyed the exercise so much that he made it a weekly project. Later, a friend said he would like to try. Other joined in. Contributions from kindergarten kids, high school students, young married couples, and senior citizens made Brown realize that wisdom knows no age and that truth is truth no matter where you find it. What ultimately comes through in the contributions to Live and Learn and Pass It On is a sense of cheerfulness, resolve, and the importance of keeping things in perspective. A forty-two-year-old father wrote, "I've learned that a shoeshine box made by my eight-year-old son at Vacation Bible School is my most prized possession." "That's as powerful a statement about priorities and what makes life worth living as you will ever read," says Brown. This edition contains all three volumes of the book that spent more than 28 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

Author, populist, and radio commentator Jim Hightower is nothing if not direct. In Thieves in High Places, Hightower lambastes the current American power structure and exhorts his readers to fight against it. Hightower's indignation runs deep in this "us versus them" exposé of corporate malfeasance, governmental abuse, the militarization of American society, and the Bush administration's empire building. In the first part of the book, Hightower illustrates how the Bush administration and Congress work with major corporations (including our nation's vast media conglomerates) to add to their obscene wealth at the expense of America's working class, our environment, and (most lamentably) our rights and liberties. "The elites have pulled off a slow-motion coup, radically wrenching America's power balance from a people's democracy to Kleptocrat Nation." Hightower defines "Kleptocrat Nation" as "a body of people ruled by thieves...a government characterized by the practice of transferring money and power from the many to the few...[and] a ruling class of moneyed elites that usurps liberty, justice, sovereignty, and other, democratic rights from the people." His catalogue of corporate greed and governmental complicity is breathtaking in scope, and though he admits that the fusion of business and government is not new, he persuasively states that "never have so few done so much for so few." Unfortunately, Hightower's serious message is delivered in such a "down home" style, it may lose its impact on the more brainy among us. Also, one wishes there were more documentation for the copious examples and facts in the book. Still, Hightower's call to action is sincere, and his descriptions of the triumphs of average people over corporate power might give some fledgling activists some hope. Thieves in High Places urges Americans to reclaim control of our government--Hightower thinks we can with community organization and grass-roots movements. However, judging from his description of the current power structure, we are going to need all the help we can get. -- Silvana Tropea

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber
