This Robert Rodriguez-written-and-directed half of Grindhouse, his and Quentin Tarantino's $50+ million valentine to '70s exploitation fare, turns on the typically over-the-top tale of a go-go dancer (Rose McGowan) whose severed leg is replaced by an assault weapon-cum-prosthetic. But unlike the typically frenzied stew of pop gems, vintage soundtrack obscurities, and dizzy oddities Tarantino uses to score his Death Proof half of the project, Rodriguez continues his John Carpenter-inspired habit of writing and performing the music for his. Anchored by a snarling, guitar-driven instrumental title theme that sounds like it was piped in straight from a strip club in Hades, the director's score is a gritty, frequently metal-driven sonic m#233;lange. Previous musical cohort Graeme Revell again collaborates on a handful of tracks (with additional contributions from Carl Thiel, George Oldziey, and Rick Del Castillo), and there are moments that instantly recall their dank work on Sin City, particularly the throbbing sax-uality of "Grindhouse Blues." Star McGowan contributes a trio of languorously wasted vocal turns on a cover of "You Belong to Me" and the alternately electro-clubby/flamencoesque Rodriguez originals "Useless Talent #42" and "Two Against the World." Completing the score's evocative musical recipe, Nouvelle Vague offer up a breathy, tongue-in-cheek cover of the Dead Kennedys' "Too Drunk to Fuck" while Chingon turns in a searing, Latin-metal fusion take of Rodriguez's own "Cherry's Dance of Death." --Jerry McCulley |
Dan Curtis, the creator and producer of such out-of-the-ordinary TV classics as the willfully offbeat gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the proto-X-Files series The Night Stalker, remains best known for the Zuni fetish doll that terrorizes Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror. The wild-eyed doll, with its snapping jaws and screeching yells, borders on camp, yet its relentless attacks and single-minded, homicidal drive make it an absolutely terrifying figure in the climactic chapter of this trilogy of short films based on stories by Richard Matheson. In the first story, "Julie," Karen Black plays a mousy college professor blackmailed by an obsessed student, and in "Millicent and Therese" she plays sisters consumed with an intense hatred of one another that comes to a head when their father dies. Both of these films conclude with Twilight Zone-ish twists and are more clever than gripping, kept alive mostly by Black's gleefully theatrical performances. With "Amelia," however, Black delivers an almost solo show, playing against the famous Zuni fetish doll, a wooden statue that comes to life when the a protective chain slips off the figure and releases the evil spirit. Curtis turns her apartment into a claustrophobic cage trapping the increasingly hysterical woman as the unstoppable figure hacks at her legs with a kitchen knife and chomps down on her arms and neck with the relentless intensity of a bulldog. It's still a classic of small-screen horror. --Sean Axmaker |
Experiment in Terror, a stylized noir thriller, was director Blake Edwards's second film in 1962, the first being a devastating portrait of alcoholism, Days of Wine and Roses. Neither film would seem standard fare for a filmmaker best known for his sophisticated slapstick comedies. For Experiment in Terror, Edwards perfected the stylish black-and-white cinematography he used to great effect in the 1950's TV series Peter Gunn. Glenn Ford plays a stalwart G-man out to thwart psychopathic extortionist Ross Martin's plans to force bank clerk Lee Remick to rob the bank where she works. San Francisco locations have never looked better or more ominous. One particularly chilling scene unfolds in the loft of an artisan who makes mannequins for a living ... though not for long. Blake Edwards's experiment in suspense grabs hold of you from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the final showdown at Candlestick Park. The film also features a near-legendary score by Henry Mancini. --Kristian St. ClairTags : Experiment

Aspen is indicated for people who are seized by sudden fears or worries for no specific reason, and who may therefore be generally nervy and anxious. A typical need for Aspen is for waking in fear from a bad dream, even if the dream itself is forgotten. Aspen is Enhanceful for young children experiencing nightmares and night terrors (see also Rock Rose). Aspen fears can occur during day or night; an inexplicable abnormal apprehension fearfulness or sense of foreboding may strike when alone, or suddenly in the company of friends, and may be accompanied by trembling. The positive potential of Aspen is a state of inner peace, security and fearlessness. Apprenhension is replaced by a desire for adventure and new experiences, disregarding difficulties and dangers. As Dr Back wrote: 'Once we come to that realisation, we are beyond Discomfort and suffering, beyond care or worry or fear, beyond everything except the joy of life, the joy of death, and the joy of our immortality ... we can walk that path through any danger, through any difficulty, unafraid'. |
