Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts has spent most of his life feeling 'insignificant'. Bullied at school for being 'different', he realized growing up that he had one true friend and that was his voice. Singing was his escape. He was able to lose himself in his own little world - the vicious words of his tormentors replaced by hauntingly beautiful lyrics and melodies that lifted his heart and spirit. It was a love, a passion, a lifeline that would follow Paul into adulthood and help him through many more periods of adversity. Though it's fair to say that when Paul strolled awkwardly - almost apologetically - onto the Cardiff stage for his first Britain's Got Talent audition a week before that final, in his now infamous £35 Tesco suit, and announced to Simon and fellow judges Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan that he was going to sing opera, they never thought for one minute they were looking at their winner. Resplendent in voice and manner, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti deliver 21 songs of traditional sacred music and secular numbers in a remarkable 1999 live recording from the opulent Viennese concert hall (Konzerthaus), with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and a renowned choir. The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Only John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" doesn't quite work in this grand setting. --Martin Keller |

This CD is a compilation of (mainly) devotional music sung by Pavarotti when he was in or near his prime, most going back, gloriously, to 1976. Precisely what Orfeo's lament (from the Gluck opera) is doing in a recital called "O Holy Night" is beyond me, but the rest of the selections are well chosen. The title song is gorgeously enough performed to be worth the album's asking price, the tenor's voice ringing out with great clarity and beauty, and the selection from Rossini's Stabat Mater is even more thrilling, with its ascent to high D flat near its close. Verdi's "Ingemisco," from his Requiem, is handsomely and sensitively delivered, and the others elections, with or without choir, are simply stunning. The popular group of three Irish tenors performs a lively program of ballads, folk songs, and Irish standards before an appreciative audience in Belfast. Ronan Tynan, Anthony Kearns, and Finbar Wright perform together and in solo spots (and John McDermott, who has performed with the group previously, sings two songs during a solo guest appearance). Decked out in cutaway coats and surrounded by an orchestra, the singers give full voice to such songs as "The Last Rose of Summer," "Fields of Athenry," "The Kerry Dance," and "Isle of Innisfree," a number whose appearance in a John Wayne film is duly noted. Those who fondly recall Van Morrison's collaboration with the Chieftains may find themselves fascinated by Finbar Wright's evocative version of "Carrickfergus," and the many devotees of Riverdance will no doubt enjoy that show's anthem, "Lift the Wings." As might be expected, the tenors have beautiful, classically trained voices, and they're able to transform even the most simple songs into soaring and majestic anthems, much to the delight of the audience. A cynic might consider the singing of the tenors to be an unchallenging mainstream presentation of Irish music, but it's all presented with good humor and many will find this highly entertaining. --Robert J. George Frederick Handel, suffering the ravages of a stroke, emotionally spent and nearly bankrupt, had attained in his youth a considerable reputation as a composer. Now he faced the looming terror of debtors' prison. In the depths of this "dark night of the soul", came the opportunity to write the MESSIAH. Handel fell into a frenzy for 24 days and nights, caught up in whirlwind of music that brought him to heaven's door. His servant found him bent over with tears streaming down his face, "Me thinks I have seen the Great God himself. Hallelujah, Hallelujah." MESSIAH has the power to bring kings and paupers, Christians, Jews and Moslems to their feet in a moment of musical transformation. Which is exactly what happened in Bethlehem, in the Church of the Nativity, built in 326 AD on the very site where Christ was born. Surrounded by tanks, brought to protect the eclectic gathering of dignitaries from all sides of the peace process from those who would terrorize the peacemakers, the ancient Church was filled with Handel's passionate and stirring music. And what sweet music it was. An orchestra composed mostly of Russian Jewish immigrants, who literally kissed the ground of Israel when they arrived. A technically superior choir of gifted singers, La Camerata Nuove from Washington, D.C. A conductor and musical director, Francisco de Araujo, driven by his own internal fire, who spent twenty years of his life convincing the Church Fathers to bring his dream to fulfillment. Francisco's passion and the choir and soloists' acute awareness of the heart-expanding meaning of the moment, the place and the music is not lost in the bringing of this event to video. It brings Handel's beloved masterpiece together with the beauty of the holy sites of the homeland of Jesus, the Messiah of the title. I cannot imagine that Handel could be more pleased. Anyone attending a Messiah sing-along is most likely to fit in when using this old favorite edition. The musicological work has been superseded by Watkins Shaw's edition for Novello, but his piano reductions are idiosyncratic. This piano-vocal score has no measure numbers or rehearsal figures, but the reduction is pianistic in scope. The choral lines are in smaller type but are workable. The price is of course also highly attractive.
