Kids' Favorite Songs kicks off with a cackle-worthy parody of Bob Dylan doing "Old McDonald," and from there the groovy gags keep comin' 'round the mountain. Everywhere Elmo turns on Sesame Street monsters spontaneously burst into song, and all because they want him to feature their favorite tunes on his forthcoming radio countdown. For Telly, winnowing the hits to one is akin to Cookie Monster choosing between a macaroon and a figgie bar: at first he's sure that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" lights his fire, but then he says bye-bye to a black sheep. The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. Everyone's favorite preschool monster demonstrates three activities in this compilation of some popular "Elmo's World" segments from Sesame Street. Joining him are segment regulars Dorothy the pet goldfish and Mr. Noodle, the lovable, bumbling adult stand-in for children, who makes mistakes but perseveres until he gets it right. In each episode, real children also take turns mastering the skill. In "Dancing," Elmo shows off his finesse at the flamenco and hula, while the children choose more free-form moves. (Elmo's monster friend Zoe also makes a cameo appearance.) In "Books," a boy and his father visit the library in search of dinosaur books. And in "Music," kids play the flute and violin, while Mr. Noodle is a little slow in learning to bang the drum. For parents who meant to tape the "Elmo's World" segments, but never quite did it, this 45-minute video is a lucky break. Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), the phobic private detective on psychiatric leave from the San Francisco police department, has his work--both professional and personal--cut out for him in Monk: Season Six. Typical of the long-running TV dramedy, Season Six doesn't cultivate any new story arcs played out over its 16 episodes. But Monk does get a little closer both to understanding himself and the mystery behind his wife Trudy's unsolved murder--the defining event that drove Monk into off-the-charts obsessive-compulsive behavior. The season opens with the enjoyable "Mr. Monk and His Biggest Fan," guest-starring Sarah Silverman as Marcy Maven, a largely benign stalker of Monk who annoys him and his long-suffering assistant, Natalie (Traylor Howard). When Marcy is accused of using her dog to murder a neighbor, however, Monk leaps to her rescue, endangering himself and Natalie. The episode is particularly noteworthy for a scene in which Monk reluctantly takes part in a go-on-a-date-with-a-studly-cop charity auction, and no one bids on him. (Except Marcy, of course.) "Mr. Monk and the Rapper" stars Snoop Dogg as a successful rap artist who hires Monk to prove he didn't murder a rival. Problem is, Monk actually believes Dogg's character did the misdeed. The story re-introduces Monk's neurotic tendency to blend in with stressful situations during a kind of mental blackout. Shalhoub is hilarious taking on hip-hop affectations in his language and manner, and he has the same chameleon-like problem in a later episode called "Mr. Monk Joins a Cult." In the latter, Monk infiltrates a religious cult under the sway of a charismatic leader (Howie Mandel) suspected of murder. But while investigating the alleged spiritual figure, Monk is persuaded by him to leave his life and join the group. Monk's psychiatrist, Dr. Kroger (Stanley Kamel), proves instrumental in helping Monk free himself from the cult, one of many services that makes Monk feel obliged to help Kroger when the shrink's son, Troy (Cody McMains), gets in trouble in "Mr. Monk and the Buried Treasure." One of the more harrowing scenes in Season Six takes place in that story: Monk and Troy are buried alive in a car covered by a ton of gravel. "Mr. Monk and the Man Who Shot Santa" finds Monk a pariah after being accused of wounding a seemingly friendly fellow tossing stuffed toys to people on the street. Finally, the two-part "Mr. Monk Is On the Run" finds Monk himself turned fugitive after he appears to have shot a man involved in Trudy's death. Pursued by a crooked lawman (Scott Glenn), Monk conspires with Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levin) to help him disappear, much to the distress of Natalie. --Tom Keogh |

Chicago director Rob Marshall's pretty but empty (or pretty empty) film has all the elements of an Oscar® contender: solid adaptation (from Arthur Golden's bestseller), beautiful locale, good acting, lush cinematography. But there's something missing at the heart, which leaves the viewer sucked in, then left completely detached from what's going on. It's hard to find fault with the fascinating story, which traces a young girl's determination to free herself from the imprisonment of scullery maid to geisha, then from the imprisonment of geisha to a woman allowed to love. Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), a young girl with curious blue eyes, is sold to a geisha house and doomed to pay off her debt as a cleaning girl until a stranger named The Chairman (Ken Watanabe) shows her kindness. She is inspired to work hard and become a geisha in order to be near the Chairman, with whom she has fallen in love. An experienced geisha (Michelle Yeoh) chooses to adopt her as an apprentice and to use as a pawn against her rival, the wicked, legendary Hatsumomo (Gong Li). Chiyo (played as an older woman by Ziyi Zhang), now renamed Sayuri, becomes the talk of the town, but as her path crosses again and again with the Chairman's, she finds the closer she gets to him the further away he seems. Her newfound "freedom" turns out to be trapping, as men are allowed to bid on everything from her time to her virginity. Some controversy swirled around casting Chinese actresses in the three main Japanese roles, but Zhang, Yeoh and Gong in particular ably prove they're the best for the part. It's admirable that all the actors attempted to speak Japanese-accented English, but some of the dialogue will still prove difficult to understand; perhaps it contributes to some of the emotion feeling stilted. Geisha has all the ingredients of a sweeping, heartbreaking epic and follows the recipe to a T, but in the end it's all dressed up with no place to go.--Ellen A. Kim |
