Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks--bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps--but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent. --Dan Gennoe |
After three albums that seemed to find Moby in some sort of creative stasis, Last Night sees the once-restless DJ/producer changing the record and returning to one of his first loves: the heaving dancefloors of his native New York. Soulful, uplifting piano rave is the order of the day here, and while some hallmarks of Play remain--Moby still has a fascination for long, tearful synth lines and sampled vocals, which he drops in here and there, seemingly to yield the maximum emotional response--Last Night still feels like a clean slate. "I Like to Move in Here" shimmies along on a languid house beat that doffs a cap to early hip-hop in the shape of a cameo from MC Grandmaster Caz, one of the writers of "Rapper's Delight", while "Everyday It's 1989" is the sort of overdriven, ecstatic piano house that Moby perfected on his 1995 classic Everything Is Wrong. There's more guest spots in the shape of British MC Aynzli, the Nigerian 419 Squad and Sylvia from dark NYC disco band Kudu, but the most impressive thing about Last Night is the peaks that Moby can reach when he's working alone: see the grand, emotive swell of "Sweet Apocalypse", cold synths and driving beats that, were it released by James Murphy, would be hailed as genius--and rightfully, too.--Louis Pattison |
"A fusion of Tigerbeat6's pop destruction and 2ManyDJs' mainstream mash-ups." -URB "Girl Talk...accelerates beats, distorts textures, pitches up flow, and sets up strange juxtapositions to render absurd the sexed-up aura of hip-hop and dance pop." - CLEVELAND SCENE "In a time when kids can barely sit through an entire album by just one artist, this A.D.D. mix will keep them sedated and/or spastic." - XLR8R Girl Talk (a.k.a. Gregg Gillis) is back with his third album on Illegal Art! With each release getting closer to his notorious semi-naked live show, Night Ripper is focused less on beat-fuckery and more on bringing heat to the party. It bangs as a continuous mix packed with wildly disparate Top 40 genres and eras. Current hip-hop hits, soft rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers and rock anthems are all layered and pieced together into one nonstop celebration of pop and excess declared "a plunderphonics party record" by Mark Hosler of Negativland. Girl Talk tours regularly and actively participates and collaborates with other "on the verge" Midwest and East Coast artists such as Grand Buffet (Fighting), Drop the Lime (Tigerbeat6), Chris Glover (Interscope) and Hearts of Darknesses (Schematic/Asphodel). |

Yes, electronica has taken over the world of music. All you need to do is take a look at the first shot of Underworld's live concert video to see that. The sprawling, dancing masses that cover the fields testify that the medium has found its way out of dark, sweaty raves and into the global mainstream. The shot makes the crowds at Woodstock seem small. However, while seeing electronica live can be a thrilling experience, watching it performed at home on your television is a completely different story. The British trio Underworld is widely considered to be one of electronica's most popular acts (same class as the Chemical Brothers and the Orb), and this DVD presents nine of their hyper, 10-minute-plus jams in five different countries (Japan, Holland, Belgium, England, and Ireland). While the sound is crisp and the beats infectious, there's not much to watching an electronica band (you usually have your eyes closed at a show, frantically dancing). The band tries to rectify this problem by using Alan Parker-esque, headache-inducing editing techniques and more strobe-lighting effects than the human brain can possibly handle in one sitting. Also, to make up for the lack of dynamics, Underworld has packed this DVD with a ton of goodies. You can program the concert any way you'd like to hear it; it contains five minutes of outtakes and a couple bonus tracks; and, most quizzically, they included the full 90-minute visuals shown on the large video screen behind the band. Some hardcore fans may find the screen graphics mesmerizing, but mostly it feels like watching a screensaver with a soundtrack. If you can't wait for Underworld to come to a field near you, grab the DVD; otherwise, just go to a rave. It's cheaper. --Dave McCoy |

Professor David S. Landes takes a historic approach to the analysis of the distribution of wealth in this landmark study of world economics. Landes argues that the key to today's disparity between the rich and poor nations of the world stems directly from the industrial revolution, in which some countries made the leap to industrialization and became fabulously rich, while other countries failed to adapt and remained poor. Why some countries were able to industrialize and others weren't has been the subject of much heated debate over the decades; climate, natural resources, and geography have all been put forward as explanations--and are all brushed aside by Landes in favor of his own controversial theory: that the ability to effect an industrial revolution is dependent on certain cultural traits, without which industrialization is impossible to sustain. Landes contrasts the characteristics of successfully industrialized nations--work, thrift, honesty, patience, and tenacity--with those of nonindustrial countries, arguing that until these values are internalized by all nations, the gulf between the rich and poor will continue to grow. |
