Twelve years ago, the Earth was attacked by giant invaders. To defend our planet, the Earths greatest minds and corporations assembled to design a giant robot of incredible power. Unfortunately, as with most government projects, the contract went to the lowest bidder. Fortunately, by the time the robot was ready, the mysterious invaders had already disappeared without a trace. The giant robot became first a curiosity, then a tourist attraction. But now the invaders are back and the only thing in their way is Dai-Guard and a young team of office workers whove been supplementing their regular incomes as part time pilots and tour guides. Can these reluctant heroes halt their alien foes while simultaneously concealing the defects in their giant robot? Find out in the first spectacular volume of Dai-Guard! |
The most eagerly awaited event in the editorial cycle at TIME Magazine is always the selection of the cover. The best covers capture the zeitgeist of the week while surviving the judgment of history. As browsing this collection of TIME cover art prints shows, TIME is as good a record as any of who and what mattered over the past 80-plus years. And so when TIME captures a person, an event or a trend within its iconic red borders, the magazine is adding that extra dose of significance that no other publication can quite match. That is one reason why the original artwork for more than 800 TIME covers now resides in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. Thanks to an amazing roster of artists, photographers and graphic designers, from TIME's earliest charcoal drawings of cover subjects to its later black-and-white photography to the more recent paintings and stunning color photography, TIME covers have always been, sometimes quite literally, works of great art. And, while the times may change, the TIME cover, with its iconic red border, has never lost its power to immediately send the signal that this person or event or idea is important to our lives, that in some way history is being made before our eyes. |

Since 1987 this power trio has churned out Black Sabbath-influenced grind-sludge metal for a fanatical underground following. Part of the early '90s "Seattle scene," the Melvins never achieved the radio airplay of their contemporaries, though founding members Buzz "King Buzzo" Osborne (the eccentric, Afro-ed singer-guitarist) and Dale Crover (drummer-vocalist) are beloved and prolific fixtures on the indie rock scene. Their latest seven-song outing on fellow quirky musician (and Osborne's Fantomas bandmate) Mike Patton's Ipecac label will likely not boost them out of relative obscurity, but it's an entertaining aural journey nonetheless. From the heady 'n' heavy intensity of "Black Stooges," which ends with several minutes of drums and feedback, to the winning speedy, countrified punk power of "Dr. Geek" and the garage metal of "Little Judas Chongo," Hostile Ambient Takeover is, as the title suggests, at once more punky and more ambient than previous swampy efforts. There are some lengthy, ponderous, slo-mo entries, which is not unexpected of the Melvins, while the nearly 16-minute album closer is a wash of mostly instrumental noise that ranges from ominous to space age (vocals kick in 10 minutes into the song). Oddball but engaging, the Melvins have carved out a unique niche, which they dig deeply into on Hostile Ambient Takeover, their 18th album of aural idiosyncrasy. --Katherine Turman |
Welcome to the second dose of The Takeovers, courtesy of two members of Guided By Voices: The legendary Robert Pollard and the less so Chris Slusarenko. The newest release, Bad Football, finds the boys collaborating again and coming up with a slightly more song-oriented album every bit as perverse as 2006's Turn to Red. Calling on likeminded bedfellows like Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), Tad Doyle (Tad), John Moen (The Decemberists) and Dan Peters (Mudhoney) to help follow their tuneful and psychedelic hearts, the Takeovers waste no time pushing aside the sophomore curse. In fact, if you like John, Paul, the bass player from Wire and/or Guided By Voices, you're in good hands with Bad Football. |
In a world of color-by-numbers pop performed by painted faces and hand-picked record company doll babies, Pittsburgh's The Takeover UK stand in sharp relief. They are unabashedly pop, though their punk attitude comes shining through. Thick power chords and snotty vocals that teeter between sugar and snarl collide against a thick, Spector-like wall of sound fulfilling the promises of Johnny Thunders and the Ronnettes. Hints of '70s glitter put a coat of high-gloss on their blue-collar work ethic, but there is no concealing their guts. The Takeover UK has what it takes: an astonishing ability to craft scores of great songs that make people move. "Pop is not a dirty word," says guitarist Mark. "We are chasing the perfect pop single." |
Though followers of current science fiction television series may dismiss V: The Final Battle as a quaint relic from the pre-computer animation days, the six-hour miniseries about an alien invasion of Earth was a ratings juggernaut for NBC in 1984 and should still provide some entertainment for hard-bitten devotees and fans of '50s-style sci-fi. The Final Battle picks up four months after the shock conclusion of the 1983 prequel miniseries, with a small group of humans known as the Resistance struggling to convince their fellow humans that a fleet of seemingly friendly visitors from space are in fact bent on world domination. Executive producer Kenneth Johnson (who oversaw most aspects of the first series) only supervised the sequel's script (which underwent several changes before its airing), and the writing occasionally suffers due to the lack of his attention. But the series still delivers its share of action and intrigue, as well as one showstopping gruesome moment involving the birth of interspecies twins. Acting is again a stumbling block, with leads Marc Singer and Faye Grant as bland as any performers from the American International Pictures stable; character actor Michael Ironside makes the strongest impression as a tough Resistance member, and a pre-Freddy Krueger Robert Englund is amusing as a kind-hearted alien. The miniseries was followed by an inevitable weekly series featuring most of the same cast, which was demolished in the ratings by Dallas, but a faithful Resistance-like following remains to this day. --Paul Gaita |

From the most trusted voice on transition, a revised edition of the classic practical guide to dealing with the human side of organizational change. The business world is a place of constant change, with stories of corporate mergers, layoffs, bankruptcy, and restructuring hitting the news every day. Yet as veteran consultant William Bridges maintains, the situational changes are not as difficult for companies to make as the psychological transitions. In the best-selling Managing Transitions, Bridges provides a clear understanding of what change does to employees and what employees in transition can do to an organization. Directed at managers and employees in today's corporations, Bridges shows how to minimize the distress and disruptions caused by change. Managing Transitions addresses the fact that it is people who have to carry out the change. When the book was originally published a decade ago, Bridges was the first to provide any real sense of the emotional impact of change and what can be done to keep it from disrupting the entire organization. With new information and commentary on layoffs, corporate suspicion, and the increasing tumult in the business world, Managing Transitions remains the definitive guide to dealing with change. |
Praise for Valuation for Mergers, Buyouts, and Restructuring"Enrique Arzac has provided an excellent analytical framework for the LBO business."--William T. Comfort, Chairman, Citigroup Venture Capital "Enrique Arzac has created a masterpiece--his work combines the theoretical with the practical. He has created an invaluable reference guide that is thoughtful, complete and very user friendly. He provides insight into the theory behind core valuation, LBO's, and options pricing, which creates the foundation for mergers, buyouts and restructuring. In addition to the theoretical, he provides practical insight into deal structuring and deal dynamics. His work should be standard material for all incoming associates."--James P. McVeigh, Managing Director, Corporate & Investment Banking, Banc of America Securities "This first-rate book of applied financial theory provides the tools for financial institutions and capital market participants seeking a methodology for comparing, contrasting, and evaluating investment opportunities and options. By inc orporating over 30 years of research, teaching, and practical experience, Professor Arzac has created a text that us not only timely, but timeless in its usefulness to anyone interested in learning the applications of financial theory for the best and most useful allocation of the scarcest economic resource in the world--capital."--William W. Priest, Co-Managing Partner, Steinberg, Priest and Sloane Capital Management and Former Chairman and CEO of Credit Suisse Asset Management "There are two important aspects in graduate business education. The first is acquiring a thorough understanding of the theories of modern finance and the second is acquiring an appreciation for how these theories can be applied to important decisions. Enrique Arzac has taken on this task and made it a successful venture for readers of this book. Unlike other texts on valuation, he explains the reasons for the process and sequence that he recommends rather than just providing the ingredients and the recipe without explanation. This is a welcome addition to the literature in applied corporate finance."--Joel M. Stern, Managing Partner, Stern, Stewart & Co. |
Praised everywhere as a stunning work of reportage, TAKEOVER lays bare a hidden agenda, three decades in the making, to allow the White House to wield enormous powers, unchecked by Congres or the courts--an agenda that links warrantless wiretapping and Bush's judicial nominees, torture and Cheney's energy task force, the faith-based initiative and the imprisonment of citizens without trial. TAKEOVER tells the story of how a group of true believers, led by Cheney, set out to establish near-monarchical executive powers that, in the words of one conservative critic, "will lie around like a loaded weapon"for any future president. |
