Whether Tom Cruise's portrayal of a 19th century American soldier cum samurai warrior will be remembered with the same pangs of pop-cultural bemusement that befell John Wayne playing Genghis Khan remains to be seen. But its musical soundtrack does mark an auspicious occasion: pop musician-turned-composer Hans Zimmer's 100th score since beginning his film career in 1988. A pioneer of fusing both the electronic and orchestral and the Westernized with the indigenous, Zimmer does both here with skill, drawing heavily on samples of the traditional Taiko (a massive Japanese drum) for its rhythmic action sequences, while constructing a melodic Western motif for Cruise's character that's both centerpiece and counterpoint for the score's transcultural intent. Aside from the brief, ominous thunder of the expected action/suspense boilerplate, Zimmer has constructed passages of gentle, Asian-inflected pastoralism that have parallels with much of his evocative work on The Thin Red Line. Those cues are the score's very soul, a canvas against which his more traditional themes reverberate all the stronger. --Jerry McCulley |
The Cowboy Junkies' gothic Americana takes a psychedelic hue on At the End of Paths Taken, replete with Beatlesque string sections and snarling, distorted guitar leads. It's an often epic album, exemplified by the opening track, "Brand New World," which starts off like a lament and ends with a triumph of surging strings. Atop it all sits singer Margo Timmins. She's the lover everyone wants, a voice that is at once world-weary and inviting, domineering and seductive. She's the perfect vehicle for writer and brother Michael Timmins--especially on an album that deals with adult themes--because if nothing else, Margo sounds like an adult, a woman who has experienced the world and life and things that maybe we shouldn't talk about. A mother's frustration never sounded as ominous and threatening as on "Cutting Board Blues." Sitting astride a buzzsaw guitar riff and a groove of doom, she talks about walking away from it all, leaving her cutting board behind. Many of the themes concern adulthood and children with a sense of despair about the world those children are entering on songs like "My Little Basquiat." There are moments of light and hope on At the End of Paths Taken, but overall it is a deliriously dark and brooding album. --John Diliberto |

Steven Spielberg's alien abduction opus Taken is what happens when you cross-breed Close Encounters of the Third Kind with The Waltons. Obviously flushed with the success of the TV miniseries Band of Brothers, Spielberg's Dreamworks studio has created an equally epic 10-part story chronicling 50 years of habitual abduction over several generations of three American families. Beginning with the most notorious alien cover-up in U.S. history, the 1947 "crash" at Roswell, New Mexico, Taken introduces the "Greys" and the families they routinely abduct, probe, and, in a couple of cases, impregnate over the course of the ten 90-minute episodes. The three families are: the Keys, from which first Russell, then his son Jessie, then grandson Danny, are all abducted; the Clarkes, who are descended from a liaison between lonely put-upon housewife Sally Clarke and one of the Roswell crash survivors; and the Crawfords, the ruthless G-men who are committed to uncovering the purpose behind the alien visitations at any cost. It's this question that forms the main thread of the story: but even though the Greys' actions are at best ambiguous and at worst hostile, the viewer can't help feeling that after all this systematic abuse of their human test subjects the aliens will in the end present them with a cure for cancer. In fact, Taken is Spielberg at his most touchy-feely: for all its science fiction trappings it's basically a soap opera, lacking the sinister undercurrent of either Dark Skies or The X-Files. Nevertheless, it's an engaging series with decent performances--most notably Joel Gretsch as psychotic Owen Crawford--good special effects, and an engaging enough storyline to make it entertaining, if somewhat disposable, TV. --Kristen Bowditch |

Dibencozide is an active oral form of B-12. Dibencozide can be effective taken orally and is retained in body tissues to a greater degree than regular B-12.
How important is B12?
* Vitamin B12 is essential for normal metabolism in all cells especially those of the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, and nervous system.
* Individuals with pernicious anemia develop vitamin B12 deficiency rapidly, in approximately 1-3 years, compared with those whose vitamin B12 deficiency stems from other causes.
* The mean age at diagnosis of pernicious anemia is 60 years old. The prevalence rates for women are higher than for men.Absorption of protein-bound vitamin B12 decreases with age or deficiency of iron or folic acid, and increases during pregnancy.
* The body stores 2000 to 5000 mcg, primarily in the liver and kidneys, and excesses are excreted by way of kidney or in bile.
* Infants with vitamin B12 deficiency demonstrate a failure to thrive, marked developmental regression and poor brain growth.
* Stomach acid is needed for vitamin B12 in food to be absorbed. H2 blockers and protein pump inhibitors (PPI) reduce stomach acid and therefore interfere with absorption of vitamin B12 naturally present in food. On the other hand, vitamin B12 found in supplements is available for the body to absorb without hydrochloric acid. Therefore, persons taking H2 blockers or PPIs may need to supplement vitamin B12 to prevent deficiency.
* Atrophic gastritis with decreased pepsin production is prevalent in the elderly. Consequently, absorption of food-bound vitamin B12 is lower in older than in younger, healthier people.
* Alcohol reduces the absorption of dietary cobalamin. In addition, it can interfere with storage of vitamin B12 in the body. Daily vitamin B12 supplements could prevent deficiency for people who consume excessive alcohol.
* Since the primary sources of vitamin B12 in the diet are animal products, vegetarians have a high risk of developing B12 deficiency. |
