During the "Swinging Sixties," London and San Francisco were not the only epicenters of youthful rebellion, psychedelia, and free love. Although initially stunned at losing their centuries-old monopoly on style--and to the Brits of all people--French fashionistas and pop stars embraced the zeitgeist in their own inimitable way. Johnny Hallyday's version of Billy Joe Royal's "Hush," Marie Laforet's take on the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," Eileen's sultry interpretation of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walking," and Frank Alamo's treatment of the Turtles' "Happy Together" are at once startling, goofy and touching, but then, so were the originals. Among the home-grown tunes, France Gall's "Dady Da Da" and Serge Gainsbourg's "Marilu" share a tinny-sounding charm typical of the period. Each track recalls a time when sexuality was uninhibited but not salacious and packs of mod-attired boys and girls sashayed through the Latin Quarter looking for fun. --Christina Roden |

In Chaplin's first production for United Artists, (writer, producer, director and actor) the comedian only appears in an unrecognizable cameo as a porter lugging a trunk in this drama that features Edna Purviance. As Chaplin's leading lady Purviance made almost forty films with the comedian from 1915 to 1926 and with this dramatic effort he was trying to make her a bankable star independent of his comedies.
A WOMAN OF PARIS (Released September 26, 1923) is the story of Marie St. Clair (Purviance), a girl from a small French town who plans on eloping to Paris with her lover, Jean (Carl Miller), a would-be artist. Her father disapproves and when Jean leaves her at the train station, Marie ends up in Paris by herself and becomes the mistress of the wealthy Pierre Revel (Adolphe Menjou). In time, Marie runs into Jean again, and is forced to choose between money and love. The fact that there is sin on the one side and the sanctity of marriage comes into play because "A Woman of Paris" is ultimately pure melodrama, beautifully photographed by Roland Totheroh.
SUNNYSIDE (Released June 15, 1919) was one of the comedies that Chaplin made for First National Pictures, the studio he signed with after his happiest days at Mutual. However, this was the least of those efforts, probably because Chaplin rushed to get it out. Having developed his own way of creating his comedic masterpieces, being under the gun was rather unproductive. The story begins with the Tramp working as a handyman on a farm, where he develops a crush on the pretty girl next door (Purviance). Unfortunately, his Boss (Tom Wilson) is out to work him to death, and then we get to an extended fantasy sequence with lots of nymphs.
A soundtrack for both features composed by Charles Chaplin himself was added in 1976 and a full orchesteral performance is featured on this tape. |
From the director of The Fluffer comes this witty, erotic spoof of the Japanese Ringu movies starring Jason Adonis, Tag Eriksson and Josh Hammer. The film begins with two young men hearing the legend of a video tape that when watched will turn the viewer gay in seven days. It turns out that some of the local boys have already seen the tape and have begun idolizing Judy Garland and watching women's television! They try watching straight porn to no avail; these boys have "gone gay." It's then that a journalist arrives to investigate the phenomenon and he watches the tape. He tries desperately to save himself from "the Curse" as the seven days go by. |

In John Guare's classic play The House of Blue Leaves (winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play), the Pope is visiting New York, and eighteen-year-old Ronnie goes AWOL from the army to come home to New York and blow up the Pope as he passes his house. In his new play, Chaucer in Rome, it is the year 2000, and Ron and his wife come to Rome to search for their son. And with his inimitable wit and understanding, Guare has written a scathingly funny satire on the warping hunger for fame, and the betrayal involved in creating art. |
