The script for this movie was written by outrageous poet-author-alcoholic Charles Bukowski. But director Barbet Schroeder makes it into an oddly amusing story of a pugnacious drunk writer (Mickey Rourke) based on Bukowski himself. Rourke spends almost all of his time at the bar, struggling with sobriety (he's against it) and, occasionally, having fistfights with the bartender (Frank Stallone). He meets another souse, a formerly attractive woman (Faye Dunaway), and gets involved with her, which means they drink copious amounts of liquor and try to have sex. Not much happens beyond that, yet this film is strangely entertaining, for all of its bottom-of-the-barrel humanity. Maybe that's the secret: "Oh, the humanity...." --Marshall Fine![]() Tags : Barfly

That Oscar-winning title song buzzes in your ears long after the movie has stopped. The attraction here is youthful spirit and a pulsating score, because the weak story is merely a conduit for the song-and-dance numbers. The plot is every young woman's daydream come true. Jennifer Beals holds down a macho job as a welder by day, but performs erotic dance numbers in a club at night. It's not a strip club, so her morality remains intact. She dates her wealthy boss (Michael Nouri) and practices hard for the day she can audition for the upscale, local dance school, even though she has no formal training. It is malarkey, of course, unless you view this as total romantic fantasy. It works because you are carried along by the sheer force of the energetic, boisterous, MTV-style imagery by director Adrian Lyne. Beals is a plus as the stubborn, pouty, somewhat eccentric young woman made all the more interesting for her driving ambition. In the end, she is aided by her Prince Charming, who arrives bearing favors. Mind you, this is not the same as a rescue, as Beals is one rather tough damsel who does just fine on her own. --Rochelle O'Gorman ![]() Tags : Flashdance

Fred Astaire plays a fashion photographer based on real-life cameraman Richard Avedon, in this entertaining musical directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain). The story finds Astaire's character turning Audrey Hepburn into a chic Paris model--not a tough premise to buy, especially within this film's air of enchantment and surrounded by a great Gershwin score. Based on an unproduced play, this is one of the best films from the latter part of Astaire's career. --Tom Keogh |

This stupendous two-CD, 13-track release by tenor/soprano saxophonist Tim Ries an extraordinary jazz musician and member of the Rolling Stones touring band since 1999 translates the Stones immortal songbook into ingenious and uncharted jazz-influenced, world music territories, with Stones members Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts, along with salsa/Latin pianist Eddie Palmieri, jazz drum giant Jack DeJohnette, the Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura, vocalists Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer, and the Brazilian superstar, Milton Nascimento.A well-rounded artist who has worked with everybody from Sheryl Crow and Steely Dan to Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon, Ries has released four critically acclaimed jazz records as a leader. This effort is Ries s long-anticipated follow-up to his 2005 Concord release, The Rolling Stones Project, which offered a more jazzed take on the Stones music, and featured Norah Jones. But while the jazz influence is evident on this project, the vibe reflects a more global-centric take, born from Ries s world tours with the band. My goal became clear: to record with local musicians, in the style particular to the region, in each of the various countries where the world tour took us... Ries writes in the liner notes. I set the music in the various world music styles, but the arrangements were only a guide for the exceptional musicians involved in each situation. Ries sinewy and soaring sax lines and Wide World arrangements swing and sing in a marvelous multitude of tones and tongues, supported by vocalists Bernard Fowler, Lisa Fischer, organist Larry Goldings, drummers Clarence Penn and Gregory Hutchinson, bassist John Patitucci and guitarist Ben Monder. Save for the leader s lone original track, the Crusaders-colored A Funky Number, with the incredible Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino, the rest of the selections are all Stones classics: Baby Break It Down, is a Tokyo-toned take with vocalist Minako Yoshida. Miss You and Fool to Cry, are Parisian-pulsed waltz and accordion-featured tracks driven by Watts sensitive drumming and French pianist Franck Amsallem, contrasted by Jack DeJohnette s New York-nuanced drums and Bill Frisell s twangy guitar lines on You Can t Always Get What You Want. Brown Sugar, and No Expectations are rendered as passionate Portuguese fado songs sung by fadista Ana Moura, matched by the gospelized/flamenco fury of Jumpin Jack Flash with dancer Sara Baras, while the Iberian impressionism takes on a Puerto Rican salsa sizzle on Under My Thumb, powered by Eddie Palmieri s propulsive piano solo, matched by Milton Nascimento s passionate Afro-Brazilian look at Lady Jane. On the other side of the globe, Indian tabla master Badal Roy provides the sub-continental syncopations on the fusion-friendly Angie. The North African, blues-Berber beat on Hey Negrita, with the Tuareg band Tidwat, is laced with Mick Jagger s down-home harmonica and Ronnie Wood s smoking guitar solos. Salt of the Earth is an all-embracing selection that draws from America, Asia, and Africa, with Ries daughter Jasia on vocals and rapper, Fe. All of Tim Ries powers are evident in this amazing recording; a well-traveled CD that rocks and rolls with global grooves. Every major religion, race, and ideology is represented on these tracks, Ries writes in the liner notes. ... Like children, we instinctively go to that natural place when boundaries are obscured by the magic of the moment. |
Avishai Cohen, one of the most innovative bassists and composers today, will release Gently Disturbed, his first release with his newly configured trio, from May on his own Razdaz Recordz label. While to outward appearances the trio would seem to be the standard piano-bass-drum formula, the music they've created on Gently Disturbed is far from the standard jazz trio repertoire. Featuring nine original compositions (written either by Cohen or by the trio collaboratively), including one traditional Israeli song, Gently Disturbed is an amalgamation of melody and groove, complexity and simplicity that nearly redefines the concept of jazz. With the departure of long-time pianist Sam Barsh, Cohen has slightly reconfigured his trio with the addition of Israeli pianist Shai Maestro. Since Cohen is an accomplished pianist in his own right and has performed on bass with such acclaimed jazz pianists as Danilo Perez, Brad Mehldau and of course Chick Corea, and because the previous keyboard players in his bands (Sam Barsh and Jason Lindner) have been exceptional, it is even more striking to note that Maestro is just 21 years old. Rounding out the trio is the brilliant Mark Guiliana on drums, who has been playing and touring with Cohen since 2003 and who Modern Drummer Readers Poll 2007 cited as "one of the best up-and-coming stars of today's drumming scene." Cohen's releases on Razdaz, which he founded with manager Ray Jefford in 2003, have consistently earned critical approbation, beginning with 2003's Lyla, followed by At Home in 2005, and through to 2006's critically acclaimed Continuo then followed by last year's Double Live CD/DVD release, As Is.Live At The Blue Note (Razdaz / Half Note). |
Imagine a pianist with Thelonious Monk s angularity, Cecil Taylor s force, and Andrew Hill s genius, coupled with a profound compositional mind that extends, elevates, and elaborates on the traditions of jazz, world, and Indian music, and you ll get Vijay Iyer, the most critically acclaimed improvisationally oriented artist of this young century. Named the # 1 Rising Star Jazz Artist of the Year and the # 1 Rising Star Composer of the Year in Down Beat magazine s 2006 and 2007 International Critics Poll, this sensational South Asian/American pianist/composer/author/educator has performed and recorded with an impressive roster of stars, from Steve Coleman and John Zorn, to poet Amiri Baraka and the rap duo dead prez, and has presented a number of astonishing CDs as a leader and co-leader. Any artist blessed with such far-reaching gifts will have something to say. And on Tragicomic, his Sunnyside debut, Iyer delivers a stupendous sonic commentary on our contemporary world. With him is his fabulous quartet, featuring alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, bassist Stephan Crump, and drummer Marcus Gilmore, the grandson of the legendary drum giant Roy Haynes. This twelve-track recording is the augmented version of a previous piece of the same name commissioned by Chamber Music America. Cornel West decodes the blues aesthetic as a tragicomic sensibility stemming from a sustained encounter with arguably history's greatest, cruelest absurdity the kind in which even ultimate purpose and objective order are called into question ... Iyer writes in the CD s liner notes. In our perilous moment of global transition, we have everything to learn from this sensibility. A tragicomic outlook can ease our pains of metamorphosis and help us dream the next phase into being. That's how and why this music was made. Iyer s music mirrors the complex political, economic, religious and social challenges in today s world, which results in a kind of quantum jazz: a poly-tempoed approach, where two listeners can hear two different time signatures at the same point in a composition. The Coltrane-coded The Weight of Things and Becoming open and close the CD. The four selections from the commissioned work include the florid, Aftermath, the dark, algorhythmic Without Lions, the metronomic, avant-rock number Machine Days and the foreboding Threnody. Other tracks include the introspective Mehndi, contrasted by the mockingly frenetic Macaca Please, which refers to an ethnic slur uttered a couple of years ago by a Virginia senator. The para-reggae pulsations of Bud Powell's Comin' Up is the first of four trio selections (minus Mahanthappa), followed by Window Text and Age of Everything, which swing with syncopations that stretch from South America to the subcontinent. The waltzy I m All Smiles - the CD s only solo piano selection - highlights Iyer s expansive command of the jazz piano tradition. Tags : Tragicomic
