Drummer Dave Weckl gained such a cultlike following playing with Chick Corea's Elektric and Akoustic bands in the 1980s that he could probably release an album of solo wood-block tapping and have it sell enough copies to make the effort worthwhile. So it's a pleasant surprise that Synergy is a decidedly group effort that thrusts the varied compositional talents and versatility of Weckl and his bandmates to the forefront instead of merely showcasing the leader's drum chops. Not that Weckl has been letting those chops sag; his solo percussion odyssey "Cultural Concurrence" and his ferocious soloing over the Latin groove of the title track are enough to give air drummers everywhere a workout. But what makes Synergy more listenable than some of Weckl's other efforts is the inspired group interplay that finds him and his longtime touring ensemble--saxophonist Brandon Fields, keyboardist Jay Oliver, guitarist Buzz Feiten, and bassist Tommy Kennedy--locking in on grooves that push beyond his normal jazz-fusion terrain. From the West African feel of "High Life" to the Cajun-tinged "Swamp Thing" to the swanky James Brown funk of "Wet Skin," Synergy is an inspired and varied outing. --Ezra GaleTags : Synergy

Relaxation is key in Denise Austin: Stretch and Flex. This 30- minute session stages a calming and restorative routine of limbering and lengthening poses that have the possibility of relaxing both body and mind. Austin presents this class in a low-key manner, using a soft voice to deliver informative directional cues. Participants familiar with yoga will find a comfortable cross-section of yoga postures throughout this format. A broad range of people can enjoy the dual benefit and applicability of this exercise style because it is slow and safe (yet effective). All major muscles of the body are given attention through overhead extensions of the arms, deep lunges, and forward bends. Transitions from pose to pose are exact and fluid, without being overly challenging or ineffective. New age music plays in the background and a peaceful aura exudes from the light-colored surroundings on the set. This video offers increased flexibility and muscle elasticity, which can speed metabolism and stave off exercise-induced injuries to tendons and joints. A light warm-up (for example, a 10-minute walk) would complement this class well, allowing participants to hold stretches longer and move deeper into each pose. Overall Denise Austin: Stretch and Flex would be a welcome accompaniment to any fitness regimen because of the terrific attention to safety. --Olivia Voigts |
Four of Jane Fonda's instructors take turns presenting an energetic 45-minute, moderate-intensity step workout. The frequent switching of instructors adds variety and interest, and the different teaching styles keep the workout feeling fresh. The choreography starts out very simple, and as the workout progresses, so do the moves, although the patterns never get terribly complicated. Each pattern is taught clearly, practicing the base moves before adding on arms, styling, or intensity. The cueing is excellent. Occasionally one of the participants demonstrates lower-intensity modifications in case you get tired or need to adapt a move for your fitness level; another shows how to raise the intensity for more experienced steppers. After the step workout, Fonda herself leads a relaxing 15-minute stretch--no extreme flexibility required. She repeats stretches, because you can take a stretch deeper if you do it more than once. This is an excellent tape for an intermediate exerciser with some step experience who wants an effective, enjoyable workout and a nice, long stretch. --Joan Price |

STRETCHWARE is software that reminds you to stretch while working at the computer, based on Bob Anderson's classic fitness book STRETCHING (4 million copies in 29 languages). If you work at a computer, there is a good chance you will eventually suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, along with back pain, stiff muscles, tight joints, tension and stress. Every day millions of workers feel the aches and pains brought on by long hours while sitting at a desk using a computer.
Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) have risen 80% since 1990, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And while ergonomics are essential in the workplace, our bodies still suffer from long periods of sitting and inactivity.
To address and combat the growing problem of workplace injuries, OSHA has recommended taking stretching breaks - a simple activity that can make you feel better. However, most people will not make the time to take a stretching break - they need to be reminded to stretch.
STRETCHWARE can be tailored to meet each individual's work situation and personal requirements. Users set up the software to remind them to stretch with a sound (such as Tibetan bell, clock, or harp), a flashing icon on the computer screen and/or a window that appears throughout the day.
Preferences are also set to determine how often the user wants to be reminded to stretch (for example, every hour, half hour, or 20 minutes; after a set number of keystrokes; or at a certain hour of the day).
It's easy to use STRETCHWARE. Installation takes just a few minutes. Set your preferences and you are ready to stretch! There are 14 different stretching routines, each for a different situation.
Stretching routines include several different individual stretches and take a total of about one minute to complete. Instructions for doing each stretch pop up when you roll your mouse over that stretch.
Take a stretching break - you'll feel better! |
