Aching with loves both lost and leaving, it's a voice that producer Garrett Lee uses as a jumping-off point, dropping fat guitars, electronic noise, and eclectic instrumentation in with Lightbody's breathy, moody depth. The band plays around with wild shifts of texture: "Gleaming Auction" veers in seconds from a relaxed shuffle to a shoegazing crunch, while a blanket of fuzzbox swagger calls forth the ghost of T. Rex on "Tiny Little Fractures." But just when you're ready to throw the record on random shuffle with Electric Warrior or maybe Heaven Tonight, the band lays down a pastoral ballad like "Same." Berkeley's new album: Strange Light was produced by Brian Deck (Iron and Wine, Josh Ritter, Modest Mouse, Counting Crows). It features background vocals by the lovely Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek and bass by Ani DiFranco's bassist Todd Sickafoose, as well as mandolins by Mindy Smith's mandolinist Lex Price. This is Berkeley's 4th release. His first 2 studio albums (The Confluence and After the Wrecking Ships) as well as Live From Fez (Berkeley's final concert complete with DVD at the legendary New York listening room) are all available here and through cdbaby and itunes. A Brooklyn native, David Berkeley now lives in the Corsican mountain village (pop. 37) of Tralonca. Though the polyphonic chanting of the Corsican shepherds has yet to find its way into his songs, the influence of the goat bells, crumbling walls and big skies certainly have. For fans of Ryan Adams, Gary Jules, Beck, Damien Rice, David Gray...you may have found a new staple. |

Check out two numbers danced by the late, underused, and underrated Carol Haney, who performs amazing feats for "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway." As the popular comedy-adventure One Piece continues, Monkey D. Luffy must face some immediate problems before he can pursue his dream of becoming King of the Pirates. Based on a little-known British novel, the film casts Dustin Hoffman as a bookish American mathematician on sabbatical in rural England, in the town where his young bride (Susan George) grew up. He finds himself forced to defend his home against an assault by local toughs, and discovers a frighteningly feral and vicious side to himself. Though Straw Dogs has a reputation for graphic violence, it actually looks tame by contemporary standards.
