Here's a laser level perfect for the homeowner or contractor who's hanging cabinets or shelving, installing suspended ceiling or flooring or just hanging artwork. It's compact, inexpensive and reliable. Strait-Line's 60-foot laser line can mark a 120-foot work area by swiveling the laser, and it's accurate to +/- 3/16" at 20 feet. Best of all, it leaves not a mark on your surface, unlike other laser levels we've seen that have pins on the back. Instead, just peel the strip of 3M Command Adhesive (be sure to affix the correct side to each surface) and place the level. For a horizontal line, just turn the unit until the bubble in the horizontal level is between the two lines. For a vertical line, keep your eye on the vertical level's bubble. Lengthening the line is a snap, accomplished just by changing the tilt angle on the mounting base up to 4 degrees. At its full length, the line isn't as bright as when it's projecting just a few feet, but even so, it's bright enough to work from. Hanging a wall border around a corner? No problem: The laser will round the bend for you. It's slick, fast, easy and fun. Our only complaints: It only comes with four Command Adhesive strips (so stock up) and the two AA batteries are not included. Other than that, it's a great little tool.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste |

Well into his third decade at the top, album # 37 for George Strait maintains the consistency and high quality that's marked the vast majority of his work from the start. Like Alan Jackson, he's has always been more comfortable in conventional country fiddle and steel guitar settings, and that's largely where he remains with Troubadour. Even the good-natured, Caribbean feel of "River of Love" is closer to vintage Strait than Jimmy Buffett. The more somber "House of Cash" is a duet with Patty Loveless. It tells the story of the tragic, 2007 fire that took the home of Johnny Cash, and reflects on what could not be obliterated by the flames. Strait reverts to classic, Lone Star State form with "Make Her Fall With Me Song," a honky tonk shuffle in the style of Ray Price or George Jones, while the gorgeous western swing-driven "That West Texas Town" is a duet with Dean Dillon. With Troubadour Strait avoids surprises, if only by virtue of his continuing skill working wonders within a time-honored style. --Rich KienzleTags : Troubadour

When George Strait's "She'll Leave You With a Smile" moved to the top of the country charts in early 2003, the handsome Lone Star crooner bested Conway Twitty for the most No. 1 singles by a solo artist. This collection of 50 chart-toppers, spanning 22 years, showcases the Cadillac of country singers at his best, blending traditional and contemporary stylings, but never straying too far from the core of his Texas barroom sound. "Fool Hearted Memory," from 1982, proves that Strait had his uncluttered production and straightforward vocal approach down from the start, no matter how many producers guided him to his peak. Through the years, the path to superstardom dictated that he trade the crisp Western swing of "Right or Wrong" and "Ace in the Hole" for squishy, mid-tempo crowd pleasers like "Check Yes or No" and "Write This Down." But he redeemed himself with such poignant heartbreakers as "So Much Like My Dad" and "
Smile." This retrospective's one new track, "I Hate Everything," about a man in a bar who's besotted more from pain than whiskey, doesn't match up with the singer's best material, but it's still got that irresistible Strait hook: average-guy sincerity wrapped in a down-to-earth heart. --Alanna Nash |
"The King of Country Music" George Strait will brighten this year's holiday season with his album, Classic Christmas, to be released October 7. The album's ten traditional holiday songs are Strait's personal favorites and they were recorded with the Texas Troubadour's own country flare. Songs on the CD include the Christmas anthem "We Three Kings," the playful "Up on the Housetop," and enduring classics such as "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing," "Deck the Halls," "O Come, All Ye Faithful," and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," among others. |
The Florida Straits form that sector through which Cuban expatriates flee toward the United States. Major Carlos Jayne (Raul Julia) is depicted as one of a group released from a Cuban prison after 20 years for taking part in the Bay of Pigs catastrophe, all members of which are being welcomed by family, except for the mysterious Jayne. The other featured players are introduced through the gambit of a high-stakes poker game, observed by Jayne, wherein Mac (Daniel Jenkins) wins half of a charter fishing boat owned by Lucky (Fred Ward), and soon Jayne has cooked up a plan whereby the three will return to Cuba for prizes: a lost love for Jayne, and a fortune in gold hidden in the jungles of Cuba for the others. A glorious exploit beckons to the trio but they soon discover many obstacles to the success of their expedition, including Fidel Castro's military forces, hostile guerrillas and mercenaries, and harsh jungle terrain. Director Mike Hodges and cinematographer Dennis Lewiston are quite originative at times, the tuneful thematic score by Michel Colombier is appropriate and the costume design under the aegis of Moss Mabry is very fine. |
Strait-Line's claim that this is "the most capable laser level ever built" is an invitation to skepticism, but folks, after spending a little time with this model, we think it's true. Yes, there are other laser levels on the market that project both a horizontal and vertical line, but we've never seen one that lets you access the exact point of intersection-this one does, so every job gets off to a flawless start. And flawless it is, because the Intersect self-levels within 8 degrees on a vertical surface. All you have to do is attach it to the wall (more on that in a minute) as close to vertical as you can, and Strait-Line's amazing technology projects perfectly level and plumb lines with zero guesswork for a 30 foot total horizontally and 20 feet vertically. (We'll do the math for you: That's a 600 square foot work area.) Mind you, the auto-leveling feature works on a vertical surface only, but use on the floor doesn't require leveling anyway. Another feature to love is that it leaves no marks on the wall; there are no pins to push in. Instead, Strait-Line has incorporated 3M's revolutionary Command Adhesive. Just peel, stick and remove the whole shebang when you're done, without a trace. Accuracy is outstanding, to within +/- 1/8 inch at 15 feet. This is a great tool for just about anybody, from contractors and cabinet installers to art galleries, builders, home decorators and of course, the intrepid do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste |

The German battleship Bismarck is one of the most famous warships of the Second World War. The lead ship of her class and named after the 19th century German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Bismarck displaced more than 50,000 tons fully loaded and was the largest warship then commissioned. Her chief claim to fame came from the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941 during which the battlecruiser HMS Hood, flagship of the Home Fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, was sunk within several minutes. In response, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the order to "Sink the Bismarck",[2] spurring a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy. Two days later, with safer waters almost in reach, Fleet Air Arm aircraft torpedoed Bismarck and jammed her rudder, allowing heavy British units to catch up with her. In the ensuing battle on the morning of 27 May 1941, Bismarck took heavy punishment for nearly three hours before sinking. |
Jacks career as a practicing professional artist spans a period of over thirty-five years, both as a commercial artist and a fine art painter. His intense interest in the history of the air war in the Pacific led to his origination of the Cactus Air Force Art Project, dedicated to the collecting and archiving of historical data relating to that period. Most of his work today illustrates military aviation in the Pacific. Jack is, in my opinion, the foremost artist in the world doing Pacific WWII aviation art."...Larry J. Hickey, Pres. Thoroughly revised and updated, the fourth edition of this successful text offers a wealth of new research examples and references, accessible diagrams of essential concepts and processes, and extended coverage of core methods and recent developments. Striking a balance between specific techniques and the underlying logic of scientific inquiry, Approaches to Social Research, Fourth Edition, provides a lucid treatment of the four major approaches to research--experimentation, survey research, field research, and the use of available data. While advocating a multiple-methods strategy that treats these approaches as complementary rather than mutually exclusive, the book contains a detailed account of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Opening chapters draw students into the subject by illustrating the practicality of the study of research methods and outlining the scientific foundations of social research. The text then follows a typical research project, beginning with research design, measurement, and sampling. It proceeds with data collection and concludes with data processing and analysis. This fourth edition includes new and revised chapters that address the role of emerging technologies and the Internet in social research. Extensively updated research examples and a clear exposition make complex issues accessible to students with no background in social research. Approaches to Social Research, Fourth Edition, is an ideal textbook for graduates and advanced undergraduates in the social sciences, and it also provides important guidance for researchers in sociology and related disciplines. |
