So, was Larry Fine really the Keith Richards of the Three Stooges? That's just one of the weighty assertions put forth in this thoughtful bio of the world's greatest troupe of slapstick comedians. Aside from lovingly edited "greatest hits" moments, this A&E production also contains hardcore Stooge material documenting the troupe's early years (under the name Ted Healy and his Stooges), as well as detailing the ever-changing Stooge membership. The video is impressive not only for its breadth of coverage, but also for its depth. Viewers are treated to an ultra-rare glimpse of the early Stooges performing on vaudeville as well as poignant home movies of an aged Curly. But it's not all sugary praise and heart-tugging remembrance; the video points out that the Stooges appropriated much of their act from other performers and, during the early part of the career, weren't really all that popular. Overall, The Three Stooges is a compelling work that puts a touchingly human face on characters most think of as simple, pie-throwing clowns. --S. Duda |
"Listen, Judge" (1952, short number 138 in the Columbia series) uses for the nth time the scenario of a judge dismissing a case only to find the same person(s) wrecking his home. Here a judge (Vernon Dent) finds the Stooges acting as cook, butler, and waiter who inevitably destroy his chances for reelection and his living room via a gas-filled birthday cake. There is the expected and no longer funny routine of "stuffing a turkey" with oyster shells, unopened cans, and so on. Again, it is the Stooges versus high society--and the former have nothing to lose."Bubble Trouble" (1953, number 151) should be titled "Remake Trouble." A good deal of footage is taken from 1947's "All Gummed Up," up to the point when the landlord (Emil Sitka) takes the boys' rejuvenation potion, and instead of shrinking as in the first version he turns into a gorilla to give us a different ending. It is a joy to see blonde Christine McIntyre finally get to do some Stooging herself, although the long "bubblegum on the cake" routine does outlive its humor. "Dunked in the Deep" (1949, number 119) would be pirated for a remake a few years later after Shemp's death and called "Commotion on the Ocean." Here a foreign spy puts some secret documents into watermelons (what they hold is of no concern) and has the three bring them to a ship on which they find they are stowaways. By now, Moe has taken on the Curly expression "Oh, a backbiter" while Shemp uses the very funny Curly slow walk across the set in the midst of an otherwise swift chase. Lack of any real plot calls for such fillers as Shemp trying to get into a hammock and the running gag of his being soaked each time he looks out a porthole. --Frank Behrens |
There is good Shemping in all three films in this entry in the Columbia series of Three Stooges shorts. "Dopey Dicks" (1949, short number 122) reruns some old Curly material (no surprise!) in which a mad scientist wants a brain for his evil experiments. Most of the footage is concerned with the boys being chased by the doctor and his evil assistant as they try to rescue Christine McIntyre and escape the blades aimed at their necks. Shemp's reactions are priceless and there is a lot of good fun here."Scrambled Brains" (1951, number 132) is said to have been among Shemp's favorites, and certainly what plot there is centers around his need to recover from a bout of hallucinations, all the while planning to marry an extremely ugly nurse he met while under treatment. The gem of this film is a new use of the old "third hand" routine that was a cliché even when Stan Laurel used it in A Chump at Oxford many years earlier. Emil Sitka gets to play a nearsighted doctor who, while inspecting Shemp, leans forward on his rocking chair to make a doll say "Mama" with the usual double takes from one and all. Shemp himself uses what looks like Sitka's glasses as an utterly incompetent dentist in "The Tooth Will Out (1951, number 134). Having barely passed a one-week course in dentistry, the boys go West to set up practice, and one almost feels the pain as half-blind Shemp stabs wildly at his first patient with a whirring drill. Possibly the idea--not very original to begin with--was influenced by Shemp's nearsighted explorer in the Abbott and Costello Africa Screams only a year or two before this short. --Frank Behrens |
