Insects can ruin a picnic or deck party in no time, so this electronic bug zapper helps keep the flying variety away at least. Protecting a full acre, the Stinger uses two methods to lure flying pests: a blue ultraviolet light from a 40-watt fluorescent bulb, and a chunk of "NOsquito" mosquito attractant that attaches directly to the underside of the 18-by-9-inch cylinder. As insects enter the cylinder's grid and hit the light, they are killed and fall to the ground through the open bottom. The grid prevents children's hands, birds, and butterflies from touching the bulb. For best results, the Stinger should be hung at least seven feet off the ground and about 25 feet away from where people will be gathering. A strong metal loop on top allows hanging from a branch or bracket, and the 10-inch integral power plug can be plugged into an outdoor extension cord. You'll want to encourage kids to get familiar with the controls before they try and any big-time stunt flights, since flying this choppers well takes practice. In addition to an on-off switch and a switch that lets you select the correct channel to control your helicopter, the hand-held controller has a throttle stick, a rudder stick, and a button to adjust for trimming. We found the best way to start off was flying in a large, indoor space, while focusing on hovering an even distance above the ground. This simple task is trickier to master than you might imagine, but with enough practice it will become second nature. The included instruction manual offers tips for learning to fly, from focusing on the helicopter instead of the controller to applying very gentle pressure on the control sticks. Fun, Imaginative Play for Expert Pilots This helicopters offers an excellent opportunity for parents and kids to play together. | The "stinger" is an alien bounty hunter that remains ominously hidden for most of the book, but appears to be an enormous wicked mixture of centipede and scorpion. The bounty it's after is the "good guy" of the tale--a waif-like being who invades the mind of a small girl to make its presence known. They both arrive in a hot, desolate West Texas town surrounded by the alkali dust and sagebrush of a flatland between mountains. And the battle begins. An unpretentious horror novel with memorable imagery, Stinger is this reviewer's favorite of Robert McCammon's. It has appealing characters. It has feuding motorcycle gangs. It even has a bit of a West Side Story romance between Anglo guy and Hispanic girl. Sure, it's a B-movie romp, but McCammon is earnest--he doesn't play it for laughs. The action is scary and horrifying, making for a long, satisfying read. |

| Stranded by a bizarre meteor impact and surrounded by monstrous mutations, rescue agent Eliot Ballade must unravel the mysteries of Dinosaur Island--or die trying. As Eliot or Dogs Bower, a ferry captain Eliot meets early in the game, you explore the island and uncover the story behind the disaster. While most of the game focuses on solving puzzles and learning more about the meteor and its effect on the island, roaming zombies and huge monsters will keep you on your toes. Graphics are good--with nice flashy weapons effects--but not mind-blowing like Soul Calibur or Sonic Adventure. The Jump Pack accessory (sold separately) provides great tactile feedback when firing weapons or getting mauled by a monster--it seems to spend more time rumbling than not. While the fighting is a lot of fun, some players may be frustrated by the regeneration of zombies. It can get tedious to exit a room after killing all of the enemies, only to run into them again when returning. The game's viewpoint system also could be improved, as it occasionally leaves you fighting an enemy you can't see. Parents should note that Blue Stinger is a horror game, and the gore flows readily. All in all, while it doesn't build any new genres, Blue Stinger provides a solid gaming experience.
