Willow Tree® hand-carved sculptures speak in quiet ways to heal, comfort, protect and inspire. Susan Lordi identifies emotions so important for us to convey, and renders them in simple, pure gestures. About Willow Tree®, Susan says, I try to keep the interpretation of Willow Tree® open. I hope this makes it more personal, and allows the viewer to decide its meaning. |
Willow Tree is an intimate, personal line of angels, figurines, ornaments and keepsake boxes representing qualities and sentiments that make us feel close to others, heal wounds, or treasure relationships to living things. The name Willow Tree symbolizes that which is gestural, beckoning and romantic. The figures are columnar in design, like a tree, and often carry flora or fauna symbolic of human virtues or qualities. The angels are rendered so as to reveal their expressions through body gestures only a tilt of the head, placement of the hands, a turn of the body. The absence of facial features contributes to the quiet and modest design. Emotions and feelings are left to the viewer to discern, which makes them very personal and powerful. Susan Lordi's inspiration comes from a love of family, closeness to friends, and an appreciation of nature. Her art is intimate and personal, reflecting that which helps us treasure our relationship to people and the world around us. |
Resplendent in voice and manner, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti deliver 21 songs of traditional sacred music and secular numbers in a remarkable 1999 live recording from the opulent Viennese concert hall (Konzerthaus), with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and a renowned choir. The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Only John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" doesn't quite work in this grand setting. --Martin Keller |
Christmas is the season for whipping out those holiday-specific standard recordings. This splendid gift by Chanticleer should top the list, for one will never tire of this a cappella choir's interpretations. With selections spanning the last five centuries of Latin, German, English, Spanish, and French festive fare, this recording exemplifies the sacrifice of the ego to the higher form of choral sound. Jacob Handl's "Mirabile Mysterium" takes you on a trip into the chromatic wonderlands, where you temporarily lose tonal balance. Victoria's eerie and dissonant "O Magnum Mysterium" treats us to rich voices swelling out of one organic whole. The phenomenal blend and perfect intonation elevate this recording above others in its category. --Barbara Eisner Bayer |
Mavis Staples, who marched and sang and protested alongside Dr. Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960 s, saw her steadfast dedication to equality and unwavering sense of hope validated on Tuesday, Nov. 4th 2008. She writes: "To come up in a time when there was slavery, racism, the KKK, and Jim Crow, I'm just so grateful to still be here to enjoy this historical time in our lives. It is so surreal, so completely overwhelming. This young black man has inspired and brought the country together. There's something about him that makes me feel he is the chosen one. There's something about his leadership that makes people feel calm and safe. He has inspired hopes and dreams of all people - black, white, brown or yellow. Doctor King and Pops I just know are so happy. "The Dream" is alive. Staples new record -- Mavis Staples Live: Hope At The Hideout, which also came out on Tuesday -- takes on a whole new significance in the wake of this historic win for equal rights. Recorded in June in an intimate bar in her hometown of Chicago, the record is filled with freedom songs like We Shall Not Be Moved and Down In Mississippi, gospel classics like Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and her biggest hit, I ll Take You There. Since the record was recorded in the uncertainty of the run-up to the election, it could, on one hand, be taken as another token to the struggle that Staples has devoted her career, and life, to. Yet in the wake of Tuesday s decision, the songs are suddenly a testament to the uplifting hope and certainty of success that has marked Staples work over the past 50+ years. On June 23, 2008 at Chicago's legendary roots club The Hideout, Staples played with a stripped down, raw, and swampy three-piece band and just a handful of backup singers, providing a rare opportunity for fans to get close to a figure who has led a five-decade long musical charge towards equality. This release comes off her critically lauded "We'll Never Turn Back", and is a potent mix of her classic civil rights freedom songs alongside some fiery new compositions co-written with producer Ry Cooder. Staples is a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, and has appeared with the likes of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bill Cosby, Presidents Kennedy, Carter, and Clinton, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, and Tom Petty. She's recorded with Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Marty Stuart, Los Lobos, and many more. In addition to her work in the trenches, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is also no stranger to political celebrations. Staples has performed at inaugural events for John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. |

Like a master calligrapher, Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog deploys his flute with an economy of line and texture. Music as Medicine is the latest offering from Khechog, who has recorded with synthesist Kitaro and Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and last year cocomposed the score to the acclaimed documentary Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion. On this album, he sets his flute up in gentle duets with Nakai and violinist Sandra Wong. Nawang and Nakai have been working together for years and their rapport is a study in nuance as they intertwine lines and play with space on "Harmony in Balance" and "Zen Blues." Music as Medicine is destined for your neighborhood yoga and massage studios, but listen a little deeper. Even though Khechog succumbs to pedestrian synthesizer pads on a few tracks like "Meditation," there's more here than soothing sounds and gentle ministrations. In a more innocent manner, Khechog is sculpting a profound psychological landscape similar to those of Stephan Micus and Meredith Monk. Like those artists, he has a sound that cuts directly to the source. --John Diliberto |

Place this paper-thin red plastic fish in the palm of your hand and its movements will indicate your romantic state. No one knows romance like a fish! As a unique and fun give-a-way I offer the Fortune Teller Fish to kids at birthday parties and to adults at cocktail receptions. Many adults recall these fish from their own childhood days and it's amusing to see grown adults toying with them. The fish is actually made of a space-age polymer plastic that is heat sensitive. When placed flat in a person's hand, their own body heat will cause the fish to wiggle and move like magic! DON'T TELL THEM THIS! Place the fish in another person's hand and explain that the fish has special powers and that the way that it twitches will predict their future. |
