Originally formed a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the a cappella group has reassembled and reemerged after their video for 'The 12 Days of Christmas' became a phenomenon with almost 8 million views on YouTube. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal- the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense...and with a sense of humor. |

Winner of Britain's "The X-Factor," Leona Lewis debuts with a mix of pop and R&B. She is blessed with a vocal range that's so versatile, in songs like "Better In Time," that one may immediately compare her to Mariah Carey or Beyoncé Knowles, especially in "The First Time I Ever Saw You." It's not Lewis's fault that her voice doesn't distinguish her from these stars, but her producer, Simon Cowell (American Idol), plays it safe, and doesn't add anything new to what Tommy Mottola achieved with Mariah decades ago. That's not to say that the album is bad, but let's just hope Leona Lewis's sophomore effort shakes things up a bit more. --Ernesto Sánchez (People en Español Tags : Spirit

Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China created the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. This classic text, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offered advice and guidance that was balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good. On this CD, for the very first time, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer takes you on a compelling journey through all 81 verses of the Tao, as he offers affirmations and a unique meditation technique that you can directly apply to your life. By actually repeating the word Tao as a mantra, you will subliminally attain a level of wisdom and peace that you may have never experienced before. Do the Tao now . . . and usher in an entirely new way of thinking!

The House of the Spirits is a generational tale of life among the ruling class in a South American country, as adapted from the Isabel Allende novel, but the political realities coexist very uneasily with the magical realism in this Bille August film. The star power alone (Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas, Vanessa Redgrave, and Armin Mueller-Stahl) should have cranked it up a few notches, but that's not the case. Irons is appropriately cruel as the ambitious man who achieves wealth and makes everyone around him miserable and Streep is luminous, but it's slow and ponderous all the way. --Marshall Fine |

While Tae-Bo master Billy Blanks is clearly inspired by his faith, his inspirational workout is really a Tae-Bo workout set to choir music. The spiritual portion of this 68-minute tape consists of a couple of two-minute segments in which Blanks tells how finding Jesus Christ helped him find his purpose. Which isn't to say it's not a good workout. With a roomful of people of all races and ages behind him, Blanks takes viewers through a 27-minute workout from stretching to roundhouse kicks and back down again. Viewers unfamiliar with Blank's trademark kickboxing workouts should heed the video box warning and head straight to the second half of the tape, in which he and three women demonstrate the techniques of Tae-Bo: throwing jabs, right crosses, left hooks, and upper cuts. If you can get past the sight of his assistant's impossibly defined abs, you'll learn which muscles to use and get the basic motions down. But don't try to use the demonstration as an actual workout because he only works one side of the body. When you're ready, hit the rewind button and try out your new skills on the inspirational workout while the background choir sings "Hallelujah, Thank You, Jesus." --Kimberly Heinrichs |

Weaving Native American mythology, music, dance, and rituals into a stage presentation augmented for television and home video, Spirit: A Journey in Dance, Drums, and Song suggests a New World counterpart to Riverdance, aimed at the same audience that made Bill Whelan's Celtic extravaganza a programming staple for PBS fund drives and a perennial seller in music and home video. Both projects also share substantial links to New Age music and mysticism. Buffett, who has focused on such a fusion in prior music, video, and multimedia projects, uses his core ensemble of synthesizers and conventional rhythm section to provide orchestral drama and sweep to the largely minor-keyed score. Native American flutes, percussion, and chant provide the music's evocative sense of identity, while Chief Hawk Pope's narration underlines the production's yearning for a simpler age of harmony with nature, while framing the dance sequences with various tribal legends. As directed and choreographed by Wayne Cilento, the pieces pointedly begin with an "Urban Overture" in which members of the troupe, dressed in suits, evoke the regimentation and discord of the modern world, punctuated with chirping cell phones, car horns, and mechanical rhythms. Gradually, group and lead dancers loosen up both visually and stylistically to convey more fluid movement. In addition to those members combining ballet and jazz movements with elements of tribal dance, Cilento employs vividly costumed Native American dancers, much as Buffett strategically deploys costumed native musicians and chorus. Extensive use of montage allows natural symbols and scenes to be grafted over the stage-bound elements of the 75-minute performance. Ethnomusicologists may regard this as something of a pastiche, but that's probably the point--Spirit is designed as a romantic, pan-tribal evocation of the continent's pre-European culture and beliefs. --Sam Sutherland |

Like a master calligrapher, Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog deploys his flute with an economy of line and texture. Music as Medicine is the latest offering from Khechog, who has recorded with synthesist Kitaro and Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai and last year cocomposed the score to the acclaimed documentary Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion. On this album, he sets his flute up in gentle duets with Nakai and violinist Sandra Wong. Nawang and Nakai have been working together for years and their rapport is a study in nuance as they intertwine lines and play with space on "Harmony in Balance" and "Zen Blues." Music as Medicine is destined for your neighborhood yoga and massage studios, but listen a little deeper. Even though Khechog succumbs to pedestrian synthesizer pads on a few tracks like "Meditation," there's more here than soothing sounds and gentle ministrations. In a more innocent manner, Khechog is sculpting a profound psychological landscape similar to those of Stephan Micus and Meredith Monk. Like those artists, he has a sound that cuts directly to the source. --John Diliberto |
