Thunder in the Skies History of Helicopters Sikorsky Sea King Boeing-Vertol Chinook Copters to the Rescue From the Aviation Archives of Corgi come two of the most famous helicopters in aviation history the Boeing-Vertol Chinook and the Sikorsky Sea King. Both are presented as Limited Editions in 1:72 scale, with all official logos and insignias. Sikorsky Sea King First tested in 1959, this anti-submarine helicopter was delivered to the U.S. Navy in 1962. It featured a watertight hull and outrigger floats for stability on water. It proved to be popular with navies worldwide and Sikorsky built 1100 Sea Kings, powered by twin GE T58-10 engines giving it a top speed of over 150 mph. During Viet Nam they were so successful in Search and Rescue operations they earned the nickname ôAngelö. Boeing-Vertol Chinook First developed in 1961; they served in Viet Nam as Flying Trucks of the U.S. Army. Britains Royal Air Force started purchasing them in 1978 and deployed 15 during the 1991 Gulf War. A medium lift copter with a 10,000 foot ceiling, it proved valuable for medical evacuations (it could hold 24 stretchers), fire fighting, and search and rescue besides its primary function of transport.
