Sycamore Meadows, the street where acclaimed musician Butch Walker lived and worked in Malibu, CA has drastically changed as a result of the massive wildfires that destroyed much of the area last November. And like many other Southern California residents, Walker lost his entire house and all his personal possessions in those fires, including his studio and every master recording he s ever made. But inspiration sometimes comes from tragedy and so it became that this event incited Butch Walker to create music unlike anything he had ever done before. The result is his fourth album entitled Sycamore Meadows. Always known to change up his musical styles, Butch Walker trades in his smart-glam, David Bowie-Marc Bolan sound heard on the previous solo album - The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let s Go Out Tonites (July 2006/Epic) - for a classic and introspective sound highlighting his poignant lyrics and unforgettable melodies. Walker wrote and produced the entire album, which ranges from the uptempo, anthemic jam that launches the album (first single The Weight of Her), to the deeply personal ballad Ships in a Bottle. |

Rush had already begun using electronics and synth in their music by the time Signals was released in 1982, so the synth-heavy opener, "Subdivisions" (a song that proves that high-school separatism is older than last year), wasn't that great a departure from their previous material. Signals also contains the single "New World Man," which still gets heavy radio airplay almost 20 years later, as well as groove-heavy, tech-savvy songs like "The Analog Kid" and "Digital Man"--prescient comments on the forthcoming information technology revolution if ever there were any. This was Rush's first studio album following Moving Pictures, which arguably remains their strongest and most well-known effort, after 2112. That's a tough act to follow, and Rush did it in the best possible way--by maintaining their distinctive sound while updating it with 1980s touches. Signals indicates that it was a good move. -- Genevieve WilliamsTags : Signals

Longwave's fourth album Secrets Are Sinister doesn't waste any time introducing the band's newly expanded sound. Opener 'Sirens In The Deep Sea' sets the stage with a brief, dueling jangle of chords before exploding into a cosmic crash of pounding drums, falsetto, and larger than life fuzzed out guitar. The band's trademark sound is all still there atmospheric, arena-sized guitars that build to an epic swell but now their penchant for dreamy landscapes gives way to an equally dynamic but louder, noisier, and more driving sensibility. Recorded predominantly by the band in their Brooklyn, NY studio (with help from producers Peter Katis and Dave Fridmann), Longwave returns from a three-year hiatus self-imposed though sparked by a series of unfortunate events with their most varied and strongest album to date. |

Based on a couple of short stories (from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven) by Sherman Alexie, Smoke Signals is a lean and assured feature that speaks well of its lengthy, rich evolution, including a development stint at Sundance. The first feature made by a Native American crew and creative team, the film concerns two young Idaho men with radically different memories of one Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), a former resident of the reservation who split years before and has just died in Phoenix. Arnold's strapping, popular son, Victor (Adam Beach), remembers him best as an alcoholic, occasionally abusive father who drove off one day and never came back. By contrast, Thomas Builds-the-Fire (Evan Adams), whom Arnold had saved from certain death years earlier, has chosen to exaggerate the man's life and deeds in a mythmaking fashion that drives Victor crazy. Circumstances bring the two together, however, in a bus ride to retrieve Arnold's ashes. There, in Phoenix, a confrontation with the reality of the dead man's fullest legacy has a profound effect on both characters. Alexie, who wrote the script and was personally involved in all aspects of the production, and first-time director Chris Eyre are so polished in their approach that you can barely feel the cinematic engine at work here. This is the kind of movie in which the characters seem to be driving everything forward, a captivating and pleasant experience that gets a little too tidy at the end (can we call a moratorium on scenes of human ashes lovingly disposed to the winds?), but which is undeniably moving. The cast, including Irene Bedard (the voice of and physical inspiration for Disney's Pocahontas) is outstanding. --Tom Keogh |

Convert wireless signals into powerline X10 signals. This multiple device RF base works with X10's line of RF remote controls and PIR motion sensors. Wireless X10 devices need this base unit to catch the radio signals and convert them to X10 signals on the electricity line. Add as many handheld remotes and X10 wireless devices as you want to each base. As long as the transmitters are on the same house code as the base, they will all control the same devices. Be careful to have only one RF base unit or X10 security console (which also change RF signals into X10 signals for the electricity line) per housecode. If more than one base unit is used on the same housecode, X10 signal collisions may result. The expandable RF Base includes a built-in appliance module which responds to unit codes 1 under the chosen house code. The appliance module can be controlled by wireless control or from another hardwired X10 transmitter. Like other Appliance Modules, it too is rated for 500 watts incandescent, 1/3 HP motor loads, and 15 amps resistive load (like a space heater.) |

Scientific research has found that the legendary benefits of pearls for promoting health, beauty and the reversal of aging come from unique substances called "signal proteins", which act as messengers by sending out signals that control cellular growth. Signal proteins from pearls can stimulate new skin and bone regeneration, as well as enhance skin tissue repair and increase existing bone density. Because of signal proteins, pearl powder can play a powerful role in the maintenance of youthful skin tone and promotion of vital skeletal and bone health. At age 25, collagen levels start declining at the rate of 1.5% a year. By age 40, your body has stopped manufacturing collagen altogether! Signal proteins stimulate collagen regeneration and new skin growth. Pearlcium has a proprietary, patent-pending process that preserves the integrity of the pearl and deliver the maximum health benefits. Studies show that many falls experienced by the elderly are caused by a hip or knee spontaneously fracturing just before the fall occurs. Signal proteins can support and encourage skin and tissue repair, help you to maintain a youthful skin tone and secure vital skeletal health through promoting and increasing solid bone density. WHY IS COLLAGEN SO IMPORTANT FOR YOU? Collagen holds your body together, and as the most abundant protein in the body, accounts for 85% of the skin, muscle and connective tissues. Collagen can assist your skin in becoming smoother by visibly reducing fine lines and wrinkles... your hair and nails may also become stronger. Would you like to look younger and lose extra body weight as well? Collagen preserves, builds and replenishes lean muscle mass, while encouraging your body to clear out fat at the same time. Pearl powder is the best and most bioavailable source of calcium. Contains proteins, 17 amino acids, polysaccharides and more than 30 essential trace minerals that can help you to have optimum body functioning, youthful beauty, happiness and longevity. |

How can you know when someone is bluffing? Paying attention? Genuinely interested? The answer, writes Sandy Pentland in Honest Signals, is that subtle patterns in how we interact with other people reveal our attitudes toward them. These unconscious social signals are not just a back channel or a complement to our conscious language; they form a separate communication network. Biologically based "honest signaling," evolved from ancient primate signaling mechanisms, offers an unmatched window into our intentions, goals, and values. If we understand this ancient channel of communication, Pentland claims, we can accurately predict the outcomes of situations ranging from job interviews to first dates.Pentland, an MIT professor, has used a specially designed digital sensor worn like an ID badge—a "sociometer"—to monitor and analyze the back-and-forth patterns of signaling among groups of people. He and his researchers found that this second channel of communication, revolving not around words but around social relations, profoundly influences major decisions in our lives—even though we are largely unaware of it. Pentland presents the scientific background necessary for understanding this form of communication, applies it to examples of group behavior in real organizations, and shows how by "reading" our social networks we can become more successful at pitching an idea, getting a job, or closing a deal. Using this "network intelligence" theory of social signaling, Pentland describes how we can harness the intelligence of our social network to become better managers, workers, and communicators. |
