Terence Fisher, who was to become Hammer Studios' top director with films such as The Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula, helmed this early low-budget programmer, a modest but inventive romantic drama with a science fiction twist. Best friends and partners Robin (John Van Eyssen) and Bill (Stephen Murray) both love their platinum blonde lab assistant and den mother Lena (Barbara Payton). When she marries Robin, Bill decides to use their invention, a matter duplicator, to replicate a Lena of his own, only the device works too well--the new Lena is also in love with Robin! Produced before Hammer made its reputation on lurid shocks and creative gore, Fisher walks a leisurely pace through this sober, straight-faced drama but doesn't skimp on the atmosphere. The boys' piecemeal lab whirs and flashes to life with every experiment, culminating in the white light of creation that bathes the lab in a heavenly glow. While it hardly compares to the taut science fiction thrillers created in the Quatermass films, it's a refreshingly smart bit of science fiction, more so for the questions asked than for the murky answers, and a serviceable if slight piece of drama.
