For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tilliešs Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli |

In 1927, two song and dance men, Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant, took four popular steps of the 1920's, strung them together and created the now legendary tap dance "The Shim Sham Shimmy." In February 1994, at age 87, Leonard created the Shim Sham II. To his utter joy, he has lived to see his dance become the official "National Anthem" of tap. If you've been tap dancing for years or are just putting on your first pair of tap shoes, you'll be able to learn the Shim Sham Shimmy. In the Introduction, you will see a demonstration of the dance by a group of talented and ageless (7-75!) tappers and hear an introduction by Leonard Reed himself. In the lesson, tap dancer and preservationist Rusty Frank breaks down the Shim Sham Shimmy, the Freeze Chorus and the Shim Sham II, using the same accessible methods she's used in hundreds of tap classes. The staggeringly athletic bodies of the two lead s are a constant source of visual spectacle in The Gymnast. Fortunately the movie also has a solid story to offer: Jane Hawkins (Dreya Weber Lovely and Amazing) has lost all pleasure in her life: Her gymnastics career collapsed twenty years earlier due to an injury her marriage has turned sour and her job as a massage therapist has become a rut. When she gets invited to put together an aerial act using long strips of cloth instead of trapezes Jane finds herself revitalized--and surprisingly drawn to her acrobatic partner Serena (dancer Addie Yungmee). The tentative romance between the two is sultry and thanks to their aerial routines visually captivating. The Gymnast occasionally stumbles with some obvious dialogue and unpolished acting moments but it's a strong coming-out story that gives texture and depth to its characters. The character's physical prowess ultimately becomes a metaphor for their emotional strength but the movie also serves as a celebration of female athleticism. Weber and Yungmee's bodies are assertively sexy expressing as much power as eroticism.
