Given this album's title and the fact that its "songs" include "We Wish You a Smelly Christmas," "Silent Butt Deadly Night" (a highlight), and "Auld Gas Syne," you may already know all you need to know--for better or for worse--in making a purchase decision. But this reviewer would like to attest that, while the humor herein may be far from highbrow, it can certainly liven up a dreary fall afternoon in the office. James Taylor's Live at the Beacon Theatre quickly became the demonstration DVD of choice for many high-end home-theater owners due to its gorgeous picture and pristine sound. It's a treat, then, that Taylor's second concert DVD, Pull Over (recorded in the summer of 2001 on the tour of that name), has those same qualities, with the added benefit of a widescreen picture, though it's not anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. Of course Taylor himself is as reliable as ever, showing no signs of age in his warm voice as he and a great band cover a number of songs from his then-unreleased October Road album as well as such favorites as "Carolina in My Mind," "Fire and Rain," "You've Got a Friend," "Your Smiling Face," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," and "Sweet Baby James." Pull Over is an outstanding concert DVD, but if it had beenn anamorphically enhanced, it might have laid claim to being one of the best ever. --David Horiuchi |
Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley |
