Opening the oven to check on a food's temperature means wasting the cook's time and losing oven temperature and moisture--not to mention a face full of steam. This thermometer prevents those problems. Insert the instrument's 6-inch stainless-steel probe into a roast beef or turkey and monitor the time and temperature (from 32 to 392 degrees F) on the thermometer's large digital display, which connects to the probe with a 4-foot cord. The control panel sets cooking time and temperature, and an alarm sounds when either is reached. Fully opened, the thermometer/timer is 5 inches high, but it folds flat for compact storage. If you think you know abdominal workouts, challenge yourself with this unusual video, based on yoga, classical dance, and the work of Joseph Pilates. "Strength and endurance, suppleness and flexibility," promises instructor Jennifer Kries. Every exercise starts from and focuses on the abdominals. Done lying on a mat, a 15-minute workout teaches you the basics of the exercises to come, demonstrating how to work your torso muscles in new ways, such as "roll-ups" and long leg circles. Then a 30-minute workout puts these exercises into a sequence and adds some more-advanced variations, such as sitting on your tailbone in a jackknife position--upper body and legs off the floor making a V-shape--and doing various movements from that position without losing your balance. This exercise technique gets the deep, postural abdominal muscles as well as those you're used to working. It also works the legs, hips, and buttocks, but the ab work is the best part. Kries gives clear, detailed instruction. She is so limber she could probably comb her hair with her toes, but don't be dismayed--you don't have to be that flexible to benefit from the workout. --Joan Price |
Jennifer Kreis's Precision Yoga presents an active and brisk set of yoga routines that strive for three sets of goals: strength and vitality, flexibility and range of movement, and serenity and peace of mind. Each set of goals is combined with a 20-minute routine of specific yoga exercises, which are culled from various "popular styles of yoga." Kreis works through traditional salutations and appears to make up some of her own as well. Her target audience will probably already be familiar with yoga since she offers only minimal instruction on achieving poses. Familiar poses, such as the triangle, mountain, child, and warrior poses, are included. Overall, her pace is a bit quick, though she does spend ample time discussing breathing, stressing its importance while stretching. Still, her rush through the relaxing "corpse pose" felt unnecessary--she could've devoted more production time to that important pose. Be prepared to hit the pause button if your pace is slower. Her style is more crisp and no-nonsense than the more Zen-like, languid Patricia Walden or Tracy Rich videos. Kreis also stresses the mind-body connection with affirmation-like statements at the beginning and end of the video. She reminds the viewer that yoga is ultimately a relaxing and balancing exercise, not a stretching competition. The video provides three routines, easily broken up or combined if time allows. Most likely designed to accompany her other Method videos, Precision Yoga can stand on its own as an acceptable basic yoga tape. --Gilia Angell |
This video presents two 15-minute workouts with an unusual approach that combines strength training, yoga, ballet, and the work of Joseph Pilates, concentrating on posture, abdominal strengthening, and balance. The best part is the postural and abdominal strengthening you'll get throughout the workout if you concentrate on the instructions. The first segment uses light weights for upper-body sculpting, with most of the work focusing on the shoulders. (The instructor claims you're working chest and arms, too, but because of the way you're holding the weights and the effect of gravity, the shoulder muscles are supporting the weights most of the time.) This might be an interesting cross-training activity if you're doing traditional strength training in addition, but it isn't as effective for upper-body strengthening as the standard weightlifting exercises you'll see in many videos. The second workout targets the legs, buttocks, and hips without weights, and here the workout shines. Kries has you stand upright, abdominals high and buttocks tight, doing slow leg lifts to different directions. This balance work is exceptionally effective to strengthen the torso and lower body.
