Kipper, a loveable, animated dog with a British accent, is on par with perennial preschool favorites Little Bear and Clifford, humble characters involved in ordinary play while reinforcing messages of cooperation, courtesy, and kindness. Drawn in simple lines with floppy ears, Kipper is the creation of England's Mick Inkpen, a prolific children's author (of Threadbear and Wibbly Pig fame) whose books have inspired a Nick Jr. television series. Pools, Parks and Picnics is a collection of seven episodes from the series, with straightforward names like "The Long Walk," "The Swimming Pool," and "The Picnic." The gentle tales are comfortably paced, accompanied by a soft instrumental soundtrack. In "The Gizmo," a bubble blower and a toy boat provide hours of entertainment for Kipper and his pal, Tiger, during an otherwise quiet day. In "Cakes and Tails," Pig agrees to share his triple chocolate cake with Kipper, until a game of hide-and-seek ends in a plateful of crumbs. A magnifying glass offers an up-close look at the wonders of nature in one episode; in another, a water fountain provides cool relief on a hot summer day. There are no crises and no moral dilemmas here. Rather, the sweet antics of childhood are mixed with the fun of friendship and the simplicity of play. Will the characters' British voiceovers play to young American audiences? Youngsters unfamiliar with the King's English may find the accents a bit distracting at first, yet, more likely, delightfully intriguing. (Ages 2 to 5) --Lynn Gibson |
When Warner Brothers was unable to secure the rights to Richard Preston's terrifying nonfiction book The Hot Zone (purchased by a rival studio), they took the basic idea of a fatal virus on the loose in the U.S., added Dustin Hoffman and director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot), and produced an unusual thriller--a surprise hit--called Outbreak. The other picture, slated to star Robert Redford and Jodie Foster, fell through. The premise of Outbreak, which owes something to Elia Kazan's 1950 plague-scare movie, Panic in the Streets, is as terrifying as it is timely. As developers slash their way deeper into the previously unexplored tropical rainforests, they are exposed to radically new forms of life, including diseases, that in these days of commonplace international travel could turn into deadly epidemics almost before we know it. Hoffman's character and his estranged wife (Rene Russo) are disease experts called in to identify the unknown killer, which was carried into the country by an illegally smuggled monkey. The best sequence shows the disease spreading--through recycled air on a passenger jet, or a sneeze in a crowded movie theater. The final chase is pretty conventional, but the cast is terrific, including Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Cuba Gooding Jr., J.T. Walsh, and Zakes Mokae. --Jim EmersonTags : Outbreak

Five--count 'em, five--chances to wallow in the shoot-first, ask-questions-later ethos of San Francisco cop Harry Callahan, who became a signature character for actor Clint Eastwood. The first one, Dirty Harry, is the best, a Don Siegel film in which Harry flouts rules about police brutality to capture a serial killer. In Magnum Force he tracks rogue cops and utters his "Do you feel lucky, punk?" speech. In The Enforcer he gets a female partner (future Cagney and Lacy star Tyne Daly). Sudden Impact featured him tracking a female serial killer and offered a new catch phrase: "Go ahead. Make my day." And The Dead Pool, aside from offering a smart little chase involving a radio-controlled model car, brought him face to face with Liam Neeson. You can't ask for much more firepower in one box than this. --Marshall Fine |
