David Byrne and Brian Eno have paired up for their first record together as co-writers since the highly influential and critically acclaimed 1981 release My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is the culmination of a year s worth of writing, recording, and travelbetween New York and London. Everything That Happens... was conceptualized during a visit to Brian Eno s studio after the two reconnected upon Nonesuch Records re-release of Bush of Ghosts. Byrne explains, ''I recall Brian mentioning that he had a lot of largely instrumental tracks he d accumulated, and since, in his words, he hates writing words, I suggested I have a go at writing some words, and tunes over a few of them, and we see what happens.'' Thus the two began exchanging vocal and instrumental tracks, and the transatlantic collaboration began. Everything That Happens...features Byrne s lyrics and voice alongside Eno s various electronic tracks. ''When we started this work, we started to think we were making something like electronic gospel: a music where singing was the central event, but whose sonic landscapes were not the type normally associated with that way of singing,'' says Eno. ''This thought tapped into my long love affair with gospel music, which, curiously, was inadvertently initiated by David and the Talking Heads.'' |
Josh Turner is the quintessential rising country star: a South Carolina native with a thrilling baritone voice and a penchant for wrapping it around heart-tugging songs of God, family, and community. On Everything is Fine, his follow-up to the double-platinum Your Man, Turner puts a more personal stamp on his message while still acknowledging his roots. He also reaches beyond his circle on a duet with r&b prince Anthony Hamilton on the latter's "Nowhere Fast," though the material doesn't precisely fit his image or his phrasing. Writing / co-writing seven of the 12 tracks, Turner particularly shines on the title song, in which a man takes stock of his life and finds it all to his liking. The affecting love ballad "Soulmate," is one of two songs he wrote with country titan John Anderson. There's room for nit-picking: "Another Try," which features Trisha Yearwood, doesn't make the best use of her mesmerizing gifts, while "Trailerhood" perpetuates every white trash stereotype. When he launches into a cover of the Johnny Horton classic "One Woman Man," however, he dutifully scrapes the bottom of his register on the chorus and playfully employs George Jones leaps on the verses, and all is forgiven. --Alanna NashTags : Everything

Billy Currington's third album, Little Bit of Everything, will be released on Oct. 14 by Mercury Nashville. Currington co-produced the album with Carson Chamberlain and co-wrote five of the 12 songs. "People kept asking what kind of music they'd hear on this next album, whether it was going to be R&B, pop, country or rock, and I seemed to keep saying the same thing," said Currington. "It's going to be a little bit of everything, I guess." Currington has topped the country singles chart with "Good Directions" and "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right." |
This clunky road movie about three drag queens (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguziamo) who get stranded in a sleepy Nebraska town on their way to a beauty contest, is too uplifting for its own good. Released during drag's mid-'90s heyday when RuPaul and the Wigstock documentary were all the rage, To Wong Foo aimed straight for the mainstream with its inoffensive camp and "can't we all get along" moralism. While gay-activist groups howled about straights getting the lead roles in To Wong Foo, in the end the filmmakers really couldn't have done better than this trio of actors. John Leguziamo provides real sass and bite as a Latino (or should we saw Latina?) drag queen, and Wesley Snipes is surprisingly fierce as the imposing leader of the pack. Saddled with a cloying Southern accent and off-kilter wig, Patrick Swayze barely holds his own with his costars, though. To Wong Foo is best viewed as a cultural artifact of a time when it seemed as though drag could rule all tomorrow's parties. --Ethan Brown |
A collection of vignettes, loosely based on the book by Dr. David Rueben, written and directed by Woody Allen, Everything contains some very funny moments. It's easy to forget that the cerebral Allen excelled at the type of broad, Catskill, dirty jokes and visual gags that run amok here. It's also remarkable how dirty this 1972 movie really was--bestiality, exposure, perversion, and S&M get their moments to shine. The Woody Allen here, who appears in many of the sketches, is a portent of the seedy old Allen of Deconstructing Harry. Although the final bit, which takes place inside a man's body during a very hot date, is hilarious, most of Everything feels like the screen adaptation of a '70s bathroom joke book. Still, a must for Allen fans. --Keith Simanton |
The 10th Pokémon movie introduces Dialga and Palkia, two Legendary Pokémon from the "Diamond" and "Pearl" versions of the game. Ash, Brock, Dawn, and Pikachu visit the town of Alamos, which is dominated by two lofty towers that represent space and time. Alamos has been plagued by nightmares and supernatural events that the arrogant Baron Alberto blames on Darkrai, a powerful and elusive Pokémon. Alice, a gentle musician whose grandmother discovered Darkrai, disagrees. Her professor friend Tonio proves the escalating problems are caused by a clash between Dialga and Palkia. Unless the humans find a way to end this battle, the space-time fabric will tear and Alamos will be thrown into another dimension. Ash and Pikachu save the day, with some help from Dawn and Alice. The Rise of Darkrai (2007) is most the elaborate Pokémon feature to date: the CG effects range from the graceful towers to fireworks and energy storms. The drawn characters and computer-generated special effects are better integrated than in the previous features. The results are sure to delight Pokémon fans.
