Holding the disparate elements in place is the powerful backbone of big drum tracks underpinning many of the songs. Wallinger says, Everyone was in orbit around this groove, and there is a universal language of dance, of dance grooves. That groove is the one bit that s non-denominational on the album. In 1998 a concert at the Royal Albert Hall celebrated Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday and featured more than two hours of hits from a body of work spanning almost three decades. In this keepsake of a memorable night, star after star steps on to a massive, Eurovision-style set to revisit golden moments in their long association with Britain's most successful composer of musicals. Elaine Paige in big frocks and an even bigger voice delivers "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and "Memory" with her usual power; Michael Ball and Donny Osmond stretch the last vestiges of boyish charm to the very limits but still sound great; and Boyzone gets the youth vote. Then there are Kiri Te Kanawa, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Arena, and, of course, another encore for brother Julian Lloyd Webber and those Variations on the cello. But the stars are Sir Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Brightman in an outstanding selection from The Phantom of the Opera (probably his best work), Antonio Banderas (who really can sing), and Glenn Close, a stupendous, moving Norma Desmond in songs from Sunset Boulevard. The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley |

The full title is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen." --Jim Emerson |
The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert).Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along. The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere. --David Horiuchi |
The subject is Busy Town, a delightful place that looks like a cross between an American small town and a Tyrolean village (the late children's author and illustrator Richard Scarry moved from the U.S. to Switzerland at age 50). A kind of whole-cloth world that becomes fully involving and entertaining for young kids, where numerous characters meet up in different combinations for all sorts of adventures, Busy Town comes alive in a series of books by Scarry for toddlers and preschoolers. The excellent batch of videos spinning off from those stories (and going beyond them) have proven to be popular not only with children but with parents, grandparents, and other significant adults in a little viewer's life. Volume 2 consists of the following: In "A New Friend on the Block," Huck and Lowly want to go to the beach, but Huck's mother asks them to take some homemade cookies to their new neighbors across the street. "Couscous in the Sahara" features French Detective Couscous in an adventure to capture Pepe the Gangster. In "Sergeant Murphy's Deputy," an overzealous, fresh-from-the-academy police officer is so eager to distribute tickets for minor infractions that she's erasing all of Murphy's goodwill in the community. Huck and Lowly find out what it takes to be "The Busiest Firefighters Ever." "Manuel of Mexico" is the story of a boy who accidentally breaks his mother's cooking pot, then gets carried away by imagining that the stealthy fellow he sees at the pottery store is an international super spy. "The Biggest Catch Ever" finds Huck and Lowly alone in Mr. Von Fluegel's hot-air balloon, which then floats away. In "The Best Babysitter Ever," Hilda Hippo babysits twin brothers Pig Will and Pig Won't, and she quickly learns the difference in the boys' disposition. "Mario the Venetian Gondolier" is a cute story about a frustrated gondolier who can't seem to lure paying passengers into his boat. "Mr. Raccoon's Different Day" is another disaster comedy in which Mr. Frumble temporarily runs a diner for his friend and pretty much demolishes the place. "Sally's First Day at School" finds Huck's sister Sally plenty nervous about her first day of kindergarten "Cucumber in the Rockies" concerns the great lengths that newspaper photographer Cucumber has to go in order to take snapshots of a ritzy wedding--including helping a Canadian Mountie apprehend two train thieves. Finally, "The Biggest Storm Ever" pits grumpy old Mr. Gronkle against the rest of Busy Town, until a flood causes Huck and others to worry about the grouchy guy's safety. --Tom Keogh |
