Longchamp 24 percent full-lead crystal, designed and made in France since 1979, continues to captivate as the most cherished pattern from Cristal D'Arques. Displaying deep diamond cuts richly clustered along the base of each piece, Longchamp so epitomizes luxurious living that the crystal has even starred as a lavish prop in the mansions of such television dramas as Dallas and Magnum. The extensive Longchamp collection consists of stemmed wine glasses, cocktail tumblers, decanters, ice and champagne buckets, presentation bowls and platters, vases, and many other items designed for sensuous pleasure. Machine-made to be affordable without sacrificing craftsmanship, Longchamp classic crystal is dishwasher-safe, although the more delicate stemware is best washed by hand.

Francophonic finally gives Franco his due. Vol. 1: 1953-1980 comes out this year, the 70th anniversary of the artist's birth. Vol. 2: 1980-1989 will be released next year, the 20th anniversary of his death. Each volume is a boxed set containing 2 CDs and a 48-page book. From Sterns - "one of the world's finest disseminators of African music," according to the New York Times -both albums are researched, compiled, annotated, illustrated and designed by the same people that produced last year's Voice of Lightness, a retrospective of Franco's rival, Tabu Ley Rochereau, which garnered high praise from National Public Radio, Rolling Stone, the New York Times and Pitchfork. This first Francophonic volume is the album that will confirm Franco's international reputation as Africa's greatest. The second volume will crown it.

He wasn't Little Stevie, the 16-year-old phenom who set mid- '60s London blazing with his Ray Charles-like vocals, anymore. He was a half-forgotten ex-member of some of rock's most progressive (Traffic) and vilified (Blind Faith) bands, and he was considering leaving show business while recording this--his second album--alone and without a backup band. Arc of a Diver reflects a resigned-to-fate mood. It boasts a synth-heavy, dub-like ambience, with dirge-y tracks like "Spanish Dancer" and the wistful single "While You See a Chance" all but zoning out of your speakers. The fates were kind, though. Recording the single, Winwood inadvertently erased the drum intro. This spacey alteration, together with his catchiest tune since "Paper Sun," catapulted the song onto the charts. In a few years he would be among the top-selling vocalists in the world. His mood was lighter. He could afford to hire engineers that didn't make mistakes. --Don Harrison

Carl Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc is as truly mythic as any film ever shot, its artistic achievement rivaled by its turbulent history. The focal point of controversy when released in 1928, the original film was lost for a half-century until an intact copy of Dreyer's original version was recovered in the early '80s. Seeing Joan of Arc today remains a cinematic revelation, its approach to storytelling, set design, editing, and especially cinematography (by Rudolph Maté, who also shot Dreyer's visionary Vampyr) radical then, and still strikingly modern many decades later. Influenced by both German expressionist film and the French avant-garde, Dreyer's huge set was designed with asymmetrical doors, windows, and arches, through which Maté's camera moves along equally off-centered, even vertiginous, but fluid trajectories. Although the story is epic in its implications, the film is composed primarily of extreme close-ups, especially of Joan and her principal interrogator, Bishop Cauchon, and medium shots of small groups, often shot from low angles. Dreyer and Maté shot their cast in bright light, without makeup, giving each wrinkle, blemish, or tuft of hair sculptural detail. For all its visual invention, however, Dreyer's film is most devastating in its central performance by Falconetti (née Renee Falconetti), a French stage actress who made her only screen appearance here--one critic Pauline Kael has suggested "may be the finest performance ever recorded on film." Through Falconetti, Joan's spiritual devotion, simple dignity, and suffering become utterly real; even without a dialogue track and only sparse inter-titles, the film achieves a fevered eloquence. This meticulous restoration also includes composer Richard Einhorn's beautiful oratorio, Voices of Light, inspired by Dreyer's film and set to texts by women mystics from medieval and early-Renaissance Europe. A luminous work on its own, Einhorn's oratorio matches both the dramatic arcs and tremulous emotions of Dreyer's film, while its juxtaposition of choral and solo voices (with early-music vocal quartet Anonymous 4 evoking Joan herself) echoes the martyr's confrontation with the court. --Sam Sutherland

A strong cast, impressive production values, and astute direction distinguish this generally successful dramatization of the tumultuous life of the 15th-century French heroine whose military victories were eclipsed by her martyrdom. At the heart of the story is the conflict between the teenager's simple but fierce faith and the more complex political and theological issues that influence her downfall, a theme fleshed out through the portrayals of the young warrior's liege, the Dauphin (later King) Charles, and the Bishop Cauchon. The 140-minute feature follows Joan D'Arc's odyssey from peasant obscurity to notoriety as the "Maid of Orleans," spiritual fulcrum for the beleaguered French forces struggling to halt English invaders. As played by Leelee Sobieski (Eyes Wide Shut), her evolution from naive farm girl to seasoned soldier is convincing, as is her gradual awakening to the underlying agendas of church and state. Most critically, Sobieski radiates the young girl's fervent spiritual devotion. Framing Sobieski's focal performance are two equally fine turns from Neil Patrick Harris, who erases his legacy as TV's Doogie Howser, M.D. with a neatly shaded, steely Charles, and Peter O'Toole, who balances his signature reserve and present physical frailty to make Cauchon a moral compass for the story. Having opposed Joan as a threat to orthodoxy, the Bishop recognizes her purity too late; O'Toole turns this moment into a dreadful epiphany that resonates through the story's inevitable, fiery denouement. Fine supporting performances from Peter Strauss, Shirley MacLaine, and Maximillian Schell, plus evocative medieval locations in the Czech Republic, further buttress the story. French-Canadian director Christian Duguay handles the large-scale battle sequences with fluid blocking and smart camera work. --Sam Sutherland

DVD sets don't come more generous or well-intended than The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Volume One. George Lucas' 1990s television series, inspired by his feature film collaborations with Steven Spielberg and actor Harrison Ford, used a childhood version of Jones as a catalyst for involving young viewers in the dynamics of 20th century history and thought. As much a scamp as Ford's swaggering hero-with-a-bullwhip, little Henry "Indy" Jones (Corey Carrier) gets into a great deal of mischief in his travels around the world with his disciplined father, Professor Henry Jones, Sr. (Lloyd Owen, doing a credible version of Sean Connery's voice from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). Also accompanied by his mother (Ruth de Sosa) and imperious tutor, Miss Seymour (Margaret Tyzack), Indy ends up in various unanticipated adventures with some of the most noteworthy individuals of his age. A trip to Paris finds him cavorting with young Norman Rockwell and an ultra-arrogant Pablo Picasso (who is out to prove that the style of aging Impressionist Edgar Degas is easy to forge). A stay in India lands Indy in the company of the great guru, Krishnamurti. In Russia, he feuds with Tolstoy as if the two were in a buddy movie. In Italy, Puccini puts romantic moves on Mrs. Jones, while Indy listens carefully in Vienna to definitions of love by none other than Freud, Jung and Adler. The overall effect of these handsome, feature-length stories, all shot on glorious location, is of a certain audacity--Lucas having the nerve to name-drop all over the place and situate Jones with some of the greatest achievers in world culture. But each episode is nothing less than spectacularly educational as well as entertaining. Scripts are carefully written to reflect what these famous individuals actually contributed to mankind, and to give a sense of what their personalities were like. The last three shows in Volume One find Jones at age 20 (played by Sean Patrick Flanery), now more or less on his own as he gets into various scrapes in Mexico (where he rides with Pancho Villa) and Ireland (where he meets William Butler Yeats). There is so much to glean from these stories, but even more to bask in on the set's many special features, which include multiple, exquisitely produced documentaries about the historical figures, political and artistic movements, and crucial events that play into this series. This is a great set for kids (probably beginning at the 6th grade level) and adults as well, preferably to watch together. --Tom Keogh

If you're in the mood to watch sassy commentary, hardcore melodrama, and extreme dating, Noah's Arc will satisfy. Eight juicy episodes comprise The Complete Second Season. A heightened sense of action in the linked narratives, not only in the sexual sense, taps in to the old-school soap opera model, leaving the viewer jonesing to find out what will happen next. Stories center around five tight-knit buddies, Noah, Chance, Alex, Ricky, and Trey, but so many boyfriends come and go that it's tricky to even keep up with who's who in this handsome world. The men take everything, including themselves, way too seriously, but that's part of the fun. Most notably in The Second Season, Noah's ex, Wade, hovers in the background as Noah attempts to fall in love with gentlemanly Malik in "Housequake," the rapper Baby Gat in "Give It Up," and with politically astute Quincy in episodes six and seven. Dating galore amongst all the men leaves the viewer reeling, but each episode also tackles more serious issues in the gay community, like when Noah gets brutally beaten in "Baby, Can I Hold You?" or when Ricky braves dating an HIV-positive beau. Humor levels stay high with queen Alex's undying flair, while college professor, Chance, and his boyfriend, Eddie, hold down the fort in a more understated way. Corny, dramatic, funny, ridiculous, and touching all at once, this second season of Noah's Arc contains enough surprise to keep viewers riveted until the last microsecond of the season's finale. The Panasonic Arc IV Nanotech Shaver offers remarkable shaving on the first pass. Equipped with a quadruple foil and four cutting blades, the cutting surface of this shaver has been expanded by 32 percent, offering a better shave with each stroke. The blades are powered by Panasonic's linear motor, which operates at an amazingly fast rate so even the thickest beards or no match for this shaver.
The industry's sharpest 30-degree blades are polished using nanotechnology. | Innovative Technology Provides the Best Shave Nanotechnology was used to polish the industry's sharpest 30-degree blades to achieve even better cutting performance. This razor's expanded cutting surface not only provides an efficient shave, but it also spreads the pressure, which naturally occurs when applying the shaver to the skin, so users have found it to perform without the irritation found on lesser models. The fourth finishing blade provides an additional cutting opportunity not found on triple-blade shavers. In addition, the foils and blades on this razor are "arced" so they nestle gently into the skin for our closest shave ever. The foil glides evenly for uniform shaving on all surfaces of the face. Get Great Shaving Results with Ultra Speed At the heart of razor lies Panasonic's patented Linear Motor. It operates at an amazingly fast 13,000 rpm to cut through the thickest of beards. Standard razors operate at a pedestrian 8,000 to 10,000 rpm. To top it all off, this razor also features wet/dry operation, so you can use it in the convenience of your shower or for dry shaving when you have less time. A liquid crystal display indicates battery charge level by 10 steps and a cleaning reminder. It also comes equipped with a convenient travel case. There is nothing slow about this razor. Even clean-up is at hyper speed. Simply hold the razor under running water and activate the Turbo mode. The razor accelerates up to 17,000 RPM and vibrates off any remaining whiskers. | | Panasonic ES3831K Single Blade Travel Shaver, Black
