The Grey's Anatomy soundtracks feature an eclectic mix of indie pop and rock artists whose music is heard during the wildly popular ABC drama about surgical interns in Seattle. The albums' tracks, many of which can be heard during key emotional scenes in various episodes, were chosen by the show's creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, and executive producer Betsy Beers from a large pool of artists introduced to them by music supervisor Alex Patsavas. "We fall in love with the songs," says Rhimes. "We ride around listening to them in our cars. We call each other to talk about them on the phone. We get them into our heads and into our souls. And then we weave them into the show because we can't live without them."
Vol. 1 features electrifying music from such beloved indie artists as Rilo Kiley, The Postal Service, Ben Lee, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as undiscovered talent such as London-based electropop duo Psapp, who supply the show's main title song "Cosy in the Rocket."

It's hard to find a more upbeat way to start an album, any album, than Peter, Bjorn & John's "Young Folks." One of the most infectious indie-pop songs of the past few years, "Young Folks" plays off the sweet guest vocals of former Concretes Victoria Bergsman to rocket up into feel-good stratosphere. The rest of this collection does not quite reach these dizzy heights, dragged back down to earth by the ballads that pretty much make up the second half. Still, no wonder Grey's Anatomy soundtracks do so well: They tend to focus on melodic, accessible music of the indie persuasion, but they are also cannily curated, mixing emerging artists with more established (but not necessarily marquee) names. The third Grey's volume boasts a trio of new tracks by Mat Kearney, Gomez, and John Legend, but they're oddly sappy (Legend fares better than the other two). Among the acts who might well benefit from the exposure are Koop and "Come to Me," a fantastically bouncy electronica-swing tune (an odd mix, but it works); Bill Ricchini and his lovely "A Cold Wind Will Blow Through Your Door," a testament to its author's ability to update classic pop-troubadour sounds of the '60s and '70s; and Jesus Jackson's "Running on Sunshine", because why walk on sunshine when you can run on it? --Elisabeth Vincentelli |

Otto Preminger turned this 1959 courtroom drama, based on the popular novel, into terrific adult drama. James Stewart stars as a small-town lawyer who defends an army officer (Ben Gazzara) accused of murdering a bartender who assaulted his wife (Lee Remick). The taut script, large performance by Stewart, and then-daring elements of the story (words like "panties" are spoken in the context of discussing a sex crime) give the action a certain immediacy--which you don't find very often in today's movies about jurisprudence. Nice work by Remick and Gazzara, as well as George C. Scott, Arthur O'Connell, and real-life judge Joseph N. Welch, who plays the judge in this film. A very good experience all around. --Tom Keogh |

Season four of the hit ABC medical drama was on shaky ground right from the season premiere, which left Cristina (Sandra Oh) at the altar by Burke (Isaiah Washington, fired after the press-frenzied third season); Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) downgraded to no-relationship-just-sex status; and George (T.R. Knight) pondering divorce from Callie (Sara Ramirez) to pursue love with his best friend, Izzie (Katherine Heigl). That last pairing made for one of the worst decisions in the series thus far; George and Izzie always worked so well as friends without the will-they-won't-they element, but suddenly throwing them into bed and watching them fumble their way to coupledom (an attempt that mercifully doesn't last) was painful to watch, in particular because Heigl, who had won an Emmy for the previous season, was reduced to a lot of whining and fretting. Meanwhile, Meredith's family issues come to a head when her half-sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh) begins her internship at Seattle Grace and instantly tries too hard to bond. And as she once again drives away Derek with her trust issues, Meredith finally gets smart and enters therapy (one of the redeeming elements of the season, with Amy Madigan as the hard-nosed counselor) to "get healed." The writers' strike became a welcome blessing for the show, which had seriously derailed before its hiatus; during the strike, creator Shonda Rimes has said she reexamined the direction of the show, making for an ultimately satisfying second half of the season. Standout episodes include "Forever Young," in which a high school bus crash leaves the staff pontificating their own adolescent cliques; "Lay Your Hands on Me," with a standout performance by Chandra Wilson as Bailey, whose crumbling marriage comes front and center when her toddler gets in an accident; and the season finale "Freedom," in which Meredith and Derek save two brain-tumor patients in love (Jurnee Smollett and Marshall Allman), leading to their own (lasting?) reunion, Bailey heads up an effort to rescue a guy who lay in concrete to impress a girl; and Callie finds herself attracted to the new cardiac surgeon, Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith). Bonus features include "New Docs on the Block," a look at the latest members of the cast; a set tour with Dempsey and Eric "McSteamy" Dane; bonus and extended scenes; and outtakes. --Ellen A.
