For their fifth album, Saturdays = Youth, France's M83 conjures up the 1980s in all their candy-colored glory. Even the cover portrait, showcasing models in rolled-sleeve blazers, peg-leg pants, and pastel prom dresses, evokes John Hughes' high-school classics Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. In the liner notes, singer/multi-instrumentalist Anthony Gonzalez thanks the individuals who "made my teenager years so great!" and in "Graveyard Girl," he name-checks Molly Ringwald (he also takes a page from the Air playbook with allusions to stars, rockets, and other notebook-doodle favorites). There's a difference, however, between poaching from the past and recreating it. Despite the abundance of pretty-boy (and girl) vocals, oceanic keyboards, and big electronic beats--recalling '80s icons from Simple Minds to Kate Bush--Saturdays feels more like an affectionate tribute than a cynical carbon copy. Like the couple at the heart of "Kim and Jessie," Gonzalez is "crazy about romance and illusions," but all is not sweetness and light as a few numbers betray a Tim Burton-style Goth influence, which helps to alleviate any potential sugar shock. Saturdays = Youth is a precious gift from a secret admirer, wrapped in ambience and sealed with a blood-red kiss. --Kathleen C. FennessyTags : SaturdaysYouth

Big Blue Ball is the long-awaited, much-anticipated collection of stand-out tracks culled from the all-star, pan-global collaborations that took place over three years of Peter Gabriel s legendary Recording Week gatherings at his state-of-the-art Real World Studios in the English countryside. Produced by Peter Gabriel, Karl Wallinger (of World Party, Waterboys) and Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, OMD), it s a nonstop stream of poignant, sterling performances by a truly stellar lineup of artists-- including Gabriel, Wallinger, Sinead O Connor, Natacha Atlas, Iarla O Lionaird and James McNally (both of Afro Celt Sound System), Papa Wemba, Joseph Arthur, Tanzania s late music legend Hukwe Zawose, Hungary s Marta Sebestyen, Tim Finn, Cameroonian starFrancis Bebey, Vernon Reid, Justin Adams, Jah Wobble, Billy Cobham, Rupert Hine, gospel group the Holmes Brothers, flamenco guitarist Juan Canizares, Japanese percussionist Joji Hirota, and many more...in all totaling 75 artists from over 20 countries. It s like a wall of sound coming at you, listening to the planet from outer space, says Karl Wallinger of the final mix. It s a real world-view of music, a snapshot of the music-making continents at that time. It s a more apt time to release it now than ever before. I think it s actually gathered weight with time, because it s people from all over the world playing together, just getting on together. There s an iconic aspect about that which is probably more important now. Things have become more partisan. It s a timely reminder of how you can cooperate. Big Blue Ball s songs were created and recorded between 1991 and 1995, but the album has been an active work-in-progress at Real World ever since, a labor of love with ace producer Stephen Hague working closely with Peter Gabriel and Karl Wallinger. Holding the disparate elements in place is the powerful backbone of big drum tracks underpinning many of the songs. Wallinger says, Everyone was in orbit around this groove, and there is a universal language of dance, of dance grooves. That groove is the one bit that s non-denominational on the album. Says Peter Gabriel, It s a fine wine ready to be drunk. It was the most fun music making I ve ever had. I d love to do it again. |

Just when this Icelandic crew seemed stuck in loud/soft/loud/ soft rut a la Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they release their most beguiling, subtle and beautiful album yet. This album, allegedly the group's first sung in Icelandic rather than their own made-up "Hopelandic" (not that this listener could tell the difference) is relentlessly joyous, unaffectedly rad and inventive but never just for its own sake. Strings hold an ever more prominent place in the music, and this is a good thing. Songs unfold slowly as usual, but they take unexpected turns as often as not. The brilliant "Glósóli" burbles with as much melodic invention and anything by their fellow Icelanders Mum. Takk is a delight from start to finish, managing to be both their most accessible and experimental album yet. --Mike McGonigalTags : Takk

Canyon Dreams aspires to reach the heights of the groundbreaking documentary Koyaanisqatsi. But for one, this 40-minute physical examination of the glory of the Grand Canyon features the music of New Age staple Tangerine Dream on the soundtrack instead of composer Philip Glass. And it hasn't the power or the political comment to match its mentor's visual bite. This awe-filled travelogue rarely sways from the formula set by that more original and astute cautionary documentary, yet it also fails to snatch its chance at taking a stand. Broken into six segments--Shadow Flyer, Canyon Carvers, A Matter of Time, Water's Gift, Canyon Voices, and Sudden Revelation--this reverent and staid view of the natural wonder that is Colorado's Grand Canyon results in a postcard-pretty film that quickly loses its impact. It sifts through a bland water, desert, and air approach to the natural monument and though in its first segment Canyon Dreams offers a glimpse into the architectural power of the place from the alien eye of a glider--which could be likened to a first glimpse at Mars--the prevailing shorts have little to offer that exalt the sandstone striations. Canyon Dreams opts to trivialize its subject, turning it into a Hallmark card rather than acting as a message-bearing warning: this spiritual sight could easily become an endangered species. What should be a strong reminder of our tenuous hold on the planet becomes a soothing pat on the head that complacently placates and massages the senses rather than incites viewers to feel or act. --Paula Nechak |

Waves, lightning, peacock feathers, dolphins, champagne bubbles, falling leaves, the big bang...our fans have seen all this and more in the abstract imagery in an excursion in ambient video. There's no telling what you'll discover as you explore this amazing new art form. We took this visual dance and choreographed it to three suites of music for the spirit--soothing, uplifting, transcendent.....
Throughout an excursion in ambient video, waves of color slowly flow around and through natural, organic shapes, in synchrony with music. The music itself ranges from solo guitar to sweeping electronic orchestration. The result is a gentle massage for the eyes and ears--a sensual experience that releases tension and frees the mind to soar......
An excursion in ambient video has something for everyone. Artists and creative thinkers appreciate the new thoughts and ideas it stimulates. Science and technology buffs enjoy the "sci-fi" feeling of the shapes--high-tech, yet organic. New-age seekers find serenity in the gentle flow of shapes and colors--an "open-eye meditation." And kids can make a game of naming the different images--in fact, it's a good game for the child in each of us......
So put it on in the background, and let it draw you in. Or watch closely, and experience the free flow of feeling and thought it inspires. However you look at it, an excursion in ambient video will lift your spirits, elevate your attitude, and brighten your overall outlook on life.

Shot in HD! Look, but don't touch. Yes, the warmth and beauty of a wood-burning fireplace is mesmerizing. But, all fires and fireplaces are not created equal which is evident from Ambient Fire: The Ultimate Video Fireplace DVD. Visually, the DVD leaves nothing to be desired. It looks spectacular. There are a variety of different fireplaces on the DVD, obviously a desire to cater to everyone's taste. There are "just logs", a marble fireplace, a "modern" fireplace, "just flames", a "cuddle-up-next-to-the-fire Holiday scene" which features lots of holiday decorations and a train going around a tree, and even a campfire scene. Features a total of 9 different scenes. Smartly, they've made the most "desirable" scenes 35 minutes long and scenes like the campfire only 10 minutes. Of course, you can loop any of the scenes for endless playback. Includes 5.1 fire sound effects and a variety of music choices including classical, guitar, and holiday. You can even choose to have the sound of fire mixed in with the music - a nice touch. This DVD, like its aquarium counterpart, Ambient Water, includes built-in playlists as well as the ability to create custom playlists. |

How do you find your way in an age of information overload? How can you filter streams of complex information to pull out only what you want? Why does it matter how information is structured when Google seems to magically bring up the right answer to your questions? What does it mean to be "findable" in this day and age? This eye-opening new book examines the convergence of information and connectivity. Written by Peter Morville, author of the groundbreaking "Information Architecture for the World Wide Web," the book defines our current age as a state of unlimited findability. In other words, anyone can find anything at any time. Complete navigability. Morville discusses the Internet, GIS, and other network technologies that are coming together to make unlimited findability possible. He explores how the melding of these innovations impacts society, since Web access is now a standard requirement for successful people and businesses. But before he does that, Morville looks back at the history of wayfinding and human evolution, suggesting that our fear of being lost has driven us to create maps, charts, and now, the mobile Internet. The book's central thesis is that information literacy, information architecture, and usability are all critical components of this new world order. Hand in hand with that is the contention that only by planning and designing the best possible software, devices, and Internet, will we be able to maintain this connectivity in the future. Morville's book is highlighted with full color illustrations and rich examples that bring his prose to life. "Ambient Findability" doesn't preach or pretend to know all the answers. Instead, it presentsresearch, stories, and examples in support of its novel ideas. Are we truly at a critical point in our evolution where the quality of our digital networks will dictate how we behave as a species? Is findability indeed the primary key to a successful global marketplace in the 21st century and beyond. Peter Morville takes you on a thought-provoking tour of these memes and more -- ideas that will not only fascinate but will stir your creativity in practical ways that you can apply to your work immediately. ""A lively, enjoyable and informative tour of a topic that's only going to become more important."" --David Weinberger, Author, "Small Pieces Loosely Joined" and "The Cluetrain Manifesto" ""I envy the young scholar who finds this inventive book, by whatever strange means are necessary. The future isn't just unwritten--it's unsearched."" --Bruce Sterling, Writer, Futurist, and Co-Founder, The Electronic Frontier Foundation ""Search engine marketing is the hottest thing in Internet business, and deservedly so. Ambient Findability puts SEM into a broader context and provides deeper insights into human behavior. This book will help you grow your online business in a world where being found is not at all certain."" --Jakob Nielsen, Ph.D., Author, "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity" ""Information that's hard to find will remain information that's hardly found--from one of the fathers of the discipline of information architecture, and one of its most experienced practitioners, come penetrating observations on why findability is elusive and how the act of seeking changes us."" --Steve Papa, Founder and Chairman, Endeca ""Whether it's a fact or a figure, a person or a place, Peter Morville knows how to make it findable. Morville explores the possibilities of a world where everything can always be found--and the challenges in getting there--in this wide-ranging, thought-provoking book."" --Jesse James Garrett, Author, "The Elements of User Experience" ""It is easy to assume that current searching of the World Wide Web is the last word in finding and using information. Peter Morville shows us that search engines are just the beginning. Skillfully weaving together information science research with his own extensive experience, he develops for the reader a feeling for the near future when information is truly findable all around us. There are immense implications, and Morville's lively and humorous writing brings them home."" --Marcia J. Bates, Ph.D., University of California Los Angeles ""I've always known that Peter Morville was smart. After reading Ambient Findability, I now know he's (as we say in Boston) wicked smart. This is a timely book that will have lasting effects on how we create our future." --Jared Spool, Founding Principal, User Interface Engineering ""In Ambient Findability, Peter Morville has put his mind and keyboard on the pulse of the electronic noosphere. With tangible examples and lively writing, he lays out the challenges and wonders of finding our way in cyberspace, and explains the mutually dependent evolution of our changing world and selves. This is a must read for everyone and a practical guide for designers."" --Gary Marchionini, Ph.D., University of North Carolina ""Find this book! Anyone interested in makinginformation easier to find, or understanding how finding and being found is changing, will find this thoroughly researched, engagingly written, literate, insightful and very, very cool book well worth their time. Myriad examples from rich and varied domains and a valuable idea on nearly every page. Fun to read, too!" --Joseph Janes, Ph.D., Founder, Internet Public Library |

Fans of Woody Allen have long waited to hear him tell us in his own words about his life, his tastes, and his films, but until recently he has been reluctant to give lengthy interviews. This book is the conversation we've been waiting for, a dialogue with Stig Bjorkman in which Allen speaks openly about himself and his art. Bjorkman invites the writer/director to talk at length about his lesser-known movies as well as his famous ones. We also learn about Allen's filmmaking technique, his feelings about his stock company of actors, his influences, and why Stardust Memories and The Purple Rose of Cairo are his two personal favorites. |
