Someone get Amy Adams on the Broadway stage, stat! She may not have the huge pipes that are supposed to be necessary for singers nowadays, but based on her sweet performance of three songs on this soundtrack, she gets a tune. Leaving aside High School Musical-style contemporary pop, Disney returns to its sources here, with a fairy tale set to a traditional-minded score by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, etc.). The first three songs are loving, well-crafted homages to Disney classics, such as Cinderella and Snow White; tellingly, the lovely "Happy Working Song" (with lyrics by Stephen "Wicked" Schwartz) sounds like it could have been lifted from any number of Disney movies--and that's meant as a compliment. Carrie Underwood brings us back into the 21st century with the single "Ever Ever After", which in comparison feels a bit more anonymous. Menken also supplies several instrumental cues, often reprising themes alluded to in the songs, and James Marsden wraps things up with a hilariously straight-faced version of "That's Amore." --Elisabeth Vincentelli More from Disney

Alvin has worked as a producer for several other roots-oriented acts, including Tom Russell, The Derailers and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, as well as collaborating with rockabilly legend Sonny Burgess. Winner of the Academy Award for best picture of 1989, this gracefully moving drama, adapted from the hit play by Alfred Uhry, chronicles the 25-year friendship between a stubborn, aging Southern widow (Jessica Tandy) and her loyal chauffeur (Morgan Freeman). At first, the self-sufficient Miss Daisy is reluctant to accept the services of a chauffeur, but Hoke is quiet, wise, and tolerant, and as the years pass the unlikely friends develop a deep mutual respect and admiration. Tandy deservedly won the Oscar for her sassy and sensitive performance, and Freeman earned an Oscar nomination for bringing quiet depth and integrity to his memorable role. Ironically, director Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies) was not nominated, but the film won Oscars for makeup and for Uhry's screenplay, in addition to a supporting actor nomination for Dan Aykroyd as Daisy's supportive son. Delicate, funny, and bittersweet, Driving Miss Daisy was a surprise hit when released, and marked the crowning achievement of Tandy's great career. --Jeff Shannon |

Families come in many different shapes and sizes, but few humans consider rodents members of the family. Dave Seville (Jason Lee) is no exception, so when this flailing musician finds three young talking chipmunks gorging themselves in his kitchen cupboards, Dave is quick to question his sanity and then toss the offending chipmunks outside into the rain and restore order. When Dave hears the chipmunks singing outside his window, he realizes that that unusual trio might just be the world's next vocal sensation and he strikes a bargain with them--the chipmunks can stay with him if they sing his songs. While chipmunks Alvin (Justin Long), Theodore (Jesse McCartney), and Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) quickly begin to see Dave as a father figure, it's strictly a business arrangement for Dave and he maintains an appropriate emotional distance. Dave's frustration with the chipmunks mounts as they unwittingly wreak havoc on his personal life, but when Dave's old friend and record label mogul Ian (David Cross) begins to exploit the chipmunks for personal gain, Dave suddenly realizes what an important part of his life, and indeed his family, the three chipmunks have become. Hilarity reins in this live action/CGI comedy with many memorable scenes--think chipmunks showering in the dishwasher, riding in remote control planes, and bouncing off the walls under the influence of a serious caffeine buzz. Catchy Chipmunks' songs both new and old promise to lodge themselves in the minds of viewers long after the credits roll and even those none-too-enchanted with the premise of singing chipmunks can't help but be entertained by this comical film.
