Glenn Gould's Bach is by now so ingrained in the 20th-century musical consciousness that it's almost hard to remember just how unusual his devotion to this composer was back in the 1950s and '60s when he first started making records. That his Bach recordings are still the standard by which all others are measured is a tribute to his self-awareness as an artist. If you are looking for the essential Glenn Gould playing Bach, then the three sets you really ought to have are his Goldberg Variations (either version), plus the two books of The Well-Tempered Clavier. Gould was simply incomparable in the contrapuntal intricacies of Bach's fugal writing, and in The Well-Tempered Clavier he has 48 opportunities to strut his stuff. While fleeing to Hollywood from the Nazi threat in Germany, Billy Wilder laid over in Paris long enough to make his directing debut. Which means Mauvaise Graine just happens to be the beginning of one of the great directing careers in movies. This lark, codirected by Alexander Esway, follows a wealthy young man who falls in with a gang of thieves. It has the wonderful feel of open-air French filmmaking of the 1930s, and Wilder's direction has the anything-goes spirit of an ambitious kid throwing away his training wheels. A bonus is the leading lady, the charming Danielle Darrieux (still starring in movies in 2002's Eight Women), then a teenager. It may be a rough sketch for the Wilder movies to come, but the sense of adventure and the bittersweet tone are unmistakable. --Robert Horton |
Want a perky pep-talk intro to yoga? Denise Austin cheerily pushes the viewer through an introduction to basic yoga asanas with an earful of self-affirmations and an attempt at speaking in a soothing voice, but she ends up sounding like a kindergarten teacher talking to her class. Her basic approach uses slow explanation and demonstration, ample stretching time, and noteworthy backdrops, including Sun Canyon in the Utah desert. Be forewarned: her "Oh, let me see your smiling faces" and "You're doing so good! Doesn't this feel grrreat!" statements amount to self-affirmation overload, and you may want to employ the mute button and concentrate on the stretches by just watching Austin. Stretches include standing poses, sitting poses, and an almost interest-numbing round of sun salutations. Beginner's Yoga Essentials also includes a final "Relaxation." Collectors of other Denise Austin fitness and aerobics videos may find this right in keeping with their affinity for her approach, but those seeking a truly relaxing and basic no-nonsense approach to yoga should look to the Yoga Journal series of videos. --Gilia Angell |

The fact that the late Charlie Byrd was a jazzman who plied his trade on a nylon-stringed Spanish guitar, making him the biggest fish in a pretty small pond, takes nothing away from this masterful performance by the guitarist and his trio. Recorded in 1990 at Duke's Place in New Orleans, the 55-minute, 11-song gig finds Byrd, bassist (and brother) Joe Byrd, and drummer Chuck Redd covering familiar material by the likes of Fats Waller ("Jitterbug Waltz"), Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Corcovado" and a brilliant "Wave"), Duke Ellington ("Satin Doll"), Thelonious Monk ("Blue Monk"), and others. Excellent sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0) and superb camera work (the close-ups along the guitar neck showing Byrd's finger-picking technique are especially good) enhance a performance that may not be especially exciting (don't expect any burning, fret-grinding solos here) but is nonetheless a clinic in masterful jazz musicianship.
