An old widow, Mrs. Maberley (Mary Ellis), receives a suspicious offer of a large sum of money to move out of her depressing mansion and leave absolutely everything behind. Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) looks into this strange proposition and comes face to face with an enforcer and powerful pugilist (Steve Toussaint), who Holmes cuts down to size with verbal agility. Less lucky is Dr. Watson (Edward Hardwicke), who goes a round with the oversized fellow after he catches him terrorizing poor Mrs. Maberley. This adaptation may, in all honesty, be an improvement on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original story. As usual, Brett and Hardwicke are an exceptional team as Holmes and Watson. --Tom Keogh |

The summer of 1998 heralded the big screen debut of one of television's most classic science-fiction shows: Irwin Allen's Lost in Space. The saga of the space family Robinson unfolds when a saboteur sneaks aboard the Jupiter 2 with the intent of destroying the mission and is unwittingly trapped aboard during takeoff. While the destruction of the Jupiter 2 is averted, enough damage is done to send the space ship hurtling through space on an unknown course. Starring William Hurt, Gary Oldman, and Mimi Rogers, Lost in Space made a spectacular premiere last summer. To give Lost in Space a sound that would capture the incredible on-screen adventures, composer Bruce Broughton (Silverado, Tombstone) created a major, epic score. With grand orchestral splendor for the launch of the Jupiter 2 from Earth, aggressive dissonance in the action scenes, and a rich palette of symphonic color throughout, Broughton has made the Robinson's world a spectacular soundscape. A soundtrack album released on another label at the time of the film's premiere included a collection of rock songs and a suite of excerpts from the Broughton score. This new edition provides a comprehensive recording of Broughton's score, totaling 67 minutes -- all stunningly played by the Sinfonia Of London. |
In twelve engaging essays, William Fulton chronicles the history of urban planning in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, tracing the legacy of short-sighted political and financial gains that has resulted in a vast urban region on the brink of disaster. Looking at such diverse topics as shady real estate speculations, the construction of the Los Angeles subway, the battle over the future of South Central L.A. after the 1992 riots, and the emergence of Las Vegas as "the new Los Angeles," Fulton offers a fresh perspective on the city's epic sprawl. The only way to reverse the historical trends that have made Los Angeles increasingly unliveable, Fulton concludes, is to confront the prevailing "cocoon citizenship," the mind-set that prevents the city's inhabitants and leaders from recognizing Los Angeles's patchwork of communities as a single metropolis. |
What would you steal if you couldn't get caught? That's the tag line of Brad Meltzer's new thriller, which pits an ambitious young money manager against a corporate villain, whose intricate financial shenanigans accidentally put a huge chunk of dough right in front of a man who desperately needs it. Of course Oliver Caruso's conscience troubles him, but that doesn't keep him from letting his somewhat looser and less ethical brother convince him this is too good an opportunity to pass up. Meltzer's in interesting territory here, but in order to buy his premise, you have to believe that it's OK to steal if you have a good enough reason. This makes his protagonist, who narrates the novel, hard to root for and less than sympathetic. Despite this hollow ring, the book is nicely plotted and should please the author's enthusiastic fan club. --Jane AdamsTags : The
