Unlike his In a Sentimental Mood, which swung wildly from Tin Pan Alley standards to supper-club blues, Afterglow is mostly interested in recapturing the late '40s and early '50s, when jazz, blues, and pop intersected with sophisticated ease. The choice of material is impeccable--songs made popular by Nat "King" Cole, Louis Jordan, and Duke Ellington--and the playing is superb throughout. However, "Ain't I Been Good to You," "Just a Lucky So and So," and a stark read of "I'm Confessin'" are particularly effective. And on his original, "I Still Believe in You," Dr. John proves just how influenced he is by West Coast blues legend Charles Brown, who once recorded at Cosimo Matassa's studio where the future Night Tripper got his start. "Focus on Healing is not only physiologically and anatomically sound, it is psychologically critical for recovering breast-cancer patients," says Marc Lebed, M.D. He recommends this program for women after mastectomies to increase arm range of motion and mobility, decrease lymphedema, and enhance feelings of femininity and sensuality. These exercises are gentle and can be done sitting in a chair if necessary. The movement class is made up of five ordinary-looking women, all breast-cancer survivors, some overweight, some middle-aged, wearing oversized T-shirts. No supermodels, athletes, or bare midriffs like you see in most of today's exercise videotapes. The instructor is heard as a voice-over, explaining the moves clearly and giving encouraging tips. First is a long upper-body stretch sequence performed standing beside a chair, with classical music playing softly in the background. Some full-body movements are added for those who can do them; the others do modified moves while seated. Next is the "fast, upbeat section." The movements become quicker, still emphasizing upper-body range of motion. Although you do this section standing if you can (one person remains seated), there's no footwork, no choreography. It's mainly swinging, reaching, and pushing the arms in various ways. Then comes stretching, circulation, and more fast movements (this time with a tiny bit of footwork, but nothing taxing or difficult). If you're just getting moving again, this 49-minute program could be an excellent way to start getting stronger and more flexible and feeling better. --Joan Price |

Triumph of the Will is one of the most important films ever made. Not because it documents evil--more watchable examples are being made today. And not as a historical example of blind propaganda--those (much shorter) movies are merely laughable now. No, Riefenstahl's masterpiece--and it is a masterpiece, politics aside--combines the strengths of documentary and propaganda into a single, overwhelmingly powerful visual force.Riefenstahl was hired by the Reich to create an eternal record of the 1934 rally at Nuremberg, and that's exactly what she does. You might not become a Nazi after watching her film, but you will understand too clearly how Germany fell under Hitler's spell. The early crowd scenes remind one of nothing so much as Beatles concert footage (if only their fans were so well behaved!). Like the fascists it monumentalizes, Triumph of the Will overlooks its own weaknesses--at nearly two hours, the speeches tend to drone on, and the repeated visual motifs are a little over-hypnotic, especially for modern viewers. But the occasional iconic vista (banners lining the streets of Nuremberg, Hitler parting a sea of 200,000 party members standing at attention) will electrify anyone into wakefulness. --Grant Balfour |
