What once seemed Queen's greatest liabilities--a preening flamboyance and pompous, overwrought theatricality--have ironically become their most enduring charms in a gray, postmodern pop-music landscape. While it eschews the glammy, pre-punk hard rock of live faves like "Stone Cold Crazy" and "Tie Your Mother Down" for the band's more quirky club-beat string of latter-day hits, this 51-track triple-CD anthology goes a long way toward documenting the true dimensions of the band's music and fame. Some songs may not be instantly familiar to American fans because of yet another irony: just as their U.S. fortunes waned during the punk and new wave era, the band was exploding into true international superstars. Thus, there may be a sense of discovery here, whether of latter-day Queen material or solo work by Brian May and Freddie Mercury, whose duet on "Barcelona" with diva Montserrat Caballé transcends boundaries of both time and genre. To say that Springsteen's live shows with the E Street Band were legendary is the height of understatement. On a good night, the set might extend to three and four hours of exhilarating, pulse-pounding rock & roll. How best to capture that on CD? Or was it possible at all? As it turns out, Live 1975-1985 comes as close to the experience as possible. Culling material from various tours and settings ranging from small rooms to stadiums, the three-CD set emphatically displays Springsteen's charisma as a bandleader and storyteller and makes plain the sheer power of the E Street Band. Some of the many highlights here include covers of Edwin Starr's "War," Tom Waits's "Jersey Girl," and Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" and rare versions of originals such as "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Seeds." And relax--all the hits are here as well. If you never saw Springsteen and the E Streeters back then, you might still get your chance. Nostalgic music fans that look back fondly on the radio and TV consoles of the '40s and '50s will delight in the Teac GF-680 stereo system, which combines modern components with a retro design. The system is housed in a classic wooden, four-legged cabinet with old-time speaker panels on the lower front. Above the panels, however, sit all the modern music complements, along with a couple that hark back a few decades. The device is centered around a three-disc drawer-type CD changer for enjoying modern digital formats, along with a three-speed turntable that lets you listen to your original Bowie recordings on vinyl. Users can also revisit the era when pop singles and jazz cuts ruled the airwaves by speeding the turntable to 45 or 78 rpm. Of course, any good classic console also needs an AM/FM radio, and the GF-680's is particularly reliable thanks to its quartz PLL synthesized tuning and the 40 station presets (20 AM and 20 FM). And should you tire of CDs, LPs, and the radio, you can always pop in your '80s cassettes for a big-hair flashback. The dual deck also dubs from tape to tape and records from the other audio sources. The most significant modern touch comes in the form of the two-way speaker system, which fortunately sounds nothing like the scratchy speakers of yesteryear. Each speaker boasts a 5.25-inch woofer and a 2-inch tweeter, with a bass boost system adding extra oomph to the lows. In addition, the system offers three preset equalizer settings (for rock, pop, and classic) to round out your music's audio profile. JVC's XU-301BK combination CD/minidisc player-recorder is a recording enthusiast's dream machine. It plays back three CDs or a single minidisc, lets you brew your own custom digital recordings, and even lets you mix CD with line sources (such as the input from another CD player), CD with microphone, or line with microphone sources when recording. While the XU-301BK isn't exactly cheap, its sound quality and features are outstanding, making it an exciting component and a fine value.The XU-301BK is CD text-compatible, reading and displaying the title and track information encoded in many newer CDs. But even with older CDs, the XU-301BK lets you input (via the front panel, or, as we prefer, via the remote control's mini keyboard) a disc's title, artist, and one of 27 preselected musical genres. Other features include JVC's Compu Link remote operation capability, a sleep/timer, a full array of inputs and outputs (including optical-digital as well as analog-line and microphone inputs), a CD pitch control, and a sampling-rate converter to allow recording of digital audio from sources whose original sampling rates are either 32, 44.1, or 48 kHz (the standard CD sampling frequency is 44.1 kHz). At first glance, the XU-301BK's busy front panel and remote control may seem intimidating--after all, this machine does a lot. But once you've used it for a while, the XU-301BK is actually pretty straightforward; record buttons are even highlighted in red. Playing CDs and minidiscs with the XU-301BK is easy, and you can mix playback between them using one of three program modes or the random mode. We especially like the XU-301BK's unusual jog dial control, which lets you rapidly skip forward or back to the next track with either format--not just with minidisc. The XU-301BK sounds great with both CD and minidisc: well-balanced, open, detailed, and natural, with excellent separation and imaging. The bottom end exerts good authority and the player sounds quite neutral, with no exaggerated sonic coloration. Recording is also a breeze. With the press of a single button, we could record to minidisc an entire CD or the first track of each CD loaded into the player. We also enjoyed using the XU-301BK's many editing functions, which let you splice tracks, rearrange tracks, and erase any or all tracks with ease. The XU-301BK is not CD-R/RW compatible, but chances are that if you're buying this component you've already settled on minidisc as your digital recording format of choice. JVC has produced one of the most versatile record-playback devices we know in the XU-301BK. This three CD compilation forms part of the British Library's series of documentary recordings by English-Language authors and playwrights. Around 30 writers will be represented, talking about their lives and work. The recordings derive primarily from BBC broadcasts, the earliest of them dating from the 1930s, and include historic recordings of the first generation of writers whose voices survive through to senior figures of the present day. Among the writers included will be Rudyard Kipling, Virginia Woolf, Ian Fleming and Harold Pinter. The majority of the recordings have not been published before. A three CD compilation devoted to American writers, containing never-released audio footage is in production and will accompany this set. |
