Yes, this is the Linda Richman, the mother-in-law Mike Meyers made famous in his "Coffee Talk" skits on Saturday Night Live back in the 1990s. But she's not dishing about Streisand in this PBS special. Instead, she deals with some serious issues ranging from depression to agoraphobia. Subtitled "How to Be Happy Even When Life Has Other Plans for You," this 75-minute lecture outlines Richman's less-than-happy life. Her father died when she was 8, her mother was eventually institutionalized for depression, she married a chronic gambler when she was 19, she became housebound for 11 years, and then after recovering she lost one of her two adult children in a car accident. But Richman manages to find humor in her life as she addresses the audience while strolling about the "living room" set. She offers homespun advice, all self-tested, on how to wallow in misery and then get on with life. Richman is a compelling enough speaker that the camera wisely stays with her, making for mercifully few audience shots. She recounts conversations from her life, tells stories about her friends, and even includes an anecdote or two about her daughter and that famous son-in-law. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Bardock was one of the Saiya-jin Frieza used as mercenaries to conquer other worlds. Although he was only a "low level" warrior, Bardock grew so powerful that Frieza and his lieutenant Doodoria feared he might become a threat to them. Doodoria brutally murdered the other members of Bardock's squadron; Frieza destroyed the entire Saiya planet--Vegeta, Nappa, and Goku (né Kakarot) were the only survivors. Before he was killed, the fish-like, Tooro cursed Bardock with the ability to see the future, including his own brutal death. But his new psychic powers enable Bardock to establish a mysterious bond with his infant son, who will grow up to defeat the monstrous Frieza. Bardock the Father of Goku uses some of the same characters as the popular "Dragonball Z" TV series, but the continuities don't necessarily match. The one-hour TV special, which first aired in Japan in 1990, has been so heavily edited that it feels fragmented. The viewer is never told who Goku's mother is or why the infant is sent into space in a tiny ship, and the rock soundtrack can't quite marry the scenes that are often jarringly cut together (the uncut version supplies three extra minutes of footage that answers some of these questions). Suitable for ages 8 and up for cartoon violence, the uncut version suitable for teens. --Charles Solomon

Richard Lester's 1975 sequel to his romping Three Musketeers--released the year before--reunites his swashbuckling cast for a decidedly less happy and more somber experience. This time, D'Artagnan (Michael York) and his Musketeer mentors (Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay) have a tougher fight against their old enemies, and the adventure is not without its casualties. But the film is highly entertaining, filled with that same loony air that makes most films by Lester ( How I Won the War, A Hard Day's Night, Help!) so much fun. The actors are with him every step of the way: Reed, Chamberlain, Finlay, and York are a heroic version of the Marx brothers, Raquel Welch was never better, and Charlton Heston clearly enjoys playing the evil Cardinal Richelieu. --Tom Keogh

Northwest of Venice, tucked beneath the Dolomite Mountains, artisan cheesemakers produce Asiago using traditional methods: no computer-operated machinery or temperature-controlled rooms, just cows and grass, men and women, and an abundance of Asiago. A light beige cheese peppered with small holes, Asiago d'Allevo has a slightly fruity appeal and an engaging aroma. Aged for up to five months, it is firm enough to shave or shred. It's often used for cooking and in salads, but also makes a tasty cracker cheese. - Made from unpasteurized cow's milk.

John Grisham's head was full of movies when he wrote The Pelican Brief, which is such a brisk page-turner you could use it to dry your hair. He had Julia Roberts in mind for the heroine, Darby Shaw, a brilliant Tulane law student who comes up with an ingenious theory to explain the baffling assassinations of two Supreme Court justices in one day. They were shot and strangled by ace international terrorist Khamel, who loves the film Three Days of the Condor, but government gumshoes don't get what connects the deaths. Silly government guys! They died so the conservative president, who just wants to be left alone to play golf, will appoint new, conservative justices who will help out a case involving an industrialist who is the enemy of pelicans and other living things. It's all spelled out for them in Darby's brief. She likes to do legal feats to impress her boyfriend, her boyish law prof Thomas (who, like Grisham, prefers to shave at most once a week, and is cool, smart, and antiauthoritarian). The prof likes to paint her toes red, in homage to Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham. (Sarandon also starred in the film version of Grisham's The Client.) But when Thomas gets splattered by a car bomb meant for Darby, she escapes the hospital and hooks up with a Washington Post reporter, Gray Grantham, who sleuths like the guys in All the President's Men. Grisham wishes he hadn't written The Pelican Brief quite so quickly (his first novel, A Time to Kill, went through dozens of drafts), but Pelican's very breathlessness contributes to its dreamy, cinematic chase-o-rama atmosphere.
