Venice was a good place to be in the 17th century if you liked to hang out in church--not that you had much choice in those days. Gabrieli's reputation rests on his "polychoral" compositions: works for several choirs, a choir being any size group of voices or instruments. For example, a sacred composition for three choirs might have two brass groups and one chorus, or two choruses and one brass ensemble. The idea was to keep things flexible to allow for changing local conditions. The result, in any case, was a magnificent "question and answer" style of writing, in which great blocks of harmony challenged each other from opposite sides of San Marco Cathedral. If this sort of thing intrigues you, then you owe it to yourself to hear this terrific collection. It's a cosmic experience. --David Hurwitz |

Pay-per-view events are the bread and butter of pro wrestling. At nearly three hours, they're like monthly Super Bowls and surrounded with the same type of hype and drama. Fully Loaded captures the entire July 2000 event that went down in Dallas, Texas. Part of enjoying pro wrestling is understanding the soap opera that revolves around each match. If you're already a fan, no background is needed. But if you're just getting into pro wrestling, Fully Loaded does a decent job of summarizing the events leading up to all eight matches. There's also plenty of backstage "acting" and shenanigans to get the crowd fired up--like Chris Benoit destroying WWF champion the Rock's wardrobe or Kurt Angle trashing the Undertaker's motorcycle (never touch a man's threads or his ride!). The action inside the ring is as enjoyable, with a triple main event likely to please all WWF fans. The Last Man Standing match between Triple H and Chris Jericho is sufficiently bloody, while the 30-minute championship match between the Rock and Benoit is exhausting to watch. Not much is different here: hardcore fans will love it, while critics will still be shaking their heads in disbelief. --Dave McCoy |

The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Nadia shows in a credible way the highs and lows of celebrity. The gymnastics portions are terrific. Actress-writer-director Ida Lupino got one of her unfortunately rare opportunities behind a camera making this 1966 family comedy about two mischievous students (Hayley Mills, June Harding) making life difficult for the nuns at a girls' convent school. Rosalind Russell has a fine part as a mother superior vexed by their pranks and outwardly chilly until the girls catch her in a more private moment of emotional release. The script has an anecdotal structure--it's sort of one thing after another with Mills's and Harding's troublemakers--but there is a rising sense that these two kids gradually develop some awareness of the pain and sacrifices of others.
